Your'e the Man. Honda Hornet 2006 with progressively squeaking front brakes. Took them apart yesterday, cleaned them up, scuffed the pads with light sand paper, greased the pin and applied a thin edge of silicon grease to the outer pad surfaces. Hell that made them worse. Saw your post. The Honda bobbins are quite narrow, so I eliminated the nut and bolt squeeze and just sprayed brake cleaner into both sides of the described gap........ tah dah!1 quiet as a mouse. thanks.

I am in my first year of biking and have a cbr 600, my front break has just started squeaking so i am gonna try this. The heat from weather has made it worse, also one of the fork oil seals is bad so maybe its contributed to dirt
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
Awesome bike. I honestly love CBR600's. Ensuring to get that oil leak fixed is paramount over squeaky brakes. Oil leaking from the forks onto your brake caliper is a dangerous mix. Hopefully this method works for you. I would love to know how it goes.

Going through an 04 gixxer I bought for next to nothing . The motor / trans are solid. Replacing the chain and just making sure this is road worthy before getting too far on the road. The front pads seem good at least as far as pad thickness and no signs of rotor grooves go, but the calipers are black with debris which could be leaking or previous leakage, the fluid is topped off and appears clean in the reservoir and nothing is wet on or around the calipers. I know this hasn't been ridden in over 2-3 years, so 2 questions; #1 What can I clean this black crap off of the calipers with? #2 If you were tasked with cleaning the wheels (rims) on a bike that sat out in the harsh winter/summer midwest elements for years would you recommend hand polishing or using something more efficient like an electric/air polishing tool? (Ideally I would prefer pulling the wheels apart and having them blasted and powder coated but rather not spend any more than needed on a bike I intend to flip) My skill set has always been pretty good with the mechanical side of things but detail work always has me worried I'm going to do more damage than good.

Was having squeaks at 1-4 MPH going to a stop, did this and it fixed it. thanks! I already bought $110 brake pads even though my OEM are good, hoping to fix the squeaky brakes, btw this is the only thing online i could find about fixing it about your way! QUESTION:: When I did this half of my bobbins were seized, took a lot to move them the others were easier to move, once I got to spraying and it started moving they were squeaking is this normal or do I need to keep cleaning till the bobbins stop squeaking? (Even though I'm not having brake squeaking anymore would like to know just in case it starts up again, and noticed in the video your bobbins did not squeak at all when you turn them)
@TheMotorcycleBoss5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad to know the trick worked for you. I originally learned this trick from a channel called "Moonfleet41" aka "Delboy's Garage". I then found out that it was a common dealer trick to get brakes to stop squeaking. With regard to your squeaky bobbins, it doesn't matter if they squeak or not. As you can tell, it has no association with squeaky brakes. The best thing you can do is continue to spray the bobbins until you dont see grime or dust coming out of them anymore then you should be all set. I hope this helps. I appreciate the comment. Good luck out there and ride safe.

What size nut did you use? Think I need to do this as my blackbird brakes are squeaking now. Good tip!
@TheMotorcycleBoss7 жыл бұрын
daniel potter not sure. You want to use a bolt that is almost the same size as the hole. It's different on each bike
@HighGrade_FireBlade2 жыл бұрын
If you tighten the bolt even a hair too much you’ll flatten out the wave washer that acts as a spring and holds the bobbins stiff. The bobbins have nothing to do with preventing brake squeak or judder. It’s to help with thermal expansion. A little brake dust isn’t going to resist the effects of thermal expansion. I asked Dave Moss at the track and he said it’s one of the stupidest things people do to their brakes.
@TheMotorcycleBoss2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! You are correct. However; I had squeaky brakes and tried everything from cleaning the rotor to lubing up pins and adding brake quiet. I performed this little trick and boom. Squeak was gone. I figure that it has to do with the rotor being too tight to the carrier causing the micro-vibrations to resonate throughout the wheel. Kind of like a wine glass when you rub your finger on the rim. In any case, that is my first-hand experience with it. Just like people who may or may not believe in god, we all have our own first-hand experiences to believe in what we believe in. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter however. Ride safe! Cheers!

What about a rotor without this mechanism.. can it flex like the one on my honda pcx ? I keep hearing some noise coming from the brake caliper ?
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 ай бұрын
Solid rotors can be more prone to warping due to the lack of bobbins. With bobbins (or floating rotors) the expansion and contraction due to heat allows some give and flexibility. Solid rotors don't have this ability and when they expand, they can warp. However; you can still reduce brake squeak on Solid rotors by deglazing brake pads, thoroughly cleaning your rotors, tightening bolts to their correct torque specs, and lubricating the proper brake components. I hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!

does this work on the cicada squeak too? because someone told me i needed to seat my pads, and it didn't work.
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 ай бұрын
@npzninja without hearing it for myself, it is difficult to know. There are a few different causes of brake squeak. Just try to remedy it as best you can by performing this trick, thoroughly cleaning your rotors, deglazing brake pads, and ensuring all points are lubed that need to be if necessary for your bike. Sometimes simply installing low quality pads can create a squeak. So upgrading your pads may alleviate the issue if everything else has been done but fails to work. Hope this helps!

could you break your rotor if done incorrectly, eg if tightented it too much
@TheMotorcycleBoss7 жыл бұрын
MultiGuitarman21 i will not say you can't. but it is very unlikely because you would have to crank on it pretty hard to get that to damage your rotor. if anything you may bend the bobbin if you tighten it too hard. but even to do that, you would require a great deal of leverage. as long as you aren't using breaker bars, drills, or impact guns, you shouldn't have to worry about messing up your rotor or bobbins doing this trick. great question. thank you for your input.

If the rotor is able to move a little bit in an axial manner; (closer and further from the rim) that is usually an acceptable play. However; if there is radial play, as in it can move forward, back, up, or down, that requires replacement. Some bobbins are spring-loaded and the internal spring may have become siezed due to crud and build-up. Performing this bobbin cleaning may restore it to its usual function. If not, may require replacement.

This a cheap band-aid and I would never do this to my bike. You are transforming brake dust into liquid sand paper and grinding it in, widening the factory tolerances on a semi-floating rotor. @TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean. However, the goal isn't to get it to spin. It's to break loose the brake dust stuck between the bobbin and rotor/rotor basket. If you can vibrate it out that's fine too as long as it gets out. But seeing how most supersports come with holes in the bobbins, it simply just makes it an easier way to do the service.

@TheMotorcycleBoss6 жыл бұрын
Seems like an interesting approach although i am a bit skeptical as to the effectiveness of getting brake dust out of the bobbins. That's the reason you want to move the bobbins because the brake dust is stuck and compressed. Don't see that approach being as effective because of that.
