I use food grade mineral oil on the fretboards. You can get a big bottle at the big box hardware stores for less than $10. No possibility of going rancid like lemon oil, and a lot cheaper. (Hack, I'll email you about the guitar I spoke of. It's definitely a project, but I think you can accomplish it).

Thanks! By the way, lemon oil is actually scented mineral oil. I’ve had my same bottle for 15 or more years now, and no spoilage.

Looking forward to seeing the leveling and crowning too. I did one this weekend on my squier stratacoustic I got for really cheap on offer up. Turned out amazing but I had to remove a lot of material to get down to the deepest divits

The Wayne’s World Squier neck I re-fretted in the “What am I going to do with this project” videos was a pretty good example of level and crown.

I recently stumbled across plastic razor blades on Amazon, but haven’t had a chance to check them out yet. Next time I have a guitar I need to clean grime off I want to try them out to see how well they work. It’s a very cool idea a luthier channel mentioned a while back

Never heard of them but will check them out!

Man, that gunk reminds me of when I did IT support for friends, one was a mother of a friend who was a heavy smoker, and the inside of the computer was just nasty

lol… I am also in IT and can relate. :)

I went all maple years ago for this teason, too much work lol. Great clip 👍

I was thinking about how much easier maple would have been as I was doing it. :)

It's no work at all if you give your fretboard a quick wipe with mineral oil every time you change your strings. The trick is not to let it get to the point where it needs scraping.

100% agree.

When I come across necks like this, it sometimes makes me want to go home and do some preventative maintenance on my own guitars.
@hacksguitarhobby3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I took a look at several of mine after seeing it. I often sell these necks on EBay and wonder if the new owners have any idea how much work goes into some of them.

I've heard conflicting opinions on lemon oil.. to the point that some fretboard cleaners advertise 'no lemon oil' in their oil. Why do some say it's bad?
@ltgray27803 ай бұрын
Being an organic oil, it could become rancid over time. (Read my comment for more info).

Not sure. Seems to have been a standard forever, and I’ve not had any issues in decades.

Blame companies, like Dunlop, for misleading people by naming their product "Lemon Oil" when in reality it's just scented mineral oil, and not actual essential oil from lemon trees. Actual lemon oil should never be used on wood. Being hydrophobic and volatile, it will push water out of the wood and dry it out even further. Buy refined mineral oil (aka liquid paraffin or liquid petroleum) from a pharmacy. It's $5-10/liter, much cheaper than the "Lemon Oil" products.

@@hacksguitarhobby yea, I don't know. I think Martin says Do not use lemon oil on our guitars.

Right, mine is mineral oil and non organic.

why is everything guitar backwards? down the neck is called up, satin is considered slicker than gloss, and why won't anyone explain what product cleans a finished maple neck? and i guarantee if you scotchbright a guitar it will scratch it.
@hacksguitarhobbyАй бұрын
You can clean finished maple with a damp cloth. If unfinished, use Naptha. Naptha is pretty safe either way, actually.

@hacksguitarhobby , thanks, after months of asking you're the only one to reply. I found some stats on the fender site about my model strat: Body basswood, Body Finish gloss polyester, Neck & Fingerboard maple, Neck & Fingerboard Finish gloss urethane. So just a warm cloth? I don't see any cracks or damage, i want to clean it because it's used instrument and don't know who or what has been touching it with their cooties.
