Can you do a review on Home on the Range? I want to hear your take on it. BTW, I am a huge fan of HOTR, love the movie in every way from art to music to voice acting, but if anyone here doesn't like the movie, I won't force you to stomach it. I just want HOTR to have a little recognition as at least a work of art besides being a kid's quirky comedy-western movie 😘🐄

I'm really glad that Disney isn't relying on a twist villain/villain anymore and created a story that explores real life issues in family dynamics. Abuela is somewhat an antagonist but she really isn't purely evil nor a bad person, she's just traumatized from losing her home and the love of her life that she didn't want that to ever happen again, but never even noticing that times have changed and the war was probably long over and everything is at peace and her family didn't needed that extra pressure on themselves anymore

I can understand why people would be worried about Disney "cashing in" on the culture, but the culture was actually represented really well! There were so many little details that were done right! Mirabel does the lip-point toward Antonio's present, there seemed to be silletas in the village, Félix seems to be a costeño, they had classic food from the region, Bruno says "Sana sana colita de rana" to casita, they played classic Colombian music at Antonio's event, a singer from Medellín sang "Dos Oruguitas", Camilo does the African Finger Snap (common in Latin America) at Antonio's event, Agustín said "miércoles" when Dolores overheard them (which is the English equivalent of saying "crap"), and they even touched on the tragic history of terrorism in Colombia! Whether it was an attempt to cash in or not, I can't say, but I CAN say that this film did an AMAZING job of representing Colombian culture, as well as many aspects of Latino culture in general.

I really like how you recognize that the antagonist is generational trauma. Also, the end is revealing Mirabel's gift. Her gift is keeping the family together and the house itself. Just because it isn't magical, doesn't mean that she herself isn't gifted.

@Alex see but the trauma didnt just happen, the grandmother caused it with her own actions. And while she may have her own trauma that lead to her actions, she still should have to bear the brunt of responsibility for what she and how it hurt people. She may not be the villain, but she is the cause of the pain in this movie. And also Mirabel’s ‘power’ being to keep the family from falling apart, and thus getting rejected by her family’s magic is just dogshit and painful “oh well at least you try being special like us”
@atomiccrouton
@atomiccrouton 2 жыл бұрын
@@Closer2Zero I don't think you understand how generational trauma works. One generation experiences traumatic events and then passes that along to other generations. This does not give her a free pass for her actions or excuse her from her actions. That still doesn't change the fact that it's the trauma that's the antagonistic force. The grandmother had her husband murdered in front of her. That's going to leave lasting damage. Also, just because you think the ending of a movie is bad doesn't change how it ended.

@@atomiccrouton i don't think the ending was trying to portray that mirabel's gift was keeping the family together. Even if it was i personally think that isn't a very good gift. It should be up to the entire family to do that, not have the pressure be placed on one person. I think a better way to interpret it is that the family realised they should value mirabel just as much as the rest of the them even though she doesn't have a magical ability

I feel like this movie could spawn a great animated series. People love the characters and they could have great side stories, more development and exploration of their powers and valley and more. You know what this movie is missing? A comedic relief sidekick/animal to sell plushies of! And I think that's why it was so good, it has two changes from the same old formula. It's a simpler plot and no annoying character made purposefully for marketing/gags. After Raya and tbh all live action movies of the past few years, a simple self contained world with no big journey is so refreshing lmao. Raya had so much they barley got to explore any of it.

If I were to give this film criticism, it's the final build up of the house's collapse. Now I loved how Mirabel finally stood up to Abuela, but considering the house represents the whole family's relationship, you'd think it would collapse due to them all having a massive argument, but it was just between Mirabel and Abuela. Plus, having them all just vent their feeling towards Abuela would have been more gut punching instead of Mirabel addressing their issues. Maybe that's just me :)
@kenny995
@kenny995 2 жыл бұрын
This is just my thought, but I think the magic of the house is tied to Mirabel. In Brunos vision it only showed Mirabel and the house, and Mirabel was the only one who saw the premonition of cracks forming during Antonio's party. When she notices Luisa is struggling, cracks form and the door falters. But when she helps Isabella the house cracks retreat. Everything that happens with the house happens because of what she perceives.
@dragongirl89115
@dragongirl89115 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's more that Mirabel was the only one willing to stand up to her. Everyone in the family was afraid of Abuela's opinion. She was the matriarch, the leader of the family. When in abusive familiar situations, it can be insanely difficult to bring these issues up. Think of this too, how Abuela treated Mirabel when she never got a gift from the house. The other children noticed how she was basically rejected and tred upon, that wasn't something they wanted either. Mirabel had to be the one to bring it up. It wouldn't have had the same power from the other siblings, not with the way the movie was structured.
@onijester56
@onijester56 2 жыл бұрын
One line change: when Mirabel says that Isabella isn't happy, Abuela quips back as she does with the "Of course she isn't happy! You ruined her engagement!" and then instead of Mirabel speaking it's Isabella who tells Abuela off. Even just repeat the line from before her song, "I never wanted to get married in the first place!" Luisa may or may not be able to then chip in by delivering the "You don't care about us, you only care about our powers" line that triggers the collapse. It might be more powerful delivered by Luisa, finally dropping the 'crushing weight' she's been struggling with. But the Isabella line-inclusion is the minimum I would have petitioned for.

To me, the most underrated song of this movie, Waiting on a Miracle, is definitely my favorite. The slow-mo visuals. The gut wrenching, relatable lyrics. Everything about it comes together in such an amazing way. It's a bit sad how it's not getting as much love as the other songs, especially considering it's the main character's "I want" song. Every single song in this movie is amazing, but Waiting on a Miracle speaks to me on another level.

I do wish the film was longer. Like i would have loved it if each family member got an arc exploring their issues. Like imagine if Camillo got a song about how he might be struggling with forming an identity for himself bc he's a shapeshifter and is always expected to be someone else all the time, or Pepa and Felix could have a duet abt Pepa's struggle with emotional regulation and how she feels forced to bottle up her emotions all the time (and how much Felix loves his), the possibilities are endless
@NoiseDay
@NoiseDay 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did think the two songs we got from Mirabel's sisters weren't quite enough to explore the extent to which the family was messed up. Like how her mom and dad both seem pretty casual and lighthearted. Maybe a really toned down song where the parents talk about what it's like to have their brother Bruno disappear, maybe talk about how they're mad or sad, but they understand why he left given the situation he was in. I think that would have added a little more seriousness to the situation. Bruno just got the "crazy uncle" treatment, but they didn't really talk about what it would be like for your brother or son to vanish without a word, even if they didn't understand him very well.

As a Colombian, I'm so happy to have more positive representation in mainstream animation. This movie is like the colombian version of "i saw it and i clapped!" with how many typical colombian things i saw in backgrounds. Also I dont see enough people talking about the Dos Oruguitas scene which is pretty dark. It shows how Colombia has sadly been plagued by so much civil war and violence, something my grandparents went through, but in the end come out strong.

Personally, I think that “what else can I do” is my favorite song in the movie, mainly because I relate to it so much as an artist. I feel like a lot of artists are only appreciated for one thing that they’re good at, which can ultimately cause the artist themselves to limit themselves to what other people like rather than what they enjoy making. This was especially true for Leonardo da Vinci. You know how his most famous painting is the Mona Lisa? Well guess what- he actually didn’t enjoy painting all that much. And also he found the male figure far more interesting than the female figure. He made FAR more than you probably realise- like he made so much stuff and yet he’s probably primarily remembered for a painting of a woman.

It was kind of [sad-] funny to hear reports on Colombia's response to Encanto that amounted to: "Hey, a movie that portrays our culture as something other than drug dealers? Yes, please..." It seems like if we're going to have dozens of streaming services (at least, until the inevitable collapse), they ought to be the ones scouting outside of North America for works from other countries. Very little is going to get a theatrical release in Marvel/pandemic times, but there's an avenue that could expose us to works well outside of our country, and we've only just seen the tiniest tip of the iceberg in that direction. It would sure beat the hell out of half of what Netflix, HBO, Disney+, Paramount, et. al. are self-producing.

I liked Encanto! When watching it, it reminded me a lot of “The Incredibles” with the superpowered family, but it puts its own spin on it and is different enough to be its own thing. Characters have good chemistry and are fun in personality and designs. Some of them are underutilized, but I see this IP easily being spun-off to a series or short film, so it isn’t a big letdown. Another aspect I liked was the small, unapologetically cartoonish bits in its visuals (the last film I can recall that did this was “Chicken Little” but to a higher degree) which adds to it’s uniqueness rather than distracts from it. Just a really fun time overall; I personally am not too crazy about Encanto, but I can _definitely_ see why people are loving it. Good job, Disney (5/5)

Unpopular opinion: The transitions into the songs weren't the best, Surface Pressure felt like a music video (I still love it), Bruno was the best transitions into music. I do really enjoy this movie, it was beautiful, great characters and the story was intriguing, I just, along with I'm sure are a lot of other people, wished there was more Bruno. This. It was really jarring for the setting and tone to turn that quickly, and its honestly a little funny how abrupt the transition from talking to singing is. Dammit Disney...was so close to not cry to that movie but that song about Pedro and Abuela just shreds my heart....I got 2 theory about the candle : 1. It's actually the soul of Pedro in the candle ( the butterfly on it being a dead give away) finally giving a safe home to his family and feeling hurt about how Abuela is treating her family, forgetting the sacrifice and who the miracle is for. 2. The house is Pedro and the candle is his sacrifice...which is why it's fading, because Abuela forgot who the miracle was for...

It's my pet theory that Mirabel's 'gift' as it were, was to serve as the future core of the house's power. Basically, she is to be the next matriarch, since Abuela isn't going to live forever. Her earnestness on the part of helping the family in spite of not having a gift, and her eventual drive to understand what might be bothering family members individually is part of what makes her a good fit for the role in future. The magic starts fading because of the intense pressure that Abuela puts them under coming to a head is the ultimate cause for it to fail, but in another sense it's because Mirabel specifically shatters (however temporarily) upon her internalizing that her Abuela will never see each of the family, but especially her, as good enough, especially when they try to express themselves outside of her (Abuela's) preconceptions as to how they should conduct themselves. Basically, Mirabel, in that moment, had given up her future role as the core of the family, the centre node that holds the family together. That was when the crumbling magic lost its anchor and the house could no longer maintain its form without the key foundation, both its original and future core, that was holding it together. Its original cornerstone (Abuela) had drifted away from her original intended role as the loving, encouraging heart of the family that provided sanctuary and direction to her family, and the future cornerstone had lost heart.

That was something I wondered about too. I get that there's a ton of issues they all still have to work through as a family (and presumably do so post-film), but it still kind of baffled me that we as an audience are shown everyone in town shutting up about Bruno (and the family of course treating him as a hush-hush subject, basically taboo) for what can only be YEARS...and then the film ends with them all just acting like him being there is totally normal and not a shocking (albeit newly welcome) experience. He was gone for at least a DECADE and it's like one hug and a song later means he's as accepted as the colour of the wallpaper 🤣

I wanted them to go deeper and really address the issues instead of the characters just having a quick sappy conversation and a hug. There were also some weird little plot things that seemed to not make sense. Like why did the kids at the beginning not know mirabel has powers? It seems like everyone else in the town knows! Why is Bruno the only one who needs a special setting and tools to use his power? How does mirabel get back over that gap at the top of the staircase in Bruno’s tower lol? And why the hell are these people not popping out kids like christians in the quiverfull movement to maximize the magic lmao😭

I agree 100% I feel like the entire relationship between Bruno and his mother and sisters was so flushed over. All they tell us is Bruno left because he “didn’t care about the family”. And that Abuela only saw the “worst in him”. They never really go into detail about WHY abuela thinks Bruno didn’t care for the family. They should have shown Bruno’s sisters and them talking about why they believe he left. It would have been much better if they showed an entire flashback scene of Bruno the night he disappeared, and his sisters frantically looking for him around the town. Then over time realizing he’s never coming back. One thing that doesn’t make any sense is out in the movie, everyone’s like “oh Bruno disappeared”. But did any of them even try to go looking for him!? They never even show any flashback scenes or anything like that. I’m telling you if my brother went missing I’d be searching the entire town , leaving no place Unsearched. OK so another problem I have with the movie that I thought of. When Mirabel discovers the painting in the hallway, that leads to the walls where Bruno’s been living, she literally discovers it in like 20 seconds , so how the hell did nobody notice this painting with a HOLE behind it for 10 years!? When Mirabel literally sees it after a rat goes behind it. Also did I mention how this secret entry way is RIGHT NEXT TO DOLORESES ROOM!!!?? She literally probably heard him everyday coming in and out of that hole lmfao.

One thing I think that's woefully under-discussed in the story is how it is in many respects a Disney-fied (i.e. way more child-friendly than the original) version of Cien años de soledad, a very famous novel by a Colombian author, Gabriel García Márquez. Magical realism is pretty well-worked into the Latin American literary identity, and I think that played a large part in making Encanto feel so genuine in its representation.

I have a friend who's Mexican, and a costumer, and she was telling me about how they were very careful to make sure the designs reflected Colombian culture versus Mexican or "generic Latin American" costumes. I'm hoping for a good series or good squeal to come off this but I just hope they don't put a villian in. If they did make a series or squeal it could do it form different points of view to see how things are changing and what do they think about sustion there in like the doors being wiped and that strangers can now come visit them more easier. Also how have relationship with other in the family and community have changed, showing how something are easy to change and how others have not. When they do decide to bring New characters and New technology that strangers bring in and how magic changes the tech and how the tech change the community is when each family member are fleshed out more.

I see the magic coming back in the end more as a metaphore for "Family is magic, but only if everyone accepts and supports each other, otherwise it's short lived and will crumble". So yeah, the return of the magic candle is more about the family healing all the damage they did to each other and start again from a better place.

I wasn't necessarily looking forward to this film at first and added it to my Top 5 Anticipated Animated Films of 2021 after either My Father’s Dragon or The Heart Of Them got delayed into 2022. Then all of the sudden, once again, I was proven so wrong on how I was going to like this movie. This is the second year in a row of this decade that the Best Animated Feature of a 2020's year outperformed the Most Anticipated Animated Feature of a 2020's year. Will it happen again in 2022 with Lightyear?

The movie is literally ASKING for a short. Just a good 15 minutes on mini-stories exploring more of the family; going from how Agustin and Felix fell in love with Julieta and Pepa, the cousins helping Dolores on her dates with Mariano, Bruno getting back into his family and defining relationships, such as Camilo and Mirabel, since they're the same age. Basically give us the attention Camilo and Dorlores deserved, and a showcase at their rooms too.

When I first watched this and saw Isabela for the first time, I literally jumped up like a little kid and kept shouting "SHE'S JUST LIKE ME!! SHE LOOKS LIKE ME!!", tears in my eyes and everything. I think t was the first time I've seen a female character with my nose type and skintone be described as perfect and beautiful in an animated movie so it was a goddamn blessing to finally see one come to life in a great movie with excellent visuals. (Not to mention we share similar names so I can say I'm a "Disney princess")

God, I know exactly how you feel! When I first watched the movie I was blown away over how much Mirabel looked like me. Large, but softish nose. Brown eyes behind big glasses. Thick eyebrows, rosy cheeks, and blended freckles. A rounded face with hair that has my exact style and curl pattern outlining it. I was even wearing a dress similar to hers at the time. And if that wasn’t enough, we’re the same age! It’s just so exciting to see a character who looks and acts almost exactly like you. It honestly makes them feel so much more real.

The work that went behind Encanto is so cool. Every character has their own dance style from different places in Columbia. They hired choreographers and the animators watched videos of them dancing. They had multiple trips to the country to learn what they could. They took inspiration from the smaller towns and cities. I'm a cultural anthropology major so I kinda nerd out on this stuff. 😅

Really loved the film, _Encanto_ and it was awesome to watch this on Disney+ on Christmas Eve with my family. Although I prefer Coco over this film, I still enjoyed the film for the main protagonist Mirabel voiced by Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa in Brooklyn 99), it's unique cast of characters with Dolores and Camilo being the standout and the songs, with my favorites being "We Don't Talk about Bruno" and "Dos Orugitas" which the latter did make me cry, I also did love Mirabel's relationship with each family member especially her relationship with her parents, her sisters, her cousin Antonio, her Abuela, and her Tío Bruno voiced by John Leguizamo. Even I appreciate that Disney and the people who made the film did their research on Colombia and showing more Latin American representation in an animated film.

When people comment about Disney "cash grabbing" by representing other cultures- I think it's quite the opposite. I think it's natural to want to immerse yourself in things that are familiar, comforting, and support your existing beliefs about the world. An American company known for its "American values" producing a movie exploring Colombian culture- that's a little out of left field. It's unfamiliar for their white audiences and therefore less profitable. Though cultural awareness is more trendy now in the age of constant international connection (the internet), we're still more comfortable with the familiar. I see Disney making movies like Encanto as a way for them to acknowledge 1) their widespread influence as a media juggernaut (and subsequent foreign popularity) and 2) the immigrant and multicultural audience in the United States (Disney's home country) who goes without a lot of media that represents them. I think what we all tend to forget is that Disney the company is not one person. It's a ton of people working together, each with different opinions, desires, and political beliefs. Together they establish the goals of the company and work toward achieving those goals. One goal being "make as much money as possible," another goal to "be more multicultural." Some employees and CEOs care about certain goals more than others. In the end, we get a movie where kids from Colombia, as well as kids in other countries with families from Colombia get to see their own experiences and families on screen, sometimes for the first time ever. That's beautiful.

Encanto is good representation of Columbian culture. But you cannot argue that a lot cultures are not happy with their representations. Pocachontas and Princess and the Frog is racist coz they show false version of history. French and Romani (also known as Gypsies) found Hunchback of Notre Dame racist. It is far from original and Romani are shows as wild men who would kill innocent person. Can it be even called a movie for kids when it shows so much sexual perversion. China was offended with Mulan for her make up. Does she really have to look like geisha. It can give people wrong ideas about Chinese cultutre. Beauty and the Beast live action is just one big disaster. There is probably more. Hopefully next Disney films will be as good as Encanto

I appreciated this movie far more than I would since my grandparents were Colombian. They came to America for a better life decades ago. My grandparents always had such a massive bond and connection with our family. To the point that all my aunts and cousins would visit every Sunday to have dinner and talk about our week. After they both passed I realized how without them the glue that kind of kept our family together kind of cracked. We have no reason to visit each other each week as we all grew older. But watching this film reminded me of the times where I’d see all my family together. I think if they were still alive today they would of adored this film.

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Mirabel as a character. She is just so full of personality and life. She is genuinely the most relatable character from Disney in my eyes. Something about her is so genuine and charming. Its like seeing my younger, clumsy and dorky self on screen. Also, I love the fact that she actually looks her age (15) here and has a more realistic body type. Not to mention the glasses representation! Disney needs to make more down to earth characters like her. It was really refreshing to see someone like her (who very much reminds me of myself) on screen. Now I want to rewatch it again!

I would love to see a disability-based disney movie but with actual good representation. The couple time they’ve tried its just either been bad or not the focus of the movie. Like Nemo for example; he has a small fin-- great!! Oh he’s not even in his own movie much- boo. I loved the part with the one fish who had a messed up fin too and encouraged nemo, but that was about it for good representation. Luca was one film where the dad having no arm was absolutely brilliant and I loved that representation but, one again, he wasnt the main focus. I would love to see a movie where the main character has a disability and the effects of ableism are shown, and also show that having a disability is not all there is too a person, nor should it be something you pity. If disney did that that would make me so incredibly happy. Especially if they happend to be a Disney Princess!! It would show that not all of their princesses are flawless

I enjoyed the film. The only thing that bothered me is, when I first watched it, the musical numbers felt really forced. They were good songs it’s just it was kind of jarring sometimes when they’d start. Made me thing Her power was making people express themselves through song XD Also, Isabella looked weirdly Indian compared to everyone else, who was more Hispanic. Was super enforced for me during her musical number where she basically recreates the festival of colors (Basically a Hindu festival where you dance around in powder and it colors your clothes and body). Ignoring those minor things it was a really good movie.

It's honestly refreshing to see Disney making cultural films, given some of the company's scummier decisions. It's very true that the studio is a little yucky for profiting off of other groups, but Disney has a massive reach and the films have been pretty genuine in portraying the cultures in a positive light so far. I think the only real controversy with Encanto's production is that the producers didn't want Luisa to be so muscular, but the artists pushed for it and she ended up becoming the most popular character among kids. There's some more inclusivity for ya
@Punkini
@Punkini 2 жыл бұрын
Im just iffed by the fact that disney is hard pressed to milk “inclusivity” for money, while also refusing to touch “non acceptable” minorities. Or at least, theyll do a tiny, tasteless minority brownie-point thing (see: disney selling rainbow and pride shit at their parks while their CEO explicitly banned all LGBT content from their platform for not being “family friendly” despite showing hetero risqué scenes and graphic violence on their platform). As much as i love more diversity in media and cultures getting represented, i dont like that its from disney. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for cultures to be a marketing and publicity stunt. Im praying disney stays away from my culture lol

@@Punkini oh yeah, definitely. It'd be more appropriate for Disney to make these films if minority representation were a core part of their identity. But the whole "Disney's FIRST openly gay character" type of stuff with little follow through just highlights that Disney only cares about other groups when it makes a profit. Hopefully these stunts act as baby steps to Disney becoming genuinely inclusive, but for now it's just taking what we can get. Some positive representation is better than none at all.
