Quiet is a description… that car is quiet, the class room, the firearm with a silencer…. There’s a required relativity when using quiet to describe something. Quiet is to loud as silence is to noise. The absence of all noise is silence, not quiet.

My second husband and I went to Disney in Orlando for our honeymoon, and went to Cape Canaveral to see a shuttle launch. The launch was delayed but the next day at Disney there was this tremendous noise, seeming to come from everywhere. We turned to see the space shuttle rising over Space Mountain. 50 miles away, and still so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves shouting.

Dude I haven’t thought of my school mascots beyond high school probably since I was in elementary and middle school lol Ceri is constantly bringing this obscure and mundane school nostalgia. Recently it was 50 Nifty United States and now I get to remember the Providence Bears (elementary) and Bailey Bridge Bears (Middle) Bears are a slightly underrated mascot animal. Not many things are capable of being drawn as cute or threatening. Like you _can_ but I feel like culturally we all just accept the concept of a cute and cuddly bear moreso than a cute and cuddly tiger.

Now that can be a new TikTok. The moment I saw the cricket title all I think about is the domesticated cricket apocalypse that occurred and I'm still waiting for that episode. Have we had the episode about the cricket apocalypse yet? Basically the short version is 35 years ago we had a different species of cricket that was bred for as a feeder and used in lab work, then a weird virus that was spread by bearded dragons that infected and killed this species of cricket circled the globe before anyone knew what was happening and killed all of them off. It's so prevalent that if you try to raise this species of cricket in captivity again they just die. I was doing cricket studies in university when this occurred and our crickets were just totally acting nuts. We ended up having to cancel those experiments and dude entirely different set with other insects because something was clearly very wrong with our crickets. Today domesticated crickets are an entirely different species that are resistant to this disease, but they don't have the same level of nutrition as the original species that was used so crickets are no longer a good feeder option and should be avoided in favor of dubia roaches. The new species is also not quite as much fun for some of the old iconic behavior studies. The species of cricket was selected because it looks a lot like the original species rather than it actually being useful. Oh and did I mention the new ones are like obnoxiously loud because that's also a thing.

@@darcieclements4880 dam someone's sick lizard wiped an entire species of cricket off the face of the earth I think another thing they could touch on in a episode about Crickets and non-cricket things like them is that there used to be native north American locusts that were killed off by farmers the last specimen was collected in 1902 there was a whole locust species in America I still imagine a world were I could look about the window and see giant incects flying around outside its not common dream usually its a nightmare but along with petting a coconut crab seeing a swarm of giant incects is definitely on my bucket list then again I imagine with the whole global warming thing I imagine if the north American locusts were anything like there eastern Cousins I imagine they might end up being very terrifying once they stop having to deal with winter

Oh yeah that's that's a weird transition but just wait till you hit 40. I just did that and yeah it's a weird transition but maybe it's just extra weird for me because almost all of my friends are 5 to 15 years younger than me(and not aware of it) or 20 to 30 years older than me, lol. I've reached the conclusion that other humans my age just dropped off the face of the planet because I really don't actually meet that many people my age and I don't know why.

If sound has to travel through a medium would it have been quieter with less mediums to travel through (pre-atmosphere as an example) or after an atmosphere but before life really took off? I know sound wave intensity can factor on energy put in so an atmosphere that can slow incoming objects might have helped?

Yes we can be immensely more quiet in our oceans. Very large scale shipping are making extreme advancements but understandably the adoption rate has built in challenges. I watched a video using Electro-propulsion in salt water, that should in my opinion radically change the industry. I can't go looking for it right now

A lot of advancements in the work overall for cleaning up ocean vessels. The tricky part is convincing people to actually upgrade their equipment because some of the stuff that's out on the ocean is already decades old and people are reluctant to replace it with newer items because of cost. It's like tractors, you still have people doing tractors from the 1950s replacing parts and rebuilding the things for all eternity. Ideally this would mean you know government subsidies worldwide to help this transition, but then of course people always complain about spending unless it's for military.😢
