QUICK TIP - Cut Pipe Accurately in Half (down the length)

This is a quick tip on how to accurately cut a PVC or soft metal pipe in half accurately. This technique has minimal waste as it doesn't use a tables saw blade. Its a quick and simple jig to make.

Have you noticed the halved pipe shrinking over time? I had a friend cut me 75mm pipe in half. 4-5 months later they are down to 65mm diameter and what was a perfect 180 degree semicircle is now around 200 degrees. I wonder if the PVC pipe is manufactured with some tension?

like the idea, i'm trying to cut 4" pvc in half - 5 ft lengths... had been thinking of something on the tablesaw but once you put the one side, causes an issue for the remaining side... but this would work well, if the jig was bigger and obviously quite a bit longer to provide the support as it goes through...

The jig doesn't have to be lot longer. Maybe just the length of your saw bed. You can put a stop block underneath the jig on your end to stop it from going all the way through. Then, just push the pipe through to completion. Rotation of the pipe may be an issue to watch out for.

I run the pipe through the table saw twice works really well like cutting a 2x4. jut make a mark on the top point and don't fudge. ?

Derek Cadmus yes you could offset the fence to cut the right hand cut and then place shim between the jig and the fence to make the left hand cut. Is that what you meant?

I like tips, not really sold on this one as the pipe could still roll in the jig.

The jig was made snug to prevent this, I cut 40 sections with no roll at all

Can I cut a 1 inch band down the center of pvc pipe using a miter saw? I only want to cut a 1 inch strip out of the pvc pipe

I would suggest making a jig to hold the pipe safely at 90° to the mitre saw fence. Keeping the hands well away from the blade, as it sounds a bit risky. Do you have any other tool that may be safer?

I think the left side is a bit unnecessary, since you can just use the fence for that. So actually you can clamp the piece of pipe with just a piece of wood. But normally I actually just use my sled and hold the pipe.

Aluminium will cut the same way depending on thickness For steel I would make a jig using a cutting wheel on a grinder

Yeah, how about if you need a full-length pipe cut in half? Like 10' or 14' or more feet long??? ...Are you still going to base this 6-inch long jig???... and that's all I got to ask about that

Yes you make the jig so you can slide it in to the blade, clamp it to the table, but extend a little more off the table for extra support and then feed the pipe through the jig.

nice, but wish you had mentioned you need a table saw to do this... only have portable tools (jigsaw, dremel, circular saw) so this isn't gonna work. :(

Nice for a short piece of pipe unless you manage to rotate the pipe as it hits the saw. I need to rip a full 10 ft joint using a jigsaw. LOL. I can make a jig too I guess that will keep it from rotating. 3/4" is what I am working with.

I realize this is an old vid....but I was wondering if there is a method for cutting a large sonotube, evenly down the length as well. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. =)

Annie o well my first thought is a sonotube is like a big toilet roll, wound the same way in a spiral... if cut in half lengthwise it may start to in ravel, not sure how well bonded they are. As for cutting one evenly in half, you could make a trough to push it through. At the mid point on the trough, at either side screw some Stanley knife blades pointing in to the cardboard at a 45°. The key would be to sure there was no rotation of the tube so you would need a reference line drawn down one side of the tube so that as you pushed the tube though the jig you could ensure the line was following the blade on one side. You may need to make a few passes to get though the cardboard. You could swap out the Stanley blades for jigsaws in the jig ;) I would suggest accurately marking the cuts on each side and doing it manually with a Stanley knife and a straight edge. unless you have a lot of them to do.
