Alright, first off, I couldn't help but laugh when I heard this was an internationally recognized sport. I'd call this one of the high epitomes of nerdom, but I can see that physical fitness is a bit of a requirement for this, good hand-eye coordination for throwing with one hand, coordination in general, and prompts girls and boys to work together to overcome social awkwardness, so I guess one could legitimately call it a sport. Also, I can't trash Harry Potter, I adored the books when I was a kid.

I came here because of TBBT and I had to see for myself if Quidditch really was a thing. And I must say it seems ridiculous to see people run around with broomsticks between their legs. First of all, why play some fantasy game? And even if you do, why play it on a broomstick? The Harry Potter version used broomsticks to fly, not to look like you had a giant, erect male organ with one hand on it. You could at least use a bicycle or a skateboard to play this game if you really need a vehicle to play.

The broomsticks serve two purposes. As a handicap, it is more likely to inhibit a good runner than a not-so-good runner, which means that the game remains fair even when a team has some less than stellar athletes. It is all about fun, after all. It also serves to mark a penalty: when a person is hit by a bludger, they must drop their broom, run to their team's goal, touch one of the goals, then run back and remount their broom. During this time, they are not allowed to touch any of the balls or otherwise interfere with the game. Being unmounted makes it easy for their team mates, the other team and the referees to see that the player is out of play. There are variations of quidditch that use unicycles and other means of transportation, but the international rules that have evolved require a broom. Oh, and the muggle version of the game is quidditch, lower case q; only the wizarding version is capitalized.

That's so weird, in soccer they have a world cup, but don't include universities...; The World Series only includes teams from the US and Canada but no high school or university teams...; World Wrestling Entertainment doesn't cover the whole world or wrestling... Weird. Of course, schools from other countries are encouraged to compete in the Quidditch World Cup (a sport that was founded at the university level after it appropriation from JK Rowling's wonderful books), but most do not have the money to make the trip.

Fangaroos - they would not because there's a rule that forbids the teams to have more than 4 people of the same gender in your team on the pitch, excluding the seeker. And I agree with the original author of the comment that it's great that it's mixgender, wouldn't really be quidditch otherwise!

They need to design a remote control snitch. That would be cool. I know they are making do with what they have, but a human snitch doesn't seem very challenging. The game is practically guaranteed to end a few minutes after they step on the field.

Some people may say "Why do you have to dribble it, can't you just hold it?", so I guess it's like that (Also it makes you only able to use one arm as the other is steadying the broom).

I'm a hardcore Harry Potter fan and i use to be interested in wanting to play "Muggle Quidditch". When i told my friends that they laughed at me and told i was a fool. I didn't listen to them and continued to pursue my dream. Wish i hadn't of done that. I posted posters all over the school about making a new Quidditch team and i only got 3 other people to join. It wasn't till our first game i started to dislike it. We were against another "Team" that was made up of some dorky kids. I felt embarrassed and once the game started i knew it was stupid. In the middle of the game i threw the broom across the field and went home. Seeing this video makes me want to beat them all up and take their money

I used to think the broomsticks just looked ridiculous and were kind of cringe worthy. But if you think about it, it's a handicap, just like how you have to dribble in basketball. It makes the game more challenging since it's harder to run while holding it and you have to make sure you don't drop it. It adds a whole new element that hasn't been seen in any sports game before.

+Charbel Merhej The seekers are just regular players. There isn't a tiny ball for them to catch. The snitch is a person. They come on to the pitch 30 minutes into the game and have a tennis ball attached to their waist. The seekers try to pull the tennis ball off the snitch. (Think flag football and pulling the flag off). The snitches are allowed to do anything and everything to keep from being caught. I've seen a snitch pull someone off their broom before. It's really funny.

Rutsy They did, but the US created the sport and has hundreds of teams whereas it's a fairly new sport to other nations so the few teams that could come weren't on the same competition level as the US teams.
