Dear Steve, I hear many Thrash Metal bands using this concept. The conventional Lead solos for which Rock was popular for is getting replaced by Rhythm Melody with Lead embedded with very less EQ changes. I do this also but not as you did exactly. I don't know which song you are playing honestly but the concept is well known. With your help many more people will learn this. Because I have this duel of words on KZbin about the 'Best Solos of 70's, 80s, 90s' but I never come across 'Best Rhythms of 90's' etc which angers me a lot. The drummer and the Rhythm guitarist are taken granted for, captured the least on camera, most focus is on the vocalist and the Lead solo player. I saw a video of band Accept called 'Princess of the Dawn' which uses this concept extensively but video is animated. No band member is shown, please watch it for a pleasure to your idea.

To be honest, there is no rule. Any note which mixes up with the part coming with it is good even if it falls out of the key or scale just like improvisation. Just use your ears and decide. Best wishes from India.
