I've read literature stating that brake fluid absorbs average 3% water content from the atmosphere per year. Water boils and creates vapor which is compressible, and water oxidizes metals. Keep it up FRM you are knowledgeable, thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah the BG brake flusher, you have to buy their fluid to get to use the machine for free. All I can say is if you use a brake flush machine you'll never want to go back to the old ways. But you'll be using a lot of brake fluid.

I learned and did two man brake fluid flushes the old fashioned way for years. I found that a great alternative to the BG machine to perform one man pressure flushes (especially for lower volume shops or even advanced DIYers) is the Mityvac MV6840 Pressure Flush Kit. Basically does the same thing the BG machine does without applying vacuum to the caliper bleeder valve (and you do not need to put in more than about half quart of fluid for one vehicle). Its affordable and comes with a nice complement of master cylinder caps. Been using it for several years now on both domestic and asian vehicles, works like a champ for me.

I'm on board with BG flushes, I do them on my own vehicles. Who ever thinks there bs is filled with lies from the manufacture trying to sell a "maintenance free" vehicle. Plus there easy to do and easy money.

We have the same flush machine only ours is red not black lol i never use the vacuum end, i let the end drain into the oil drain or a pan

Nice tips! Yeah I don’t use the bg machine to bleed brakes because never properly bled the brake system but use it for the flushing

Something as simple as that most don’t think about. Most people think flush it’s radiator or transmission those are the two I think mentioned way more. Brake fluid should be flushed as well. Heat cycles from the brake system can cause issues if brake fluid has a high content of water.. great video. Brakes are the second most important thing on the vehicle after steering of course.

FRM didn't mention it, but he also uses a brake fluid hydrometer to measure how much moisture is in the fluid.

Oh yeah, I recommend brake flushes all the time even if my brake fluid tester says its good. Brakes are very important and one of the most neglected fluids. Gotta change it👍

Am I spoiled for being taught to bleed brakes using the brake machine and not the old fashioned way by pumping the brake? 😅 also the only struggle I have is sometimes the adapter for the master cylinder will not always seal tightly causing unnecessary spills 😬 even if it's the right adapter. Any advice? I work at a alfa romeo/ fiat brand dealership so idk if it's the Italian cars I'm working on have a different fitting? Or it's me and I'm doing something wrong and just don't realize it.

Nissan requires disconnecting the ABS actuator connector or negative battery terminal and bleeding the calipers starting front right, front left, right rear, left rear wheels. I used a vacuum bleeder connected to an air compressor and it worked fine without the help of a second person.

FRM can you make a video about what is expected from the tech? I've been at a few shops and dealers and found it's all over the place. The best was a dealer where the tech was responsible only for inspections, repair, test drives and sending parts list with labor time on it. Parts looked up parts and prices and service write took the labor time and put the quote together. They had porters to wash cars afterwards. Another dealer expected us to do all that and vacuum as well as shine the windows. Now at another shop not dealer they have me checking in cars. Taking down vins and plates and other info. The way I learned that was the service writers job. Ps I've always been flat rate so I don't make any money off the extra things I have to do.

Pick up a pressure bleeder on Amazon, FCP, anywhere else on line that sells tools. A set of 6 point wrenches for the bleeders. Bleed any brakes in less than 20 min. A chain used to pay me .7 for a brake fluid flush. I'd do em for less.

Honda Accord V6 recommended every 3 years per Honda. Acura TL/TSX recommenced every 2 years per Acura. Why does the same company have 2 different recommendations for nearly identical brake systems? ... Why does Ferrari say change fluid every year? Performance! Old brake fluid has a lower boiling point and will reduce brake pressure as it heats up. Old fluid = longer stopping distances, especially from highways speeds. We consider “dry” brake fluid as an essential safety item.

Toyota every 30,000 km or 20 years, front and rear diff oils too if it has them. Would rather just check the shit and leave if it's ok but cos it's part of the schedule and most newer cars are on scheduled maintenance it has to be done!

Depending on how’s your brake machine works and what the repair I’ll apply pressure at the caliper and push all the air out through the master cylinder for if I did like brake lines or something

Often, it depends on the manufacturer's recommendations. For example, I just worked on a Nissan this afternoon where the factory shop manual specified the order to bleed the calipers as: Right rear → Left front → Left rear →Right front.
