The TikToker, whose username is Johnny America, proudly recounted that he abruptly left the duo behind when they started ordering “surf and turf” and a handful of drinks at a local hibachi restaurant.

I had the same thing happen to me a long time ago, so this strategy has been used for a while. I was already at the restaurant and sitting down. My date was supposed to meet me there, so when she showed up with a friend, it was kind of too late to just get up and leave. They both complimented me all night telling me how nice I was, so I was onto them quickly. I left during desert. I actually did go to the bathroom, but headed out the door after. I never regretted that.

About 40 yrs ago while in college I met who would be my future wife at church. She was sitting directly behind me. I had seen her before and thought she was cute. I asked her to go with me to brunch. She said yes. But then a few moments later said her roommate drove her in and was waiting outside. So I said I’d buy her brunch too. We go to brunch and they proceeded to sit at a big circular table that had 4 other girls they knew. The whole table was full of smiles and giggles. It’s just an entirely different situation. For me it would still depend on the person. I could pay for everyone for one meal, big deal. It would all hinge on how it went. Could be everything from quality girl that has friends that worry about her to we’re all hanging out all night. Could also just be a straight up hunger scam. It’s not necessarily the situation that’s messed up, but how it played out once you figure out the motives.

To add a little nuance to the comments... In certain cultures women will invite friends on a date and it's not malevolent. A lot of Colombian women did it with me over the years, and they just wanted to get their friend's approval. They weren't trying to take advantage. I'm sure it's like that in other cultures too But yeah the guy was most likely right in this case
