Thank you so much for this video!I actually managed to get such an alternative lense. And I didn't break anything 😀. I also fixed the new lense with teflon tape to get a constantly crisp picture.You really have to be aware using a new lense, since it may be a bit longer than the original one. After adjusting the focus, the housing could not be closed. But... there IS a solution. Just don't re-attach the battery/card door. This should give more room when inserting the cam into the housing. You may use some piece of flexible foam as battery door replacement to get the cam fixed in the housing very well.Also, there's some free space between the new lense and the housing, now. So, without the outdoor housing, I would use the cam only in dry and not too cold condition.And... the fisheye door of the standard outdoor housing is... CRAP. It makes the picture's edge quite blurry. That's why I recommend the updated housing version with the flat door, no matter whether you decide to exchange the lense or not.The final result speaks for itself. A reasonable viewing angle with almost no distortion, and a very crisp picture, even with standard HD. VERY NICE!

Dose changing the lens affect the Steady Shot? If steady shot still works with a new lens what would the angle of view be with the 5.4mm?

A lot of people rave over how much better the image quality is on this camera than GoPro, but every review I have seen pulls strait ProTune 4k footage from the GoPro, and the Sony footage looks like the camera has done some extra sharpening internally. I would love to see this with the 5.4mm side by side with the Gopro, both videos edited for best possible results. The Sony should look a little bit better, in theory, but I think the GoPro should be a lot closer than the reviews around KZbin imply. What do you guys think?
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
+Nick That would be a more elaborate test and we'll see about putting a comparison video together for it. It will be a ground shot and likely need to be on a tripod or hand carried. Keep checking back at our channel, November is a busy filming month for us, though our concentration is on the more popular GoPro of course.

I'm interested in seeing comparison between the stock lens and the 5.4mm. Especially in 4k. 😃
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
Sally Phnouk We will be comparing them after NAB later this month. As we mention in the video, the stock lens is terrible compared to the 5.4mm. The fisheye is worse than the GoPro Hero 4. Stay tuned.

I would love to do this modification and get rid of the lens distortion, but not at the expense of loosing the camera's weather sealing. I wonder, would Sony's hard lens protector (AKA-HLP1) fit on with that lens?
@PeauProductions8 жыл бұрын
We believe that lens protector provides the same protection as the waterproof housing, so any lens that works with the lens protector should also work with the waterproof housing. That means the best lens that will work with both would be the 8.25mm.

Hey guys. I was wondering if you were going to post any test footage for the 5.4mm lens in the Sony action cam?

+PeauProductions I would love to see samples on this camera. The higher bit rate makes me wonder how it will look side by side with the GoPro. My biggest letdown with the Sony is the fisheye lens. It is way over the top on this camera

+Nick November 2015 is filming month, should have lots of new examples coming soon.
you can make a comparison video with and with out the lens? do it fit in the casing?
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
You mean original lens compared to the 5.4mm non-fisheye? We will likely film something like that in the future. The stock lens is terrible, worse fisheye than the GoPro cameras. 4k output from this Sony camera to a 4k TV looks amazing with the 5.4mm lens. Almost all of the lenses we list on our site compatible with the Sony cameras will work in the waterproof housing, except for the 5.4mm we show in this video.

Hi, thanks for the video. The sense is a little too long but I guess we can deal with to get a crisp focus. I'm having a color issue with the new lens, everything seems pinkish. Any idea why?
@PeauProductions8 жыл бұрын
If everything is pink then you ordered the lens without the IR cut filter
@nickpedneault8 жыл бұрын
Not everything is pink. It's mostly when there are brighter lights. Can this be fixed or do I need to get a new one? What's the purpose of such a lens? Sorry for the newbie questions!
@PeauProductions8 жыл бұрын
Try it outside, any IR containing light, such as sunlight, will create an overly pink hue. It cannot be fixed without an IR cut filter, and the easiest solution is to simply send it back for an exchange. There are many uses for lenses without a filter, such as night vision using IR lights.

+PeauProductions Thanks for the reply. It would be good to get a lens that seals onto the body to give the same waterproof and dimensions as the standard camera :D
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
+Ian Davies Yes, but that would be something specifically built for a particular lens model and likely only come from Sony in the form of a new camera. The Sony cameras are not popular enough (vs the GoPro Hero) for a company like ours to produce a lens as you describe.
@zaqwsx288 жыл бұрын
Does it fit CCTV board lenses? I was thinking about buying the cam and installing 25mm lens with IR-filter.
@PeauProductions8 жыл бұрын
Yes the Sony action cameras use a standard m12 lens mount, though make sure you use one with a megapixel rating high enough to resolve the media resolutions you're shooting at.

This mod will be for non selfie shots, aerial and regular video shots, doing hand held selfies will give you a headache with narrow lens. i wonder how the steady shot looks with this mod since it already zoom its self, 5.5mm will be too zoomed on steady shot. i think a 3.6mm would be better for steady shot mode. BTW i have not seen any video on how you focus this the right way since you sell this lens and show how to change it, you should provide a proper video showing the right way to focus this like how many meters, or infinity, do you have a focus tool like a focus graph. subscribed nice video

how do you keep it from unfocusing? it looks like it would just turn
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын

@exodous029 жыл бұрын
+PeauProductions does installing this lens take away from the cameras splash proof properties?
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
+exodous02 Yes, changing the lens will allow the elements to enter the camera unless you seal it in a new way, or put it in the waterproof housing. The 5.4mm lens we show in this video does not allow the camera to fit in the waterproof housing.
@exodous029 жыл бұрын

@PeauProductions8 жыл бұрын
+femi ogunade We have not taken that camera apart and tested our lenses at this time but we believe it is the same design and the procedure is the same.
Why would you fiddle around, change the lense and loose guarantee when yoz can just use the case with the flatlense cap.
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
NicGaming Most people looking to modify the camera do not care about a warranty. What is the "flatlense cap" you mention?
@NicGaming9 жыл бұрын
PeauProductions I am talking about the AKA-DDX1. It does the same as you achieve with changing the lense, but you don't have to give up on the warranty nor have the risk to destroy the camera by making a mistake while changing the lense.
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
NicGaming Just like the waterproof housing on the GoPro Hero I doubt that AKA-DDX1 piece will remove the lens' barrel distortion. It likely performs the same function of being made of glass so it can go to lower depths and also being flat to properly focus when underwater.
@NicGaming9 жыл бұрын
PeauProductions I bet it removes the lense distorion ;) Look up testfootage or buy one yourself and you will see.
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
NicGaming I did just look up test footage but couldn't find any yet and showed out of water video to compare to. My guess though, is because it's the same flat glass cover that the GoPro Hero 4 waterproof cases have which does not remove the barrel distortion the Sony one will not provide the same function. If you find otherwise let us know.

You talk about "10 MP"... I thought you only change the lens, not the sensor?
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
+Constantin Mick Lenses in this size mount (m12) are rated with a sharpness megapixel value. So the lens needs to be capable of focusing on a pixel of a certain size based on the sensor size. So a 10MP lens is sharp enough to focus on the pixels in a 10MP sensor. This means that 4k video is sharp (8.4MP) but a 12MP may be slightly less sharp than a lens rated at higher MP.

@quinn67869 жыл бұрын
Or you could just turn steady shot on and it takes the distortion away....
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
Quinn Campbell If you use steadyshot you can only film in 1080p which will be using the center of the lens (so less distortion). By changing the lens to one that optically does not have distortion you can film in 4k without distortion.
@quinn67869 жыл бұрын
PeauProductions the 1080p still looks awesome . 4k is nice but i wont be using it much im gonna do 90% of my filming in 1080p to save space on memory and because i dont have a computer that can handling rendering 4k at the moment. Plus i wouldnt wanna tare my camera apart. Im interested in seeing footage from this lens to see why anyone would want to use it.
@PeauProductions9 жыл бұрын
Quinn Campbell You can see example footage of the 5.4mm lens installed in a GoPro on our KZbin channel here. Sony footage would be nearly identical. The procedure to open the Sony camera and swap lenses is super easy compared to the work involved on a GoPro.
