Quick Tip: Must-Have Replacement Parts for Your Glock®

Have you just bought a new pistol? And maybe you're thinking like a mechanic: What replacement parts should I have for it, JIC? Brownells Gun Techs Steve and Caleb are here to give us the skinny. If your new gun is a Glock® - or any semi-auto pistol, really - the recoil spring assembly will eventually have to be replaced. It's like changing the oil on your car: replace the recoil spring every 5,000 rounds. Any gun spring will lose its springiness eventually, so it doesn't hurt to have a spare striker spring, extractor spring, and magazine spring, too. A replacement follower and base plate for the magazine are good to have on hand, especially if you drop mags on hard surfaces during competition. Or just buy some spare Glock® factory mags. You can NEVER have enough spare mags! Those are the parts that WEAR OUT on a Glock®. Pins and other small parts DO disappear during disassembly for cleaning (do they go where lost socks go?), so you may want to get those, too. Are there any other parts we didn't mention? Tell us in the comments below.
Time for a tactical reload of gun wisdom! Watch more Brownells videos here: www.brownellsvideos.com

Kudos for the Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you considered - Dinanlinson Energy Source Approach (google it)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for taking your penis length to the next level without the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my best friend Jordan after many years got cool results with it.

@@clintcannon1902 ya, sounds like a load of bubkiss. Buy your spring and shoot away. while you're at it, consider the "negative" connector. If you don't know how to install, consider finding an armorer. Or you can check youtube for DIY videos. it isn't difficult to do. Now, a minor caveat, if you are an LEO, then you should check your Agency policy and State law for "State" approved duty firearms detailing what you can and can't have. I know in Ontario, Canada, we are regulated for duty pistols. But for civilian use, it's not regulated.

This is just me, but especially if/when I buy a used Glock, I like to detail strip it and swap out ALL the springs--well, maybe not the slide stop and slide lock springs, but the recoil spring, trigger spring, striker spring, extractor spring, maybe the firing pin block spring. I also like to grab a spare pin set and extractor, even if I don't necessarily swap those out right away (I'll usually only do that if I notice high wear or chipping on the one already in the gun). If I see a lot of wear on the locking block I may make sure to have a spare for that model in the parts bin, but that's just me being cautious. Come to think of it, I should get another set of pins, springs, and small parts for my most-used Glocks as a just-in-case. Then again, I like to be a little cautious with my part-replacement schedules. And even if I don't actually swap the replacement in, I like to have it on hand as a just-in-case spare. All this even though I don't shoot anywhere near as much as I'd like, the last couple years.

I keep my magazines stored loaded in a climate sealed case with 15 loaded instead of the 17. Because those last 2 rounds give that spring 90% of the wear over a 10 year time. So I rotate my storage every 5 years. After 5 years of storage I shoot it and restore the magazines loaded after measuring the springs.

It's not a bad idea to replace your pre gen 5 trigger bar and ejector housing with gen 5 parts. They went from a extention spring (gen 1-4) to a compression spring (gen 5). The extention springs are well known to break.

5000? 90%+ of people won't fire 500 rounds through any gun they own, and thats being generous. I'm not like that, but most gun owners probably own just 1 pistol that gets 1 box fired through it and stuck in a drawer. Nearly all of these new panic buyers are these type of people. I'd say a large amount never get fired at all!

You might eventually need to replace the mainspring depending on how many rounds you put through it. Only thing I can think of that might potentially break (that wouldn't outright trash the gun) would be firing pin. Maybe extractor/extractor spring depending on what kind of bolt you have.
