I'm a cop in what these days is a low crime small city. It is amazing how many people get their guns stolen out of vehicles. It is almost a daily occurrence. At least weekly. People leaving guns in cars is - in my opinion - the best way for criminals to get guns. Your vehicle is a conveyance in most instances. It gets you from point A to point B. Then you do your business in point B. The notion that you'll have time to get back to your car under most situations where armed encounters occur is just wishful thinking on the part of most people. Maybe very rural areas are different, but where there is civilization, there are car burglars, a justice system that keeps said burglars on the streets, and just crap-tons of willing victims who carry "car guns". The only useful gun in most instances is the one on you. Your truck gun isn't on you - it's in the car somewhere else, waiting to get stolen. I'm totally a rifle dude. Except my police car, none of my cars ever has a long gun in them unless I'm going to the range, a class, etc.

You should have a significant in vehicle security box. We the people, want you to have a rifle available, as you travel through our community, because of your training. That being said, I'm going to make changes to my security system. Fort Knox is one of, if not the best.

I totally agree. I don't live in a free country so we can't carry guns for our personal protection. On the other hand, we usually don't have stuff stolen from cars but every time I leave the car I have this terrible feeling that something is missing when I return. With that being said: In case something happens I just trust the gear I have on my body. That starts from training and fitness and ends up at gear I can legally carry.

Plus most gun owners advertise with stickers that they love guns and that their vehicle more than likely has one. I used to be like this but now, not one sticker or anything on my vehicles.

Agreed with lock box in vehicle. I carry daily but go to most all sensitive places where carrying is illegal, so I don’t get to carry into the buildings but I will have that firearm at my disposal if I can get out to it, I’ll be going back in to end it

You know why I love these guys? They admit there is no clear answer and don't always agree on everything. If your trainer tells you they know everything and you are wrong if you don't follow them 100%, find other trainers.

True, you see this all the time. Quick example, a self defense trainer in Michigan was telling me that he trained soldiers at Fort Bragg for Combatives, Not knowing that i'm prior Army and trained at multiple fight houses. That was the last time I attended that class. A civilian Training Fort Bragg Soldiers.... Doesn't sound like some shit I would let go down as a prior NCO. Not to mention he wasn't even or have served in the Military period.

I also liked how he brought up having multiple uppers for one lower to keep costs down. You can have a cqb upper as a truck gun and have a reach out and touch someone upper in the bag as well and be ready for just about anything pretty quickly. That's the route I'm taking since keeping food on the table and a roof over my family's head is job one, defense is a very close second. That requires a balance of funds for each. If I ever decide to play the lottery and manage to win I'll I've a gun for every conceivable scenario in every room of the house, vehicle, shed, shop and the small cave. But since I don't pay the stupid tax errrr I mean play the lottery that's just wishful thinking.

PSA sells very well in my store. If they fire out of the box they will be reliable for a long time. The problem is the one where the builder wasn't paying attention... Oops I put in the firing pin retainer before the firing pin.. Yeah that AK didn't work but was a easy fix. The only other difference to higher end firearms is service life.

My truck gun / patrol rifle is a 10.5" RRA LAR15 SBR in 223/556 w/ YHM Turbo suppressor. I also have a Meprolite M21 reflex sight. Even as a police officer I am 100% an advocate for civilian PDW's. Civilians are far more likely to be the first to encounter an active killer in a public setting. I am currently also looking at kitting out a HK SP5K SBR for a backpack PDW.

With you being a sworn officer of the law, I'd like to ask... what are your interpretations of the 2nd regarding non-violent felons? Regarding currently free and post offenders? I ask because as you know, many, I repeat, MANY individuals are out and about, all around us in society everyday, technically felons albeit non-convicted, while others' supposedly "inalienable" rights are suspended or outright revoked. Period. Forever. Just genuinely curious to your position on this issue, and I'll understand(but not necessarily agree with) your "interpretation" of the "law". Myself, I am of the belief that natural rights are just that. Natural. And that God's law incomparably supersedes man's. I appreciate anyone's input on this apparent conundrum and it's hopefully obvious solution. Thanks. 👍✌

Yeah…I guess the only thing those citizens have to hope for is some untrained boy in blue not to kill them. Wouldn’t be the first time someone trying to help got hurt because of untrained police. In many ways, untrained police are far more dangerous than a citizen who has thought about and “knows” what he is doing. Truthfully, more than an active shooter, I’m worried about what happens if I were to react and the cops show up and think I’m the bad guy. Seriously, you have to admit that many if not most of your colleagues lack both the actual training AND the mental fortitude to react in a positive way during a mass shooting. And after the last couple mass shootings, it looks like the cops will probably just sit outside and wait while your kids or family are killed inside and there may even be reports of cops preventing people from trying to act. So, I’m not sure why ANYONE is supposed to care about what some police officer thinks about civilians carrying…nothing against you personally, just saying that’s kinda how it is.

I have always held the opinion that if a person is released from incarceration, having paid his or her debt to society you get all your rights back. The notion that you loose the most efficient way of protecting yourself forever because of a felony does not make any sense. If a persons crime is too egregious then perhaps they should remain in prison.

They just don't have the budget. Civilians who choose to carry a firearm for self defense practice way more with their firearm than what the average patrol officer is required to do. I can guarantee you that their are officers on your local department who only practice with their duty weapon when it come time to qualify. Scary!

I tend to mostly go with the thoughts Paul shared. I live in Dallas so I don't want guns in the vehicle if I'm not in there with them. I also tend to think that most quick reaction situations don't readily allow for a trip to the vehicle to load up, while sometimes it's definitely an option, just not as likely, so I keep everything I might need right now on my person. If I need a lifesaving tool right now, and it's at home or in a bag in the truck on the other side of the mall or a couple blocks off the city square or something, then it might as well be on the moon. Pistols, spare ammo, medical, lighting, etc need to be on my body. Yes, it's heavy and a bit burdensome, but I'm used to it by now. If I have time to run to the truck and retrieve a load out then I'd probably prefer to use that time to read the "battlefield" and figure the best approach to the fight if there's even time for that. Home defense is different because I have everything close at hand at home.

The idea of the truck gun is that its in your car so its there when youre in your car and out and about. Im from Baltimore MD and moved to the middle of nowhere in Texas, although im currently at cooks childrens hospital in ft worth so i get the idea of NOT doing that cuz your car is more likely to get broken in to than you are to get into a gun fight. Currently my truck is sitting in one of the parking garages and im stressin out over the thought that someone might break into my car. Anyway I dont do the truck gun thing either but I do carry my g19 everywhere i go so i guess thats my go to.... Maybe i should do an ar9 build and throw it in a back pack or something

@@James-cr5mc yea, the truck gun idea for me is not a great one, except for specific occasions. I know guys who are all about some truck guns and various bags in their truck etc, who typically will only carry a pistol on them, and maybe a spare mag. I go with two 19s and at least one spare mag on my beltline, along with pretty much everything that people keep in an Ifak for medical in my cargo pockets. It's not super comfortable, it looks like I'm carrying something in my pockets, and I don't really care because keeping up with and carrying bags and packs all the time is not ideal for me. I don't personally mind having spare or more ideal equipment in the vehicle, but everything I may need at a moments notice must be on my person at all times. I just got home from having a son born at Parkland hospital in Dallas, and my girlfriend's sister saw someone going around checking door handles in the parking garage there, and the next night on the scanner I heard DPD had arrested 5 people in a parking garage (not the one where we were) breaking into cars. There was a time a couple years ago when things were a little more hot that I would have a shotgun in whatever vehicle with me, but I didn't like leaving the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and as soon as things calmed down I stopped bringing it. There's a lot of thought process about the topic that comes from military or LE perspectives, but that's not the context most of us are living our daily lives in. There's no radio for help, there's no backup, we're not arriving on an active scene etc.. if the typical day to day dude is involved then it's because it's going down pretty much right here and right now. Instances like Willeford and that church shooter are different because he was at home nearby, but for the most part we're gonna have whatever we have and any attempts to retrieve something from a vehicle will be either a waste of time or better suited for after the immediate danger is over, such as getting medical for victims after a shooter/shooters are inactive. That's what I see play out most of the time from accounts of these situations.

My respect for Paul just jumped up several notches when he mentioned his concern that a rifle left in his truck could end up in the hands of a bad guy. When I was a cop, it was astonishing how many guns were stolen from vehicles. I firmly believe hthat unless one takes additional security precautions, it is simply a matter of when, not if, you are going to arm a criminal. This is several orders of magnitude more likely than needing a long gun to engage an active shooter as a private citizen. I do keep a service grade handgun with a corrosion resistant finish aong with spare magazines in a lock box, locked inside my vehicle to augment my CCW pistol. As a retired cop with Active Shooter training, I can say John is correct in his concern that responding officers are likely going to perceive a man with a rifle as the shooter and not a good guy, while handguns can be temporarily concealed on the arrival of police until you can ID yourself to first responders.

A lot of good points here, fellas. I live in the country, and drive long distances in rural TX a lot. I do not keep a rifle in the truck, though I usually take one along when I’m on the road, securely stowed. I am far more serious about my trauma bag, which I have used on the roadside a couple of times, whereas I’ve never needed my rifle for an emergency. But these are weird times, so it makes sense to be prepared.

Totally agree that the odds of having my car broken into are far greater than the odds of me needing a rifle while I'm out and about. If you're going to keep a truck gun, your first priority must be securing it against theft. With that said, since it's going to take a little time to access the gun anyway, I'd lean towards a versatile setup with some magnification that can be useful at longer ranges, as opposed to a setup that prioritizes CQB distances.

The gentleman in the middle is, in my humble opinion, the wisest of the three. One is more likely to get the “truck gun” stolen than one is likely to need a rifle to deal with a threat. I have carried a concealed firearm for 40 years (I’m 70) and have never had to use it to deal with a threat. There are, by far, more vehicle break-ins than there are scenarios where a rifle would be needed. There is simply no need to further arm the bad guys by providing them with an AR-15 to steal.

Best choice, or AT LEAST something equivalent to sonic ear valve type plugs... I carry some in a tiny little metal capsule on my keychain. Never know... you MIGHT have the ten seconds it takes to put them in, if you're trapped in the back of a store as a shooter makes his way in from the front, for example.

One better i wear and keep around my neck Bluetooth Beats flex and Beats Studio pro noise canceling ear buds in my pocket. I listen to music, news and KZbin 100% of the time when I work so, I always have hearing protection. Step,futher voice activate an emergency number so you can detail the situation while keeping both hands on your rig ,while eyes are down range or on a swivel assessing then situation. Ears on and Comm's up!

All great points. One thing I’d like to add, when considering a quick reaction platform, is location. Where are you when you think you’ll need a quick reaction firearm? All have said where you plan to encounter a quick response. I think it’s a point of serious consideration, especially for first time firearm owners.

For a truck gun, people might be interested in the PSA JAKL (.300BLK or 5,56) - Folding Brace stock - Piston operated - Adjustable Gas System 3 big features that lend themselves well to both a truck gun, and using a silencer too :)

👍👍 Spent probably half of our 2007 deployment to Diyala, as QRF and route clearance. Very similar to what we preferred. Optic and light were always attached. My personal preference; "less is better", all I want are some tritium tipped irons. 😁

I live in a place where if you get pulled with an AR platform in your vehicle you're gonna be in for tons of hassle. So the "Contingency" load out is a 1866 Winchester in .45 colt, a Schofield in same, and a Springfield Trapdoor in 45-70 for distance (with custom loads). Ready made "Reenactor" explanation, but with enough firepower to at least disrupt an active shooter's flow, so to speak. Get in their OODA loop, especially the trapdoor. I know that sounds crazy, but it's what I have to deal with.

So, if you’re like me and decided that you don’t want to open your home to the ATF or you can’t (don’t want to) afford a suppressor, a linear compensator is a good option. It helps tame the muzzle blast of shorter barrels and directs the blast down range. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a solution.

Is the TQ to a buttstock smart though? (honest question) I've always been told you don't want to have to use a dirty TQ to stop bleeding cause it could make things worse (i.e. infections and what have you)

@@Delta_Seven if you are placing a tourniquet properly on the appendage then I would say it would have to be extremely dirty to make enough of a difference to cause an infection vs everything else that may get in the wound during the traumatic event including a dirty bullet literally going through you. I'd say if it garuntees you have a tq on you when you pick up a rifle every single time it's much more likely to save a life then kill you. Just my 2 cents.

@@Delta_Seven A TQ on a stock is not a good idea because it interferes with your left hand cheek weld. As Josh said, the cleanliness doesn't matter. For one, a tq is applied above the wound, not over it (I saw a lot of antifa guys trying to put TQ in crazy areas after they f-ed around and found out). Also the wound is already hella infected the second you get punctured anyways. There is tons of bacteria in the air as well. Infection is no priority though, as the latter care will involve cleaning up the wound by irrigating it before sealing it up permanently. I don't put a TQ on my gun because I carry an ankle blowout kit on my person always (since 2010). In home defense if I need to get up from bed, I strap the blowout kit to my arm so it is with me at all times.

My quick reaction truck gun I went with a Ruger PC charger, since most of my time is spent driving a company truck I have to be able to fit everything in a nonsuspicious looking backpack. Since I live in a rural area in Alaska even though I work in a city, my main concern is large animals. 9 ft tall brown bears have been observed within 4 miles of my house more than once since May, so both my wife and I keep 45-70 gov rifles as our home defense quick reaction guns. If God forbid we get a human predator on the property, I'm confident that a 430 grain hard cast lead round moving 2,000 feet per second will have the desired effect.

I actually bought a pc charger for a similar idea, essentially when going somewhere for an extended duration IE family trip PC charger, in a backpack so its out of sight. and I found that you can pretty easily shoot it without any kind of buttstock or brace if you cheekweld the smooth area right behind the rail and put a sig romeo 5 or other high bore axis red dot on it and shoot it like the cheek pistol concept that demonstrated concepts does.

I recently started using a MCK Roni as my truck\Home defense "rifle". It allows me to quickly up grade my EDC platform to something more like a PCC. I have the benefits of familiarity and confidence of my EDC and since its not a firearm, if it taken from my vehicle the bad guy only gets a kit but not a weapon.

I have found that any night reaction kit should include hearing protection/sound enhancement capability muffs. They sit on top or inside on top of a mag bag wit attached blowout with tourniquets. Separate flashlight clipped to outside. Semper Fi

Don’t really do a “truck gun” but rather an EDC backpack gun: AP5-P (MP5-k clone) with a Tri-lug mounted SiCo Omega 9k just baaaarely fits into a Swiss Gear backpack. Fairly discreet, don’t get a lot of attention 👌🏼 Previously ran a 7.5” 300 blackout with law tactical folder, which is probably actually a better option (ballistically speaking) but the MP5-k just has so much sex appeal. 🤷🏻‍♂️ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I’m just an old c’boy from the past. If ya ain’t got it on ya, you just ain’t got it. I put my old 1911 out to pasture a few years back and now pack a ParaOrd Warthog .45 with double stack mag and a spare in my hip pocket. That gives me 21 lil sledgehammers to do what I hope never to do. “Head shots, boy, you don’t waste meat or ammo” was how I grew up and I got a whipping if I missed even once. I pack an elastic strap tourniquet of my own design in the same pocket as my spare mag. I figure if I punch a hole, I’d best try to stop the leak. You never know, I might just try to wing ‘em, and the hydraulic effect from that .45 is gonna make their ears ring and they are sure to leak. I learned my lesson in Tucson back in the ‘60s by leaving a good Parker side by side and a carbine in my truck unattended. Don’t do that!

Really appreciate the wide variety of options presented. I use a number of different tools for different jobs. Most of my training is done with a 10.5" 5.56 upper because its light, accurate enough, easy to maneuver around corners, still gives me good velocity with 62gr soft points, and cheap to shoot (especially with a rimfire conversion). BUT, I also run a 24" Grendel for hunting food, 22" flat top 5.56 for prairie dogs and plinking at distance, and some 300 BO uppers for a variety of uses around both the house and the farm. Different tools for different jobs. If I had to make do with just one, I would have to which job(s) I was willing to no longer due because it isn't possible fore one tool to do all the jobs. I could get by with a 10.5" 5.56 for most uses and the long heavy Grendel for hunting and everything beyond 100 yds, but a shorter/lighter 10.5" blackout sure makes a good backup for the Grendel. Especially if I have to go track somebody's wounded deer through heavy brush.

I'm guessing my home defense rifle decision isn't going to be the best for everyone, but I'm happy with it. It's an old Winchester 94 in 30-30 Win. It's loaded with 150 soft point ammo. There are 9 extra rounds in a rifle stock shell holder. No optics, just a Williams receiver sight I've hunted with for 30 years now. It's a good brush gun for deer and works for me in the town I live, even if a black bear decided to try to come in the house some night.

My quick reactionary gun is my pistol. I too have concerns about leaving any firearms in an unoccupied vehicle. I do keep an appropriate rifle at the ready for home defense. Use a quality pistol, equip it with good sights and practice at long range in a realistic fashion. You may be surprised how capable that type of system can be.

I bought a used palmetto State lower, bravo company manufacturing upper ar-15. It is definitely my most accurate firearm. I'd strongly recommend bravo company manufacturing ar-15 rifles to anyone considering a firearm purchase. Also to those people, I'd say your carry gun is probably the most important gun you own during peacetime. Edit: on second thought your ability to own and possess the best weapon possible, an AR-15, is what keeps the peace in the first place.

Know this going in, because you may end up needing to tune your gas system or at worst replace a barrel. Otherwise their products are top tier.

All good points to consider. I don't have a truck gun- because those get stolen. I have a backpack gun that I have for special occasions. I always have a handgun with extra mags and a light. Know your bullets and what you want or need them to do. It took considerable time to identify and acquire the proper rounds for my backpack gun due to the short barrel. Remember that many (most) of the rounds manufactured and tested are put through long barrels so they can put the best looking numbers on the side of the box. Lastly, no matter what you carry, you must practice deploying it from the point which you carry it.

Buying a rifle, and putting a short barrel on it will make you suspect 1 to the boot-lickers. That’s what I did. I bought a 16” LWRCi M6IC DI complete and a BCM 16” 300 blackout complete upper to place on my LWRCi lower. Then I went and made a dedicated PSA Turkey Day lower w/Elfmann single stage trigger for my BO. Then a WMD Nickel Boron coated builder set. Next bought an Aero lightweight 14.5” P&W upper, which now lives on my PSA upper. Current plans are to build up my San Tan lightweight set (upper & lower ordered in 2019 just got Aug ‘23) with the barrel and handguard from my Aero upper and make the Aero an 18” longer range set up. My first plan with the San Tan was to make a 6 ARC but the ammo is still very expensive here in Honolulu so now I’m chasing a lightweight rifle. Down the 🐇 🕳 I went

I live in a rural community, but travel considerably in and out of suburban and urban areas. My “get home” setup consists of 7.5” AR pistol with folding stock adapter, light, and red dot optic (currently Romeo MSR). This fits perfectly in a lockTote cut- and puncture- resistant backpack that is secured in my vehicle. I have 2 thirty round Hexmags filled with, quite honestly, whatever I could find, inside the bag. I always carry at least 29 rounds of 9mm as part of my EDC, so my plan is, if necessary, use my 9 to fight to my bag, disconnect quickly, then cover. Alternately, I always have a little more reach available should I encounter an active homicidal nutbag situation. Still a work in progress; when I started putting this load out together, 300 blackout was nigh impossible to find…

For now i decided to keep my setup in a .22 caliber. It fits my budget for now, the ammo is cheap as chips and my rifle and pistol can share that ammo. It's not my long term solution, but I thought if things went down tomorrow, this was the biggest bang i could get for my buck. I do have pistols in 9mm and .40 too, just not a ton of ammo for them. Definitely a few magazines of some up close stopping power if neceesary

Diamond Back HD tonneau cover on my truck does a great job of securing my rifle in the bed toolbox. I won't leave one there in a big city (Phoenix for instance) but down here on southern AZ, I'm comfortable around town. For my truck gun, I've also started to use a Marlin 336Y with a Ranger Point Precision forestock on it cerakoted orange/matte silver to match the sling. Sports a Holosun red dot. A lot less likely to get the attention an "evil black rifle" gets.

You may want to add a disclaimer in videos such as this that one needs to check on their local and state laws on carrying weapons in public and in cars/trucks. There is a lot of content out there about “truck guns”. There are obviously jurisdictions out there, besides CA, were you can’t carry loaded or concealed weapons in a vehicle. We don’t all live in Texas, Tennessee, or Arizona.

Sadly, the facts are that state, county, and municipal laws in some jurisdictions across America make carrying in certain situations illegal and people can be arrested, jailed, and convicted. CA is one example. The truck guns they are specifically talking about are illegal to possess in CA, with an additional charge if you’re carrying it loaded in a car.

I have cowboyed a bit in my day. Lots of alone time. Lots of time to think. You start to see things, big things that you can't see when you constantly look through the microscope of the moment. Never had much use for politicians, still don’t. Always thought they were a pack of lying skunks, still do. Always had the good fortune to work and ride with decent and honest men and women. Now days, when I look out my window, I see my Country on Her knees. She has become gravely ill and I fear losing Her. Never thought this could happen. Guess I have to say now that this is part my fault. Never voted much and when I did, never looked real close. I figured other people smarter than me would make the right choice and then keep a close eye on things to make sure it was done right. Can’t say their choice was wrong, but like me, they didn’t keep a close eye. I started to take a closer look after that terrible day in September when the Towers fell. I hated what I saw and began to look back so I could see ahead. Seems to me after President Kennedy was killed, things started getting bad. I can’t fault any one man for where We find Ourselves today. Guess it is more of all Our fault for trusting men and women who We gave power to and then looking away. These few men and women are now consumed with an unbridled lust for money, power, control and fame. Not sure if any of them really work for the People anymore. What I see now is America heading for a hard, hard fall if things don’t get turned around. By now, this should be fairly obvious to anyone paying the least bit of attention. There may be no way to stop the storm which comes Our way and We all should prepare as best We can. Until common men and women of good character are elected from the lowest to the highest positions, things cannot improve, they can only get worse. We now find Ourselves in an election cycle. I would encourage all Americans to educate themselves on their upcoming choices and view with a critical eye the choices already made. What's to get beyond that? You already have it all.

Was my mindset choosing the two, but a Can, .300 upper, armor, packs. Work my way into better quality and added kit variability etc. I’m fine for the frequency of training I get, but I’m talking about all the “what ifs”.

I still carry my g19 and have a psa 10.5 with over 5k rounds through it

@@rossinverted I’d get a 16-18” 556 upper before a 300 so you can effectively use range ammo in a shtf situation. I’m assuming you use specialty ammo in your 10.5” like myself. Definitely worth getting a can even with a 556 rifle.
