Nd4 appears to be the solution. Black has 5 ways to take the Knight (failure to take leads to Rd8 (either Rook), mate). 1. pc5xN, pxR(c4)**; 2. pe5xR, pxRe5**; 3. KxN, (either)Rd8**; 4. R(e4)xN, either Rxpe5**, or Ne3**; and finally, 5. R(c4)xN, Nc3**. Not many puzzles present so many different ways to take the sacrifice piece, and yet still reach mate.

I figured out the knight sac was best, but I couldn't figure out what to do if they took with pawn - ofc, wasn't paying proper attention to our own pawn...

Silly-looking 1st move indeed! But it works. Actually, a very delightful puzzle - which at first I thought was fairly lame due to the placement of all white’s major pieces upon unrealistic endgame squares (the 8th rank) …

If you take Ne2 out to board and putt Qa1, now you can play Qd4+ and #2

Right square, wrong piece. Somehow, I thought the pawn was the piece to sacrifice, but that wasn't it. Very cool puzzle!

It's a "dirty" mate because there are two solutions to 1....Kxd4. Both white rooks can mate in d8. It shouldn't happen to a "clean" mate. Sorry.

And the mate threat is a duplicate, ie either R to d8.

​@@eduardoroman2691 The R(either) to d8 doesnt just apply after ... Kxd4. It's a mate threat with the black King still on d5, and it's the solution to lots of other moves. I just wanted to emphasise how "dirty" it is.

You are absolutely right. In chess composition, it is named a "Dual", and it minors the beauty of the problem.

Alternate solution: Note: Black King is completely pinned. White: King to b7 ! Black: any permissible move. White: Rook from c8 to d8, mate…

Kb7?, not Kb7! (might even be an outright blunder) After Rb4+, black saves the other rook by Rxe2

Was also what I thought first, but then I saw black could check the white king by Rb4
