Nice job Mark! Footage looks pretty good. The non adjustable FOV is just a crazy limitation that they are making us deal with. My hope is that a firmware update might correct this oversight by Sony. Can't wait for your comparisons. Now get back to the editing!!!!!

Can these be mounted to the side of a helmet? The tripod screw location being on the bottom would imply camera is rotated 90 if pointing that mount towards the helmet, so that the camera is parallel to the ground rather than perpendicular.

I'm asking you loads of questions sorry! The timelapse function is disappointing. Do you know if the GoPro Hero 4 Black allows you to take timelapse photos using its 12mp camera? And do you reference this in any of your GoPro vids?

The GoPro uses full res photos for time lapse and after a update allows you to do the same "build the time lapse function". I reference it in this video on screen. The GoPro to timelapse shows the full photo timelapse ability. Others might have the same questions as you. Ask away :)

Great video, thanks for sharing. Been waiting for a quality review for this cam. Can't wait until it is available in Europe. Would be great to see some original 4K footage uploaded vs. the 1080p FHD on KZbin. Have you seen any quality difference in 4K 30fps 100mbit vs. 60mbit? Fyi for anyone who's interested: The X1000 uses the same battery type (NP-BX1) as the RX100 series cameras. Also, the xavc-s codec is shared across the newest generation of Sony cams (RX100M3, RX10, A7S, A7II). PS. The camera recording rate is always indicated in mbit - mega bit. The read/write speed of the microSDXC cards is always indicated in MB - mega byte. So the maximum 100mbit/s recording rate of the X1000 results in a maximum net data stream of around 12.5MB/s or 750MB/min plus a bit of overhead.

Mark, thanks for putting up the videos. I'm looking forward to the gopro comparison. I just ordered mine and waiting for it to come in. I also bought the 64GB sandisk extreme pro micro sd. I was very disappointed when I saw the issues you were having with high framerate and bitrate modes. Those were the biggest reasons I bought the cam. They are perfect for slowing down golf shots. And those high framerates in high resolution aren't available in the gopro. I really hope that it's a problem with just you cam and not with everyone. I guess I'll find out soon.

I believe there's a chance for a misunderstanding here: The high framerates (120p and 240p in North America, 100p and 200p in Europe) offered by the X1000 are meant to allow slow motion. They are not meant for 1:1 playback. Your screen and graphics cards are unlikely to be able to output and display 100+ frames per second. The best way to take advantage of the high frame rates is to import the movie file in a video editor of your your choice and to slow down the playback 4 times (100p/120p) or 8 times (200p/240p). The result is a smooth slo-mo played back at 25p (Europe) or 30p (North America). If you follow this method, you should not experience any issues regarding dropped frames, choppy playback, etc. I can't imagine this is related to the micro SDXC card referred to above.

Izzy Alsafa The micro sd card you were mentioning in your post is one of the fasted ones on the market today. I doubt the X1000 can get even to close to exploiting the write speeds as per the specs. I should not be a problem at. Please share your findings when you have experimented around a bit.

What is the platform and the gopro mount that you're using with the sony cam? I would like to use the same setup on my mountain bike.

The mount for the Phantom is this. It's okay. Doesn't have good directions and it's meant for a Phantom 1. I got mine to fit on the Phantom 2 but it's only held on with two screws on the back side. hi Mark,thanks for responding. I understand your problem I suppose the only way to correct it would be to edit and re-upload, which would not be ideal for a number of reasons. I just thoughtni would mention itmas im waiting for an x1000v to arrive and confusion over the correct card gave me a major headache until I discovered an article explaining the common misconception over camera rates and card rates. it must cause similar confusion to other people. I have the as100v by the way and have found all the mainstream cards ive tried work fine!

+Stuart Fillingham X1000 is just very particular. If you want to use the 4k or any of the 100Mbs modes we've found the required XC format class seems to a be a must. Anyway once you've had sometime with it, let me know how things worked out with the card you got so I can add it to the list for everyone.

I received my X1000V yesterday and plan to test it on my aircraft external mounts, maybe this Fri, Mar 13, and compare it to my AZ1. Due to vibration, the AZ1 had severe shake/jello with Steady Shot on, and could only use the 170 degree wide angle view. Hopefully, with the new improved Steady Shot, the X1000V will work better.

I did my first test with my new FDR-X1000V mounted externally on my aircraft. I wanted to see how the new Steady Shot worked compared to my AZ1. So I mounted it with a setting and location that previously caused shake/jello with the other cams. And to my surprise (was expecting the worst), the X1000V handled the vibration under full power with no shake/jello. So this new action cam does indeed handle vibration better (as was advertised to the drone crowd). There are a lot of settings to try with this action cam, and will be doing a lot more testing over the next few weeks, incl 4K.

You might need to use the new Action Cam software. I tested it with my 120fps footage and it worked. Haven't tested it yet with 240fps but I'll do a dedicated video when I have more info and examples.

ive ordered a sansisk extreme micro sdxc class 10 U3. hopefully this will work out ok. it is faster than I require but it came down to price and availability in the end. It a bit of a minefield these days with all the fake cards on offer, ive been caught out once or twice, even from major retailers. ill let you know how it works out.

Looks like I may have exceeded my computer's ability to process some of my X1000V footage. Did some 1080 120p at 100 bitrate and when trying to play the processed footage I just get stops and starts in the video as it plays. So can only see blips at a time. This is with Windows Media player. Did 60p at 100 before and it was fine.

MarkHawkCam I did use Action Cam Movie Creator (have to in order to capture GPS), but even it does not play it when it is still in the 120p format prior to saving. If I save it, then yes, it will play with Action Cam Creator and also with Windows Media Player. But on the save options, the highest is 60p. There is no 120p option. That is why it plays, I think. It cuts it down to 60p from 120. So what is the point of shooting in 120p?

i noticed with mine it was actually my computer not handling the load that the image puts it under, i used a mates PC with a NVidia GTX750TI issue solved instantly. that may also be your issue

I have some of beefiest specs most consumers can buy however I did start having luck re-rendering files out of Sony's Action Cam software. I'll talk more about it soon, just trying to figure out everything before I assume I know what's going on.

Steve Surgenor It's not like I am a stranger to working with high end footage. My day job is dealing VFX for movies and TV. Sometimes you come across issues that shouldn't be happening. Like why premiere assumes the footage is corrupt if it's just a playback issue. Premiere will make a lower res proxy video for you to work off and switch to the high res original when rendering. Here it won't even import it. That part I've yet to solve but I have ideas but I need Sony to get back to me.

I respect what you do, i appreciate it is alot of hard work, and I enjoy watching your videos, but, on one occasion that I know of you did claim that an advertised function of a camera was missing, which had I not known different would have made me buy a different camera, that's all I'm saying. Alot of people listen to your recommendations, you owe it to them to get it right first time all the time, or if you aren't sure, then make it clear you aren't sure, otherwise great videos and keep up the good work.

I appreciate the honest and constructive feedback. I know you understand it's a lot of keep up with multiple cameras throughout the year and it can always be better especially with help from the community. That's why I stopped doing Quicklooks when I first got the camera and decided to spend a day or two using the advertised features to see if they worked as I would have said they would. Just feedback from some of last year's videos. Anyway it's a fair constructive criticism and I appreciate it. :D Do you recall the camera or feature you mentioned? I'd want to make sure I've added an annotation with it's correction to the screen.

Sony posted the differences between the LVR1 and LVR2 remotes. The LVR2 remote offers access to a lot more settings. Do you know the difference between the previous live view remote and the new one. They look exactly the same and sonys web site doesn't have any specs that would show the difference. ALso, you mentioned that the GPS was in the live view remote. Are you sure that is correct? It does say you can use the remote to turn on the GPS but they may mean the GPS in the camera. I hope the GPS is still in the camera. Great video and really looking forward to your comparison to the Hero 4. Hope sony has a winner here.

I believe they are the same. In fact it's not even the newer one from the AZ1 which had built in GPS. So I can't use this with my AZ1 they way I'd hoped. Also another user pointed out the GPS is in the camera and not the remote. Only the AZ1 needed the remote for GPS data.

MarkHawkCam Thanks for clearing up the GPS not being in the remote. Very seriously considering upgrading from the AS100V but want to see the comparison to the Hero4. So far it looks like the 1000v has a better image than the as100v which was a little soft on details compared to the gopro... my only gripe on that camera.

hi nice video I like the style of you reviews. just one point that may confuse people (it confused me) you have presented the write speeds as MBs mega bytes per second. the figures should actually be Mbs mega bits per second. this is a common mistake but a very misleading one. like me many people will be trying to source cards that will write at 100MBs based on your review. they do exist but are extremely expensive. 100Mbs only equates to 12.5MBs so a much cheaper/slower card will do fine.

+Stuart Fillingham Yeah, unfortunetley it's a problem I can't fully correct the way I'd like. It was pointed out fairly fast after uploading these videos. If KZbin allowed I would have swapped out the videos with a new voice over and correct the graphics. However I am limited to adding on screen annotations that can only be shown on screen unless you're watching from a mobile version of the site. Anyway thanks for looking out :D That being said, we added a list of fully compatible cards (doesnt lock out or degrade performance in anyway) to the more information section below this video. The Sony cameras are very picky about their cards
