Quickplay Bots Makes Me Want to Stop Playing Marvel Rivals

I just found out about this earlier today, and then played several bot matches in a row. The game feels hollow when you know you're not fighting other people. I almost wish I didn't notice, because it is just draining to play matches against the bots. I get exited now when someone calls me a loser and iron man humps the back of my head, because at least they're real people :(

I went 41-0 with iron man only to realise the enemy team were bots. It's easy to check. Go to your match history and the enemy team is all on pc with all their "view careers" locked.

Honestly makes sense. Had a game where my entire team was confused with how easy it was and the nonsense they were doing , attempting to message them in game and just no response. I’d say just use bots when someone leaves the lobby and there’s a hole in the team then as soon as another person joins AND picks their hero, take the bot out

Bots are as a concept are not inherently bad. For example, you can choose between three difficulties for them in the practice vs AI mode. The higher-level ones are actually pretty challenging. If the game used those bots to fill in, I'd be okay with that. However, the bots in quickplay are either set to easy, or even lower than that and only ever appear when you lose a match or two, so they aren't there to supplement the gameplay, they exist purely to manipulate player psychology.

It's not STRICTLY psychology. It can make you a better player, too. Like grinding bots matches in melee. I just want transparency with it, either labelling them what they are, or only enabling them while you're learning the game like sub level 10 etc ​@@GideonsGaming

It's sad to see how well this tactic has worked on getting my friends to spend money in this game. Several of my friends who got into Marvel Rivals never liked shooters but since they love marvel they decided to try it out. Whenever I play QP with them we get stomped a few matches, then all of a sudden they start "Popping Off" and I always joke that we're playing bots because my friends are at their spawn door farming kills. These same friends have easily dropped $50+ on skins for heroes they thought they were good at only to go into ranked, get stomped in bronze/silver, then go back to QP because "it was always their teammates faults" in ranked. Glad to see I wasn't crazy in thinking there are actually bot lobbies and I agree this definitely hurts people from actually improving at the game. Great vid!

Here is my story. Used to play LoL, so the ranked elo hell, yes very real, very maddening, so I decided to play Quck Plays for fun in Rivals. All casual fun, 3, 4 matches and is all good. Do not need the addiction and stress with climbing because everyone else is doing it. I mean technically Quick plays do not matter that much so can goof around, be as bad as I want and all is good, but still play with actuall people so win or lose the challenge is still there. This is my first hero shooter (no Paladins, Overwatch, Apex, Fortnight, or Smite) so I decided to play quick plays untill level 23, to get a hand of the game in general not only the heroes themselves and not to "n00b around and be that guy that loses trhe matches all the time". Thinking I was getting "good" (every hero is kinda op so the hopes were high) went to ranked to get that black/golden Moon Knight free skin, and oh and behold. Cannot get out of Silver even with "op/easy" heroes like Moon Knight, Venom, Mantis, because I get destroyed, or I get a decent game, for everyone else to fail (bots in quick play are real, and so is loser queueas well. That is why all the "how to get to at least diamond elo" say that after 2,3 loses in a row wait it out couple of hours and then come back later )...leading to way more loses than wins either way. The season end in around 4 days, cannot exit the elo hell, perpetually stuck, thinking if cannot get out either way then why bother. The worst thing is the game is actually nice to play with every hero, the flanking, the fights, the excitement of getting closer when doing the deliver the spider/bast statue/thor goats from a to b; or the adrenaline when the enemy gets 99% in hold the point, only for a comeback to win the round. Thumbs up if you are in similar situation.

Wow, a lot of delusional people in the comments. It's not so much that there are bots in the game but that the game never tells you they're in QP and the devs are lying by ommiting that fact. It's scummy because it's gaslighting.

While not what I want... if I had to choose- I'd rather the game do "loser queues" where one team is given lower skilled players giving the opposing team a much higher chance of winning. Even if you're crushing the enemy team, or you're being crushed, at least they're actual people.

I'd much rather not waste the next 4-5 minutes of 6 other people's time by being so overwhelmingly better that they aren't allowed to play. If I wanted a one-sided victory, I'd directly play vs. AI, and for every game you get a one-sided victory, you're also vulnerable to being the "freebie," get spawncamped, and have your time wasted. At least this form of loser's queue doesn't harm 6 new-ish players and potentially convince them to not play again. I'd say this, while still not great, is better than trying to force a 50% winrate with unfair and unfun games. It'd be nice if there was a way to confirm 100% you're in a bot game and could leave without penalty, resetting your "pity."

I agree with everything you've said... except that playing competitive does fix the issue. If you're just playing for funsies, then you'll be much lower ranked than if you were going full sweat, so your games will be chill anyway. (This does NOT excuse the admittedly disgusting tactics of undercover bots)

And i agree with the premise that you dont need to take Ranked seriously.....If you dont mind being told to videogame yourself because your random team mate thinks he can go pro if people like you didnt hold them back. QP is meant to avoid that entire problem by giving people the option to play casually, and practice mode and PvAi meant to help you get better. With QP being filled with free wins, there is absolutely no place for the much desired "fun yet not sweaty" matches every real gamer wants to experience. Instead we are forced to play as well as we can with the Hero's we know best just to avoid a shameful bot win or play ranked. That's really not cool, and the bots should 100% be removed. Especially now that the proverbial cat is out the bag. If not then even the casual fan base will leave. No one likes being lied to or manipulated. That is exactly what's happening here.

The moment I realised the game put me up against bots after 2 losses the game lost so much of my drive to play. Now my casual quickplay matches became rage enducing sweat fests because I simply dont want to lose to be forced into a match that feels terrible and means nothing. There needs to be at least an opt out in the settings for this. Keep them if you have to but don't waste the time of people who want to play against people. I've also noticed no one has talled about this aspect of it but currently finding a forced bot match after some losses TAKES LONGER to find than a standard match against people. It's clearly here to just try and retain me after a loss. No other reason at the moment. Dead internet.

Yeah, there's some irony in the fact that these retention tactics have made me walk away from the game more than I would have without them. More than once I've lost a couple of matches and turned the game off because I didn't want to bother with the bots. I hate it, and I hate the possibility that this practice could become normalized in more games.

I like to play QP because I want to chill out. I'll heal as Luna and Mantis, and then I want to play Hela or Magik. Season 0 started off and it felt great, I felt like every game was balanced, there were no steamrolls, not really and you could talk to the enemy team. Lately it's felt like shit whether I win or lose. To people saying "erhhh its casual this is what you want" well when I'm matched against a stack of diamond players it's not really that casual is it. Then to have the game find me a bot game, where I watch my team kill everything like a bunch of lawn mowers (oh wow fun), before putting me back up against the Avengers where I have no hope of winning it's just shit. I play worse now than I do when season 0 launched, and every game has felt unsatisfying because I'm either being steamrolled, or steamrolling. There is no longer anything casual about quick play, it's full of sweats who want to flex (and flame their own team), or bots who get stuck pathfinding on convoy doors. Great video, thank you! I disbabled VC immediately as I got the game for several reasons. Later text chat cause some people are just too annoying and entitled even in quick play. It def has its downside, but if I cared enough about communication to win I'd just hop in with some friends in a discord call and do it that way. Most of the time though, I just wanna play some matches, focus on the game, and just rely on the ping system for communication.

When I started playing about a month ago with some buddies, I definitely had those "Are these enemies real?" moments. Even joking to my friends about the dead internet theory being real. Im pretty sure that the illusion will not clear for majority of the playerbase. Most people are just the average Joe, who will play quickmatch for a couple hours and not look too much into it.

I've seen people defend this because it makes kids feel good. That's not the purpose. It gets them to keep playing and spending parents money. It also gives people a false sense of accomplishment and ability instead of letting them improve on their own. It's manipulative and predetory. You aren't wrong, with such a massive player base, bots aren't needed at all, even to fill lobbies. That said, I'm not entirely against the idea of bots, heck in some games I want bots to fill out for a bigger match. (I remember being mad when Battlefront 2 was released, the old one not the newer ones, because the first game had bots and it didn't, so the battles felt smaller) However, I am very much against bots that exist purely to manipulate the psychology of people playing with free wins and stat padding.

It depends, quickplay bots play very, very badly. They do snap on to players, but they miss most of their attacks. So I'm not sure a bot would ever do well enough to be confused with a hacker, at least performance wise. However, they can definitely look like hackers in the killcams.

My gripe with quick play that also proives there are bots in quickplay is : When you want top play quickplay, sometimes you get to the game that has .... 60 seconds until the end, where you are 0 / 0 / 0 just started, all others are like 20 / 7/13 or something like that, and the game is basically over. Why? Why did you connect me to a game that is basically almost over. Furthermore, does that mean that they played a game 5 vs 6 all this time and NOW you a human get connected to the game? REALLY? In ranked if one does not reconnect in time, the match is over, and the disconnected one gets a ban for 15 minutes. So there it is if you needed more proof.

i get a weird glitch where i play extremely well and i NEVER EVER get players of similar skill to mine, it sounds like im talking myself up but it is a genuine thing I have noticed and it makes the game so insanely unfun because if i dont perform or play a high influence character I never get to win, so basically I can never have fun in the game and always have to try (i have a very competitive mindset)

I don't mind playing against bots. Even if though it is in fact a downgraded experience from playing with real players, even if it means I won't improve at the game, because most of the time I hop in just to kill time or just have mindless fun. And if I wanna test my skills then I can always just give ranked a go. So I guess this really depends on your perceptions of things, I can have more fun playing more competitively at times, I do try to experiment and gitgud at games, but I have to be in a particular mood to do that. I don't necesarilly feel personally insulted by the decision to queue me against bots, I'm aware i'm not not good at the game. Becoming more skilled just isnt hugh of my priority of things. Sure it would still be nice, but thats just never been the main enjoyment from videogames for me. That said, I understand I represent a minority in these kinds of games, and it still doesn't justify their decision to implement this. The fact that they try to obfuscate this feature is indeed gross and I hope it gets talked about more. They clearly are using this tactic to get people more hooked on the game and thus increase the chances of forking over money so I doubt they'd care about more honest business practices, but I think the honest approach is to simply queue against other players in a losing streak. And if it's absolutely necessary to fill out roles, then indicate that youre playing against a bot, but I doubt they'd do that. This is clearly working in their favor, and we're ultimateky talking about a publisher that excels at these kinds of business practices.

Oh, yeah. This was also a feature in IDV one of netease's games, similar to DBD. I also got annoyed by this feature on that game cause it's 1 v 4 hunter versus survivor game and I often played survivor so what happens is they made not only the hunter a bot but also my teammmates. I accepted it though and so did the rest of identity V players but I guess its a different story for hero shooters cause on average the game even with bots will have a longer duration, thus, wasting your time.

I swear there are bots in ranked and no one can tell me there not how do you go form having a great team getting over 25 kills even support to having a team only getting 8 kills and the tanks will be 2 12 with 5k damage and heals be 4k in plat 1. Also what you have to think about while you might be on a losing streak, what about the random people you're randomly joining with. Are they on a losing or winning streak? Once you considered this then you'll realize it doesn't matter rather you win or lose, every lobby has bots because they tried to be Overwatch and forced a healing mechanic no one wants to play with because none of the cool characters are healers.

Im a sweatlord OW veteran, my gf is casual Jeff mainer who never played hero shooter before and we cant play comp together because of our skill gap is way too big for now. We both agree that stomping bots in quickplay is a waste of time and they should remove it.

Can you comment on exactly how certain you are that its always 2v6 bots ? I had only felt like certain enemies were bots some times. But i was also only reaching this conclusion from watching killcams. Really good clips btw, theres like no arguing with those.

Nearly positive. When I started checking for bots I started to notice that two teammates always had similar naming conventions. Sure enough, they always had restricted profiles too, so I started checking them during replays too (The clip where Jeff the Shark moves back and forth after using his ult is actually a bot teammate I had) In every match replay I checked, it was always 2 and 6, never more than two bots on my time, and always 6 on the enemy team.

So first of all, after i saw this video i don't think the bots are the problem. The bot gameplay looked more like how you should play the game than the actual person playing here. I agree that they shouldn't keep them secret at all. But you can actually improve with these bots. They are moving targets, they shoot back, heal eachother and use abilities (even they are not really smart about it.) You can learn combos, the heroes and even read the abilities mid game against them. SURE you could choose to play against bots in the menu to do that, but as we see you choose to play against players even if you are on a losing streak. That mean not only you would have a bad time losing over and over, your mates would have a bad time too. And btw you could just ff the bot game to close it. I wonder anyway if the people in the bot team are just overperforming or on a losing streak too? You don't wanna get a handholding? so choose to improve yourself, especially the hela bot vs magick was atrocious. magick (the player if i am correct) missed 5 abilities and couldn't finish of a low hp bot. Tldr: I think the bots are not the problem, i think it's the players on a losing streak not wanna put a effort to improve. If you play casual, you can play casual with bots too without getting butthurt (like any other pve game out there.)

It's all about your mindset imo. You can view bots in quick play after a losing streak as a negative thing, sure, but I actually view it as a positive. Most people, even those with strong mentals, are negatively affected performance wise when they go on a losing streak. Giving them a bot match to practice their abilities and calm their mind. Sure, bots aren't going to teach you good positioning or how real players move, but positioning has always been a problem in games like this, and I don't think the bots are adding much to this problem. You also mentioned people quitting after going into comp thinking they were good. Regardless of the bots, people who first get the game are going to play against low skill players and going into comp and trying to climb is just them getting a reality check. I say this as someone currently Diamond 3 in this game who has a lot of experience playing Overwatch.

The game not telling you that you are playing against bots when you are is more than slightly frustrating. Especially when the whole reason I'm playing Quick Match is to get my skill up against real people so I can do better in competitive. I don't like having my time wasted.

@Screeling If you're trying to get better at comp, then queue comp and you won't even have to play against bots even if you go on a loss streak. Also, you're proving my point about it being a mindset thing. I don't know how a bot game every once in a while after a losing streak is "wasting your time" if no elo is involved and you're playing a gamemode specifically meant for casual play. With your mindset the bot game might be "a waste of time," but for me it would be a time to refocus and regroup. Sure, it'd be nice if they said you get bots after a losing streak in QP, but this is already common practice for their game studio and that's that, so make the best of it or just queue comp.

None was able to develope human like bot behaviour so far. Some of the playerbase even dont realise that they play against bots. These YT videos about that topic or reddit posts are proof enough that they reached a new level here. Cant remember that we had similiar discussions. The development skills of china is impressiv af.

I said this dozens of times to my friends. If you are in a PvP game with proper match making, you will win 50% of the time. Once you go higher, you start getting better players against you until you fall back to 50%. Personally, I'm not mature enough to lose 50% of the time. To me, that's not really fun. So I generally prefer PvE / Single player games. However, I'm totally cool playing games like this and RTS games like Age of Empires against computer for good ol' fashioned comp stomps. Winning more than 50% of the time is better, IMHO. I played one PvP game back in the day. I had pretty good matchmaking. However, it would burn me if I needed to get a few wins for the day (for the challenge) and I was on a 12 game losing streak. So, I kinda get why,in the more casual mode, they got their fingers on the scale. In order for players like me, who aren't mature, to have more than 50% wins and to handle some of the bad RNG streaks, someone has got to take the "L". They either feed me a guy who is really low in the ranks, or they set up some bots. As others have pointed out, the solution to your problem is to 'play casually' in ranked. I did this ALL the time in my older game. I took it easy, didn't push myself, and as a result, was stuck in silver league -- just the way I liked it :) No reason why someone who hates the idea of the gamemaster feeding you losses via bots can't just do that and remain casual about it. Interestingly enough, I DM for D&D/Pathfinder, and a lot of Dungeon Masters fudge dice rolls when players are having huge streaks of bad luck. They key is...never tell the players, lol!!!

Bots are not inranked. I thoroughly checked before making this video. I've lost an upwards of 6+ matches in a row and have never encountered a bot match in competitive mode.

the uphill battle in comp has nothing to do with not having bots. It has to do with the fact the only thing people play is DPS characters and refuse to switch when doing poorly. i do not see a real issue with bots in quick play. Fortnite does this exact same thing, it doesnt matter imo Quick Play is literally just about having fun and stomping a few bots after getting destroyed is fun then why does it matter. If you care about win integrity please play comp. and please play vanguard when you do.

I don't know why this is the game that makes it a big talking point when tons of f2p competitive games have bots. Pokemon unite has bots, fortnite has bots, league at lower levels have bots, smite has bots, even halo infinite had bots. I see the argument that it doesn't help you sure, but bots still aren't the only thing those players play. You're acting like you get bots back to back to back in a row, but that does not happen. Competitive also has bots too. If you see a healer and wonder why they keep going to the Frontline, they're bots. There are dps and tank bots too but mainly healers because everyone wants to play dps. Another key point to bot lobbies is some struggle to leave the spawn and have loading issues. So if you wonder why you keep feeling alone when you die, that's a reason. If you're wondering why that teammate hasn't pick a character yet or shows up at the beginning of match as server disconnected, bot lobby
