I just started painting about 6-8 months ago and this particular lesson was really helpful. You have taught me more about color theory than anyone else on KZbin. You have ideal 'teacher' disposition of calm and encouragement backed with a wealth of knowledge. Sorry I cannot afford to be a paying patron you are a gem.

Very helpful techniques here, I love your organized value lined palette…….thinking of how mine looks (chaos), I can see where I run into so many problems, such as forgetting which pile has the color I was using! Thanks Dianne 🙂

Hi, Dianne. I don't have a John Pike palette; but, I do have a large horizontal plasic one with 4 rows of wells one on top another. Would it be feasible to fill 3 to 5 wells of the appropriate tonal strenghts for each value line or value-color line, and proceed in the same way as in this QT? It this is not practicable -- how to do a plein air watercolor painting of a summer sky? Just by instinct, as I have done until now? Thanks so much for an intriguing lesson. Carol.

Carol, in watercolor, it is better to control the value with the amount of water while painting. Paint out of the tube can become any value, depending from it's inherent value to the lightest light, depending upon how much water is in it. It's best to set up any palette according to the color wheel rather than according to value.

I don't seem to be able to find your video lesson Cracking The Color Code on your website, and I'd love to see it. Could you tell us how exactly to find that lesson? Thank you!

That's a great explanation. I noticed it's not exactly how Bob Ross would have done this.

Nope! Bob Ross is always by formula. I don't believe in formulas for painting.

I notice that you've been repeating that in the comments section of this nice lady's helpful tutorials. Kindly stop that, and maybe go watch Bob Ross videos if you only wish to study his methods, eh?
