This really hit hard when this came out. Really tapped into the feelings of the youth back then. The reference to getting shot down referred to the Kent State Massacre that happened right when they started to record the album. Back then you could get pulled over for having long hair in some places. You have to look at the song in it's time, there was about 300-500 coffins a week coming back from Vietnam then.

The reason he became Dino Valenti was that he audictioned for a gig early on at a club owned by an Italian and he thought it would help him get the gig if he had an Italian name and I guess it stuck. You need to review the QMS Happy Trails album

QMS gettin' a bit hippy preachy! Musically QMS was in the same orbit as all the other Bay Area bands, so lots of cross-blending of ethnic and stylistic influences, but with solid musicianship. Still, not surprised the lyrics aren't JP's jam.
