I do something similar while painting watercolours in my studio. Put a mirror set at the angle you usually paint - if you can see a light reflected in the mirror you will get glare in the wet watercolour from that light. Move that light or change your position.

Would this quick tip take the place of a painting umbrella?

Not necessarily. The umbrella blocks the brightness of light so that we can more accurately gauge the values of our colors. Glare might still be a problem under an umbrella.
