Thanks, I use "Arca Swiss" plates for the "top" and the "ifootage sea stars" for switching heads between my mono and tripods. I am really impressed by the "sea star" system, super easy and beautifully designed and engineered. They are a bit overkill for my photography setup but as with all of the ifootage gear it feels like it will last for a lifetime.

I thought I had all the QR plates I needed, until I saw you use one UNDER the video head. Why didn't I think of that? I guess I need a couple more. I like the Manfrotto 323/200pl QR system...the one designed for regular photography. They are smaller than the video QR systems (access to the batttery) and very reliably 'click in' and release easily. I also use the QR plates for my separate audio recorder, cell phone camera and other accessories. Thanks for the video.

I have all Manfrotto RC2 quick releases and they work great for what I have. I like that I don't have to screw anything down to secure them since it's all spring clips. I do give the lever a little push just to make sure it locks though. I did learn not to buy the generic clone plates since they don't actually fit the Manfrotto base. 🙂

I never ever thought of detaching the video head from the tripod and instead having it attach via Quick Release Plate....I can see the advantage that you don't have to buy a another separate video head for your slider or monopod...I do wonder if the head is as stable as when it is mounted in the more traditional way but it seems to work for you and fresh ideas are always interesting!

Great video. Your outtakes are great. My last video, I forgot to turn the overhead room light off. My whole light setup is at 5400k, and here I've got this cheap yellow LED fixture ON. Also, a big thanks to you for your channel. I've learned so much. I've got a nearly perfect green screen going on, but I've still got to get my camera settings correct and my light brightness figured. So many variables. I'm so happy that I have one framed shot that I need to get perfect. Once I get it there, I'm hoping that I won't have to constantly mess with the variables. My problem with my Canon M-50 is that I cannot transfer a video file that is larger than 4GB through the USB cable. Any file larger than 4GB shows up on my SD card as 0kb when I've looking at the SD card from the PC. When I take the card out and put it in my PC, the PC sees the file correctly. So I end up having to take my camera off the quick release plate anyway to open the bottom door and access the SD card. I've got to find the best quick release plate that will allow me to open the door without changing the camera's position. To me, you are far from a Basic Filmmaker, you're the master. I'm still just the grasshopper. I'll snatch that pebble eventually. I know you're old enough to know what the hell I'm talking about. :D

The 4gb file thing is actually a limitation of the MTP protocol used to transfer files from most digital devices (cameras, Android phones etc) over USB. Nothing you can do about it, except use a card reader.

I haven't tried the ARCA system but I don't see why you would prefer that one. I mean, all the advantage it has is that is quicker to take off and on (although it seems not that much) and that advantage seems to be it's Achilles heel as well, since the Manfrotto system, as you put your device "on lateral rails" so to speak, has some extra positive holding capacity that the ARCA doesn't. But most definitely, I'd prefer Manfrotto's "fixing" mechanism, just half a turn of a knob instead of having to tie/loose the knob by hand a few turns, which can be a bit more complicated once you have your camera mounted there I guess. By the way, I have this ultra-cheap tripod (about 18€ a few years ago, some 20$ or so in Imperial units) and it has its own quick release plate (Hama is the brand now that I remember) which just does the work, though it has some give to it, I mean, the camera is going nowhere, but it has some tiny little amount of play if you try and move it. But even so, it has the same kind of twisting handle as the ARCA you show in the video, which makes me wonder how come Manfrotto does not use it as well. Sorry, no bad joke today, you're publishing more frequently now, or so it seems to me, and I just can't keep up with my low standards for sense of humour.
@BasicFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
For me, I prefer the ARCA for these small DSLRs with the stupid freakin bottom door access. Other I like the feel and function of the Manfrottos.
@fadetounforgiven5 жыл бұрын
Well, if that's the case, then you're right for those kind of DSLRs, but that's the same problem with those grips (or whatever the name) with extra-batteries, isn't it? That's something not well thought at all, that's for sure.
@BasicFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
I get the thinking, BUT, a camera designer who mounts a camera on a tripod, and can't get to the battery or SD card without have to then unmount the camera from the tripod, well, I don't know.

I’d like to think that some of my previous comments may have contributed to the making of this vid 🤔 If you are willing to do a little modification, the smaller Benro heads can be made to except AS plates. Also the small Benro plates fit most AS clamps. More uses for QRs: I have a field mixer with a plate on the bottom and a clamp on top, My TelePrompTer is set up this way too. As well as my shoulder rig. My steady cam has a clamp on top of the cheese plate, and I even have one on top of the dash in my truck. Next let’s look at the many uses of the Hot/cold shoe mounts 😜 Love your vids BFM

That's something everyone needs. I'd prefere Arca too but unfortunately I have some heads that have fixed Manfrotto mount. I prefer keeping the weight down and I don't like to mount qr on a qr. I'd never buy an item that is neither of those standards and preferably Arca if I have a choice. Sometimes size can be an issue too and manfrotto plate is pretty large.

Hate to say it, but I really cannot see the point of quick release plates it you are using a single camera with a single tripod, which I usually am. First you remove the quick release plate from the tripod, then you attach the quick release plate to the camera, then you put the camera onto the tripod, and finally tighten up the clamp to ensure it is firmly attached. Without the quick release plate you simply put the camera on the tripod, then tighten up the screw to make sure it is firmly attached. This is two operations instead of four. I can sort of see the point if you are constantly swapping cameras out, and it helps if it is easy to tighten the screw that attaches the tripod to the camera, but the sort of thumbwheel arrangement you get on the Manfrotto Pixi tripods works very well. Plus you save a bit of weight, and there is no quick release plate to lose or leave at home.
@BasicFilmmaker3 жыл бұрын
Cool. I think you miss the point. Once the camera plate is mounted to your camera, it stays there. Once the tripod plate is mounted to your tripod it stays there. Need to replace a battery or go hand-held, unlock and slide. Back to tripod? Slide and lock. There's no screwing on and unscrewing off. When you get another anything (job, crane, another tripod, desk mount, gimbal, slider, etc.) you just add another plate to those, unlock and slide off the camera, slide on and lock. Makes sense?
@richardellingworth44843 жыл бұрын
@@BasicFilmmaker Yes it makes sense, but only if you are prepared to permanently attach a QR plate to all your cameras. I just find that if I do that, I tend to go out with my tripod, and another camera, and then discover I left my QR plate at home, still attached to the other camera. Best to keep the QR plate attached to the tripod so it doesn't get lost. I also have a couple of Fuji cameras, and if you attach a QR plate it tends to obstruct the battery door. I switch batteries far more often than I attach to a tripod, so it becomes a bit of a pain. I can absolutely see the point of QR plates when you have lots of equipment that needs to be swapped out in a hurry, but if I'm out and about with a camera, a lightweight tripod, and maybe a microphone, then the QR plate is just one more thing I have to deal with that adds weight to the whole setup. That said, all the tripods I have (except the Manfrotto Pixis, and the odd monopod) use QR plates of some sort. Wish Manfrotto would use Arca Swiss plates.

BTW, thanks to your video I discovered the iFootage Cobra monopod and it's been a great addition to my ifootage tripod! Quick question if you don't mind: I'm trying to find an L-bracket to vertically mount my Nikon D500 (preferably with a vertical grip on for extended battery life) on my tripod (iFootage Gazelle) with the Komodo K5 head but the K5 doesn't have an Arca-Swiss capture plate (iFootage uses its own capture plate) and most the good quality L-brackets (i.e. three legged thing, etc.; I need to mount heavy super telephoto lenses of up to 700mm so I need a sturdy L-bracket) require an Arca-Swiss mount. Do you know which adapter I could use to mount an Arca-Swiss-enabled (or some other style not necessarily Arca-Swiss enabled) L-bracket to my existing Komodo K5 head? Thanks!

@@BasicFilmmaker I only had one QR plate... Another this is .. as the head is quite stiff.. To balance the Camera on the K5 QR plate (rail) and head ( this is how I balance my RC Helicopter blades). Lock the K5 head in the horizontal position. Mount the camera onto the K5 QR rail. loosen the panning screw. Place the tripod, (collapsed) onto the table.. ((* Head etc over hanging the table edge) Move the K5 rail until the whole rig is balanced horizontally. - The panning base will allow the head to pivot freely. Once "Centred" Lock the K5 QR rail. Now the rig should hold its position whatever angle it is placed, without creeping up or down... That done. Lock the panning screw. Stand tripod on the floor and test. PS If the rig cannot be balanced without the rail almost as at the end of its travel - You will have to unmount the camera from the additional QR plate - in my case the Sunfoto, and move this plate further along the K5 QR rail and try again.
