So glad you mentioned the gas plug for the M1. It'll take you a little bit to get it dialed in, but once it is you're gold. You basically start with the plug venting just about all the gas and close it a little bit after each string. When the rifle stops short-stroking and starts cycling reliably, you've arrived.

Similarly, even with relatively modern firearms, I suggest care be exercised with +P and +P+ loads. For example, .45 ACP ammunition is - by its original design - a comparatively low pressure round. Some modern 1911A1’s (such as Remington’s R1 series) are not designed to handle the . 45 ACP +P’s additional pressure.

Recently did some work on a Remington model 12 .22 rim fire. After some research I found that the extractor was modified by the manufacturer due to excessive pressure (drilled a couple of holes). Most .22 ammo was subsonic in those days, so it is recommended that subsonic be used in them. I did notice an issue with modern ammo in the firearm I was working on. The subsonic ammo cycled fine. Great video guys! Wish I had seen this before I started working on the model 12.

I remember back when the Hornady Superformance came out...on the forum I was on for AR-10s people were asking if they could shoot it...I called both Hornady, who said it was for bolt action rifles, and ArmaLite, who said the increased velocity and pressures were not recommended and could void the warranty... sometimes it's best to make some calls or send emails to find out rather than ruining your gun...my thoughts anyway.

I've had my 1884 trapdoor (mfg 1886) since 1970 and until 2000 ammo marked 45-70 GOVT was safe to use, anything over 19000 psi (SAAMI Max 45-70-405) was marked 45-70 +P, we had hundreds of incidents when manufactures started changing the labeling (dropped the +P) and loads and not putting a warning on the boxes, I was at a local shop yesterday and found 2 brands of 45-70 Govt with no warning anywhere on the box but it would not be safe for even modern trapdoors and questionable for falling block styles.

Would like to add with the M1 it’s more of a worry about port pressure than chamber pressure. Also one key feature of vintage guns is that not all of them are as stated. Plenty of WW2 / WW1 bring backs that got a 3006 reamer or a barrel swap in their lifetime to make some unique chamberings. Prime example is 7.7-06.

As the owner of an original Springfield trap door I always wonder if its safe to shoot commercial 45-70 ammunition that has no special labels warning that it's only safe to shoot in modern firearms ? Same question for my Winchester 1873 in 32-20?
@sbreheny6 ай бұрын
I believe it is NOT OK to shoot modern commercial 45-70 in the original Springfield trap door unless it specifically states that it is intended for that or if it is known to be OK (such as some of the cowboy action 45-70 from Fiocchi). 45-70 was originally a black powder cartridge and it would be easy to create MUCH higher pressure with smokeless powder than a full, compressed charge BP load would make. The Hornady reloading manual has separate entries for 45-70 for the Trapdoor and 45-70 for modern actions.
@oklahomahank23786 ай бұрын
No. Do not use those loads. I reload for my trapdoor. The original black powder load is fine. For a smokeless load I use Trail Boss with the same .405 bullet at about 900 fps. Do not use the 300 - 350 grain modern rounds. They are only safe in a modern lever action or single shot. They are quite high pressure. If you don’t reload look for .45-70 rounds labeled “Cowboy” loads. They are pretty similar to the original load, a .45 caliber 405 grain bullet with 70 grains of black powder, which works out at about 1200 fps. This will kill anything that walks the earth and is very accurate. Of course, have your gun inspected for safety. A trapdoor can be 150 years old.

@@oklahomahank2378 I purchased my 1887 vintage Springfield back in 1983 along with a couple boxes of Remington hunting ammunition marked "safe in all rifles". Back then gun writers were lamenting that the only available commercial ammo was intentionally loaded weak in case it was used in old trapdoors. Later some ammo companies produced hotter ammo labeled for use only in modern lever action rifles. I recently purchased some HSM cowboy ammunition and I'm seeing 3" groups at 50 yards. The original 1980's hunting (core-lokt) ammo is producing .80 inch groups at 50 yards but I only have one box of 20 left. The bore on mine is pretty badly pitted just curious what accuracy are you getting with your handloads? I'm with you 100% on only shooting cowboy ammunition

@jaydunbar75386 ай бұрын
I would, I’m sure plenty will say not to but the way I figure it you can take a 223 and ream it out to a 22-250 then it makes no sense at all that the barrel doesn’t have enough metal to hold the difference in pressure between 5.56 and 223, if it really even does have a pressure difference since they are measured in different ways making the numbers not comparable. With an older rifle I’d be more worried about modern ammunition in general beating it up, keep an eye for unusual wear and make sure the recoil system is in proper working order and then send it. That my two cents anyway but not my gun or my face so do as you wish with that information.
