Personally I use shotgun with sharpshooter. Shoot into a group of zeds and half of them usually have missing limbs. Sharpshooter grants pierce to bullets, so every pellet in shotgun pierces through to the zeds behind your target

If followers did not have a tendency to get themselves killed because they randomly lose combat awareness and also have suicidal tendencies, ie they do not have any awareness of danger so they jump into a hoard without caring there are 3 Ferals and a Jug, enlisting followers means very likely getting into very bad situations because they will aggro and attack things in a way that gets you killed if you are not paying attention. They need to give us better follower AI and a command wheel to make taking followers on Dread-Nightmare worthwhile. As it stands you are just setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment. :(
