Quick Tip 400 - The Halo Effect

During the recent in-person workshop one of the participants raised the question about the halo effect. Artist/art teacher Dianne Mize decided that it would make a good Quick Tip.

When you tell us that you're going to point something out that you see too often that makes you cringe, I get a sinking feeling because I just know that a couple of minutes later I'll be saying to myself, "Yep... I've done that!"... Thanks for pointing it out so we're conscious of it, and following up with a tip on how we can avoid it! And, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! - 400 Quick Tips... such an accomplishment... . Did you ever think when you finished the first quick tip that you'd reach a milestone number like this? I love your tips Dianne! I'm currently using Acrylics and Watercolours but have just started buying oils to make a start and I will be going back over all of your hints and tips. Can I ask how you store your palette that is showing in your demonstration? I probably won't keep that much out on a palette but am fascinated to see how it is preserved.

Good tip on essentially crosshatching the sky. I'll have to remember that! I paint with acrylics, so maybe this is different. I'd put in the sky first, then block in the cow's shape on top of the sky. Using layers on top of each other, rather than cutouts of elements side-by-side. I find myself mentally rehearsing the order of the painting process before I start, which minimizes having to paint around things. No halos! The only downside to my method is if I mess up the foreground element and have to redo it. Trying to patch a hole in a lovely gradated sky can be something of a nightmare. 😮

Hi Diane, I’ve noticed this effect with many great artists, eg Van Gogh, Cezanne. Rather than detract it seems to enhance. Am I missing something? I’m very much a novice and may have missed your point here. Thank you for your time.

I love this effect. I intentionally add them red shifts, bloom, blur etc. I also wonder why she and farges cringe to it. Im only guessing because of their need to conform to their group.

I'm not going to argue about personal tastes. If the halo effect around an image enhances the strength of the painting, that's one thing, but when it interferes with the spatial composition, it can appear more like either a gimmick or a technical flaw.

My first art paint did still life apples. Teacher loved the "echo" of the red in my blue background but it drove me nuts. Is that similar or different from what you are trying to explain?

If the halo effect was brushstrokes showing in the background following the outside shape of the images, yes.

I have no fears about losing form slightly if it means avoiding this AWFUL trait. If a glass in a still-life is slightly lopsided, then so be it. It won't bother me anywhere near as much as a halo will (lost edges generally offer me plenty of leeway anyway.) In general though, I'll scrub in background colour near the outside shape with a no.1 or no.2 hog filbert. Small enough to reach cramped spots, though bristly enough to maintain abstraction . I actually know of one or two professional artists who are terrible for committing the halo effect. I think one does it to be 'contemporary' and to exaggerate the feeling of rhythm, but I'm not convinced.
