Күн бұрын

This was to be a 3 night 4 day getaway in the second week of March 2023 to just relax.
Torrential rain and thunderstorms had me cut the trip short by a day. It was the typical winter to springtime weather in Texas. Rain and thunderstorms with temperatures that swung from the mid 80's to lows in the 40's. It was the first time I used my Duplex tent in heavy storms and it did well.
I hiked in 5 miles, taking my time, it's hard for me to slow it down, and camped for 2 nights before hiking out on day 3 to avoid another forecasted round of heavy storms. I hope you enjoy Quiet Time, End Of Winter Texas Backpacking. #keeponmoving #texasbackpacking #nature

Tangent, this is what a hiking video should look like……no voices, few selfies, short graphics to identify conditions and plenty of nature scenes and sounds. Very well done.

Nothing like a good old fashioned thunderstorm (in the tent), as long as that lightning stays up high!

It was a great and needed experience with my Duplex. I’m watching your CT Gear Review Electronics video at the moment. This is some great information.

@Tangent Trails our Duplex and Triplex have held up great in the Rocky Mountain thunderstorms. Hail, wind and rain! We're hoping to bring our full size cameras this summer on Long trails, hoping. Huge weight penalty, but the photos are much better!

That was a nice relaxing trip. Dang you got into some thunder showers there too. Scary stuff hunkered down in a tent when those come through. Great trip. Have a nice day.

First time going through a heavy thunderstorm in a single wall tent. I could here the wind howling through the treetops. I was snug with a great wind block. Keep on moving!✌️

Funny you showed the decoy duck - I was out there a few weeks back and saw that wounded fellow too. Amazing how much it has greened up since I was there. Thanks for posting. Curious if you have thoughts / alternates to the rather steep ravine on the orange trail a few miles south of Valley View campsite. I traversed this in the rain and it was a tough transit due to footing. Wore this old man out.

Seems I’ve seen that same duck in another location but don’t remember where. Odd things seem to have the ability to wander around out there. lol. I know the ravine you speak of and I wondered how it would be in a high water stage. I’d probably check the map and take an alternate route.

That looks like a trail I’d like to explore. Where is it located and what trail is it? That also looks like the same weather we’ve been having in Abilene most of the week. Hope the duplex kept you high and dry. It seems like it would benefit you to just soak your shoes in tub the day before you leave on a hike. That way they might not search out so many puddles on trail. 😂 UPDATE: I saw the location.
@tangenttrails

The Duplex did well just a little backsplash and condensation but it was to be expected with how heavy it rained. It’s been a rainy February and March is starting off no different. Thanks for watching and keep on moving!✌️

Enjoyed it. Looks like you got plenty of rain. I ran down and did the Goodwater Loop during this same time and was able to stay high and dry. Glad your tent held up well. Its hard to beat DCF for a shelter. It really is the superior material. Especially in rain.

How was the Goodwater loop? Packed full of people?
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 Жыл бұрын
@TheAdventuresof Eli I went during the week. So I physically walked past over 100 people. BUT the vast majority of them were with a really large hiking group that had come to do the trail and were all bunched together. Had they not been there, I would have passed less than 10 or 15 people on trail. And the majority of them were in my last 2 miles near the Crockett Garden area. I went 4 or 5 mile stretches without seeing any other hikers.

@Ultralight Outdoors Yes, but it only rained heavy overnight. I was hoping to see how my Ultra pack would do in a heavy rain. Dang the luck.😄

Your area looks a lot like Indiana in the fall or springtime. Biggest differences being we have a lot more leaves on the ground even through the winter , and not as likely to be sitting around the fire w shorts and t-shirt.

Interesting.🤔 Yeah, the National Grasslands’ windy weather keeps the leaves scattered. The temps went from the low 80’s to the upper 40’s pretty quick when the front rolled through. Thanks for watching, Michael!✌️

When I was there in late Feb, forest service crews were doing controlled burns (section 28 when I was there). Several stopped by to let me know. Wasn't disruptive and they were very professional. Was down wind of my camp so no concerns other than needing to plan hikes around the area. Wonder if that info is posted anywhere (like it is for the Lone Star Hiking Trail areas). Would be good to have a heads up about their plans. Also there were teams of folks training hunting dogs which was pretty interesting. Didn't seem to affect trail/section access but I suspect it might.

If you’re on facebook you can go to U.S. Forest Service - National Forest and Grasslands in Texas page. It’s has lots of burn information from around Texas including LBJNG.
