It is a "pace stick", it splits down the middle to form a triangle and is used by drill instructors to measure certain lengths of pace when marching, thirty inch, 27 inch etc... The smaller one carried by the lance corporal is a swagger stick used to prevent other ranks from putting their hands in their pockets as their hands would be busy holding said stick. Lance corporal has a swagger stick, sergeant who is the higher rank carries a pace stick.

Ladybird Book of Old People “extract”: Grandad has a new “power job” - following a weeks training course at our expense, he gets to press a little blue button to weigh vehicles, and then he gets to write down on a little piece of paper (with his own pencil) if they’re too heavy. He’s then allowed to post those off somewhere. He’s really exited about it, he gets a Yellow Jacket and an ID badge and everything. He’s so cool. Grandad can also shout at law abiding members of the public, he can make up Laws, tell people what to do - even if what they’re doing is 100% legal. He’s really cool. This 2 day a week job gets him out of the care home, (provided his medication is increased and he’s supervised). A little white van takes him to and from the weighing machine. Some days he’s allowed to sit in the front of the van next to the driver, which is very exciting for Grandad. Grandad lives for his power job. Grandad loves shouting orders at people. Grandad loves his little job. Grandad is very happy. He dreams of being a PCSO or Traffic Warden one day …

In my day they where known as (RP) regimental police, who ended up doing that job because they had no trade or very little education, all they could do was shout and ball, the army didn't waste its time putting educated tradesman at the guard room. Dont get me wrong it was a cushy number, away from regimental bullshit, the SGT made his own BS, or prisoners in the guardroom did the work. While we are on the subject of jobsworth, the DVSA guy needs to learn some common courtesy when addressing members of the public, and needs to brush up on his trespassing laws.

Yeah he's really mastered the art of being rude though he likes talk over others and then call them rude. I would expect to see those manners with a child. I don't know if his parents are to blame for not raising him to act the way a mature adult should. Maybe it's a cultural thing or simply the result of a bad upbringing in which case I feel very sorry for AB and hope things can only get better for him.

Others have mentioned what the pacing stick is meant to be used for but in practice it's used as a prop during parade drills to GREAT comedic effect such as being threatened to have it run through your skull and ridden around the square as a donkey by the Sgt.

@@jamescullen2448 That's actually quite rare now. They're normally used as pawns in some God forsaken shit hole to satisfy some obscure political or economic agenda. I was in the Australian Army Reserve during the Vietnam war and was subject to the national service "ballot' that picked people based on their particular birth date. I had already volunteered for the Reserve but my number didn't come up for service overseas. Either way it was a corrupt misuse of military personnel which killed 500 Australian troops for nothing. In this case they obviously consider a citizen with a camera their enemy.

He is a Drill SGT, couldn't see if he had a pip above his strips (Staff SGT), normally carried by W01 or W02 or RSM (Warrant Officer 1, 2, Regimental Sargent Major) and that drill stick opens up at one end like a compass, one full marching step (like the one you used in school to draw a circle), and it can be used for measuring the correct spacing of soldiers while on parade, but is rarely used for this as soldiers are trained to space themselves correctly, it could also be used to measure out an area to see if the Battalion, Company or Regiment will fit into that space without the soldiers being there. Might be wrong but sounds good. Big Baza OUT, lol. Great content AB, enjoyed watching
