EXCELLENT vid, 1 of your best. Why? Because it's a great example of pressure ( or vacuum in this case ) vs VOLUME. And just like a fuel pressure gauge can trick you with good pressure but unknown flow, your case study shows us how a vacuum gauge can trick ya too. Does it register? Yeah.. Can the computer command it electrically? Yes. DOES IT FLOW? Not enough. I love the quick and dirty test of disconnecting the tank feed side, and then commanding the sol. 100%. Yes, you should expect there to be a giant vacuum leak as well as the car idling silly. If you don't have that, it simply isn't working right mechanically. Thx for sharing all of these EVAP vids. Nothing can stress a tech more than all of the variables of fixing that system.

Good info Mr. O.. For those that don't have a fancy pants bi-directional scan tool the purge valve is easy enough to bench test. All you need is a 12 volt source and your lungs. A vacuum pump wouldn't hurt to have either. ;-)

I fixed the meter connections along with replacing the main breaker in the panel, which was breaking down internally and tripping. I'm trying to test this but the scantool won't allow me to open the purgevalve while it's running (it's says conditions have to be met, which includes engine off), got any tips? I find it really strange how you're supposed to test a purge without vaccuum, scantool is Autel Maxisys.

Is there a way to do this testing without a bidirectional scan tool? I have a P0455 on my sons 98 dodge neon and don't want to shoot the parts cannon at it. If not what's the most inexpensive scan tool that will give the ability to command the purge solenoid closed?
@SouthMainAuto6 жыл бұрын
Actually the Neon will use a LDP system. they are a lot different then these to be honest.
@pilotsimms5356 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a "no" . . . . . but very diplomatic.
@rchick96826 жыл бұрын
I found the purge solenoid under the hood right side of the engine compartment very easy to get to and located the LDP under the front passenger fender liner PITA to get to. Already found a dime size hole in the fuel filler neck and thought that was the issue but I replaced it and still have the code. Is there a good scan tool that you would recommend for the DIY'er that does not cost more than the car I'm working on?
@throttlebottle59066 жыл бұрын
I don't recall what all lines and hoses the neons had exactly, but they likely have a bunch of rubber sections, so check every hose/end in the evap system, you'll likely find dry-rot and probably splits all over near the ends... pretty sure they were one of the "well known's" with hoses that split and crack on the charcoal canister, fuel tank and had sections of rubber hose joining steel line sections from front to rear.
@Blazer02LS6 жыл бұрын
On a 98 one of the older units will work. The old brick Snap On MT 2500 and 2900 can be had reasonable and they have cartridges up to 2008 Or get something that doesn't need cartridges like an OTC Genisys (EVO or version 4/5 NOT the touch, it's junk) with the smartcable. Not a super fast tool but it will work on a lot of vehicles. There are a few on Ebay all the time, one on there at the moment that is updated to 2012 vehicles. seller duramax_lbz

Have GM 3800 engine. OBD2 indicated bad purge valve/solenoid. Bought one ...went to r&r and discovered that someone had applied electrical tape over the connector on one of the nylon vacuum lines. Removed tape and found the connector was cracked. Do they make replacement end connectors for these lines or do I have to replace the whole assembly? Also will check engine light go off by itself when computer recycles or must code be cleared? Thanks

Hi Eric, are you using a different camera in past month or so? A lot of recent videos will get audio out of sync with video and video does a slow down or maybe its losing frames. I just watch a very old SMA video and it played perfectly. I thought it was a Google update on this phone but don't think so. I can fix the out of sync audio and slow video by a click to Forwarding to next video then click to reversing back to the video having the problem. Anyone else seeing the out of sync audio? Also sometimes the video freezes, the forward the reverse also fixes this. Looks like it started problem 2-3 months ago spot checking videos.

I see someone got a new toy? So did you keep your Snappy tool? I'm sure you did. I saw the title for your video and 5 hours ago my buddy called me about his 08 Chevy pickup with the po455 code and he started the Parts Canon already with the solenoid and I told him to stop it and I will come look at it tomorrow so now I have to figure that out being that he replace the solenoid. I wonder if he forgot to clear it and the code came back or stayed as a hard code? Any other ideas is this will be something new for me in that area normally I don't get that lucky plus it's a freebie being that he owns the land where I hunt deer at and I might need to go this year. Throw me some ideas it is a 08 Chevy pickup if I remember him saying properly. Maybe it's an 07 but shouldn't be much difference but I can see how that intelligent Diagnostics will work and see if that does anything worth a hoot for me as that's hit-and-miss and I don't have Pro to man because that is just too dang expensive for me.
