Very helpful video! I just used this to help me get Meta Alloy for Farseer. The date is 1/31/2021 so yes, site 3 works for sure even today. First time that far out, normally I hang within 100ly of Guuguyni, and I have to say the trip and gathering the resource did not disappoint. First time in an SRV and that was wild. Honestly exciting stuff. Got a little freaked out at the scavengers that were gathering up and following me though. Thank you for detailing how to use the Surface Scanner as well and recommending site 3 as that whole section of the video was very helpful. Great work.

Oh my word, thank you so much for this video! I could have bought meta-alloys at Darnielle’s Progress but I figured I paid for Horizons and flew all the darn way out here, I might as well have an adventure and mine some myself. Four or five hours later, following some online spreadsheet that swears there are ‘ripe’ barnacles at whatever location they specify, my cargo hold was still empty and I was almost ready to take the easy way out and buy them. Then I find this video today and finally find some ripe barnacles after a mere 20-30 minutes. Thanks so much, this saved me so much more wasted time.

The Barnacle Forest is at Barnacle Site 3. Go there for the scavenger experience. Then go to Barnacle Site 2 for the convenience. It's not like you can pick up more than two meta alloys at a time so a forest is only interesting if you don't want to relog.

This was timely as I finally decided to do all of the tech unlocks and so needed 32 of these. I found the highest concentration of the ones with the very large glowing flowers that contain the meta alloys right around the central barnacle and found that they respawn in the same place after every flop so what started out as super grindy went very very quickly after I figured that out. There are two around the central barnacle itself and another 3 around barnacles close by...probably more but once I found those, I didn't bother looking any further. Maybe I'll make a map if I'm feeling particularly ambitious one of these days.

The first time I went hunting for meta-alloys, I had gone hard into exploration and at the time hadn't realized I needed to install shelf space in the cargo hold to actually carry anything. My disappointed when I got back to the ship with the thing was immeasurable. Why couldn't I just leave it in the SRV hold?? Why didn't it go to the same hammer space as all the other materials I had picked up previously??

Thank you for the video! Pretty helpful! Sadly the Barnacle forest no more avaiable beacuse when dropping out of supercruise on approach to the planet, the game freezes, in both Horizons and Odyssey. They tried to fix the bug during the update 14.02 , unfortunately unsuccessfully. 01-02 still landable btw.

Hi there, I imagine that it is due to an update? But the Reciepe in the video does not match the one on Inara & the Elite Wiki pages. Which lists 16 Meta Alloys, 22 Radiation Baffles, etc. Just pointing this out, as I am currently sat in the Barnicle forest trying to work out how much I need? I'm gonna go with Inara, & 16... I seem to be getting a drop rate of around 4/5 Meta alloys, per flop myself. Cheers, been enjoying the Tutorials ;)

Their ships are made of meta alloys. The barnacles sap resources from the planet to produce meta alloys over time. They probably go there to repair.

That's been a theory for a long time and every time I've tested it I haven't gotten hyperdicted any more than usual. That said it's been a while since I've tested that so hard to say. As they are random and I've been grabbed many many times without them it would take many tests to get enough data to know.

I’m in that sector at the moment. Stupidly decided to take a look at a ‘non human signal’ (threat level 5) as I had never encountered one before and was curious. Lasted about 10 seconds before I got blown up by Thargoids 😂 Should’ve listened my gut saying ‘I got a bad feeling about this’...

@@alexh7140 It's rare. Look for the tusks with flowers on them. The meta alloys look like glowing watermelons, as seen in the video. Maybe try going to different forests / sites.

"Frontier flop"? (log out to main menu and back in) - I don't think there's any way other than very random chance.

Shot around 100 of those spikes and no Meta-Alloy dropped. Is this obsolete?

It isn't. It just takes awhile to drop. Don't bother shooting the spikes that aren't marked as a 'Biological Structure' as they won't drop anything. The spikes marked as Biological Structure look different too as they have little protrusions. Most of the time, just a mineral will drop but every once in awhile a larger, glowier 'Mining Fragment' will drop which contains 1 meta alloy...yeah...super grindy. Add in the fact that you can only carry two of these in your SRV before you have to offload to your ship and, well, it takes awhile.

Update: On further inspection, you can ignore all of the spikes except for the ones with the very large glowing flowers, those flowers contain the meta alloys. I found most of mine right around the central barnacle and could usually gather 2-3 per flop. I found it most efficient to gather 2 from around the central barnacle, go back to my ship to offload, flop, repeat.

I found the page of the "athena project", that contains arount 40 systems with barnacles, aren't them all valid sites to get meta alloys? Also, might be there are some general rules to find even more systems with such kind of Thargoid presence?

Yep this is the only place that has it guaranteed, I tried to purchase, tried to find them but they never spawned when I arrived.......but this place had them. It was a little buggy but you can still pick them up, I ONLY GOT THEM YESTERDAY. Stop pulling your hair out new players and head there.

How do I find those barnacles? I scanned 100% of the surface, flew around the planet, looked at my nav data, the contacts and the planet surface map, but I find nothing. Even the planet stats say: "Locations: none / Features: none" It is just a naked planet without anything I can target on it. edit: I even tried to go to those coordinates and I can't find anything!

@@lucakeenan5035 Yes. I heard the issues are knows and they are working on them, whatever that means. I haven't played many MMORPGs or MMOs in general, but my little experience tells me that is apparently quite normal. I remember day long outages in games like "World Of Tanks" or "Neverwinter Online". Honestly, I have zero interest in the multiplayer part of the game. If it were for me, it would be a regular, old-fashioned 100% offline single player game. All the forced multiplayer stuff does is to ruin prices for trades and the such. They could just have prices for commodities change randomly, slowly, instead of having this constant rush and bubble economy, where everything that makes good money gets immediately swarmed by tens of thousands of players, gobbling up all the demand. Making it single player would also be easier for the devs, because "balancing" wouldn't be much of an issue. I get that competing with human players can be more fun and more rewarding than fighting NPCs, but with games like this you always have the problem that there is a minority of power gamers with too much free time and obsessive tendencies who ruin the fun for the more casual or simply time strapped majority who can't compete with kids and weirdos who spend 8 hours or more in the game every day.

TrangleC yeah, I always play solo. This is my first time in an MMO, even if it is just solo mode. I spent so much time looking for barnacles last night unaware of this and wrecked my SRV in the process.

@@lucakeenan5035 Yeah, that was very frustrating. I really wonder what will happen on that front. I heard it supposedly was a bug and they will fix it (which they might be doing right now, because they just closed down the server again for 30 minutes, they say), but there seem to be big changes that can't just be bugs. For example, after the debacle with the Barnacle Forest, I decided to go farm for other engineering materials and I went to a system the tutorials recommend for valuable space junk, because there is a huge civil war in that system. I went there and it really was a crazy place yesterday. The whole system full of Conflict Zones, fleeing convoys and Mega Ships everywhere. Still, I did not find one of those signal sources where you can find the good space debris floating around. When I tried it again and came back today, the system suddenly is peaceful, normal and boring. No more war, no more chaos and Conflict Zones. Just a boring, regular system, like that planet is now a boring, unremarkable planet without the Barnacles. That doesn't look like a bug to me. That looks like they deliberately moved all the interesting stuff to new location, so people wouldn't flood the relevant places with their Fleet Carriers. If that is true, then people first need to find all that stuff again. That also explains why the Miners have to find new spots again. Seems like I once more, came into the game at a bad time.

I landed right on the Thargoid Barnacle site, and there are no barnacles at all. It is so hard to target spots on a planet, because they are not in the side menu list, and I keep dropping out of supercruise if I fly to close to the planet looking for them. I thought I would check the other Barnacle location, and destroyed my ship in landing. Turns out, the target was on the other side of the planet, so I came in way to fast. Learning. Then I spawn at the station 180 ly away. :( Edit: So after going back i did land on the opposite side of the planet the first time. Barnicales are THEREEEEEEEEEE! :P

Did you shoot the many many spires at the site? The targettable ones with flowers on them should have turned into a "mining fragment" that then when you pick up turns into a meta alloy. I think you're missing something as the site is huge.

How am I suppose to know about all of this without having to look for guides? It's pretty disappointing that it's kind of mandatory to spoil yourself using google to search for ways of keep progressing in this game. I love the work of the community, but isn't the game supposed to tell you how to progress in some way? I recevied the message from Felicity Farseer, then I arrived at Deciat. After that she asked me for meta alloys and there isn't a single way to know about what the actual fuck a meta alloy is. At least Felicity should've tell you rumours on how to get them, where to look for them, etc. Or a message telling you that something is happening in certain sector within the galaxy. Something to follow.

I guess with better (larger) community and with polished tools in-game. You can still use in-game codex that will show you some of the locations needed for some things. You just have to KNOW about them. I find these videos about the game as public diaries
