My boys and I very much enjoyed and still enjoy the "Now I'm reading" books we have quite a few and all the way up to level 4 I think. We even found a used set based on science. I love how they are phonics base and don't focus on using sight words mixed in. They truly are book that a beginning reader can sound out and read every word on their own! A few of my boys favorite stories from this series is "frog cops" and the one where a cub sits on gum and ends up chewing it! They still read this series over and over and they're 7 and 8 1/2. I'm not a huge fan of Bob book either. I tried using them in the beginning of homeschooling, but I found they just didn't work for phonics progressive teaching. So I now incorporate them into the read to mom time as fluency practice. We use the same method and put a sticker in the back for everytime they read though it once and I like for them to read them about 3 to 4 times, anymore than that and they have it memorized or are bored with it! I also use the Abeka 1 grade readers, but I'm not a huge fan of those either. I do love the Sing, Spell, Read and Write readers! They wonderful wholesome stories that are well laid out for progressive phonics teaching! And of course they classic readers like little bear, frog and toad, dick and Jane. I usually start these when have a pretty good grasp on basic phonics or if they show interest in wanting to read them. Thanks for sharing! This would've been super amazingly helpful if I was a in first years of homeschooling!

I agree I don't like beginning phonics readers that have a lot of sight words. I like to teach sight words slowly when incorportated into a text. I don't use a lot of things like flash cards to teach sight words. However, once they have more of the basic skills down, then I use them for games. I haven't checked out the Sing, Spell, Read and Write yet. I will keep my eye out for them! My daughter's first real book was Little Bear. :) I have a huge home library and have I large collection of leveled readers. I am a book collector. :) Hope you have a great homeschool year!!!
