I have two Honda EU2200's, regular and Companion, a Predator 2000 and a Generac 1200. There is no similarity in terms of build quality between them; the Honda's are far superior. I'm a blue collar guy, so I'm always on a budget, but I hate buying junk. I bought the Honda's for emergency home back-up, the Predator to use as a "loaner" (funny, when you own a generator, family expects you to be happy to lend it to them) and the little Generac to power a pitching machine. The conclusion I've come to after using all these is when you buy a cheap generator, you get a cheap generator; fact of life.

Then you came back to reality and realize that even the cheap clones like the predator will last for thousands or hours no problem. These cheap generators are pretty well tested and received by many people who buy them. When you can get a almost identical Yamaha clone for $340 vs a actual Yamaha for $1200+ it makes perfect sense as to what one to buy. You can buy 3 of the clones and still have money in your pocket. Sounds like your cheap gens are running just fine.

@@randybobandy9828 Then you got into a desperate situation where you had to rely on a cheap generator, and it failed on you because it wasn't built to the same quality and couldn't actually be trusted to deliver when you needed it most. There's a purchase price for dependability and reliability, and if you don't pay it... well, you might be happy to gamble, but many people are not.

incredible video. You actually ran the generators and took measurments. Other videos just has a guy standing there and talking to a silent generator, not rigorous like your videos. Thank you so much. Excellent video. I own the GP2200i and a Ryobi 2300 bluetooth .. just went though a 39+ hour continuous outage using the little Generac feeding a 75 foot 10-gauge cord to three 12-gauge cords through a 10-gauge splitter. It powered fridge and separate chest freezer, all electronics, modem-router, chargers, floor fan, house lighting and TV .. it also powered a small 900 watt induction hotplate and a tiny 600 watt microwave. We had big screen movie night with popcorn during the outage .. all done generator style. It was flawless using synthetic oil and just over 3 gallons of fuel for the entire 40 hours.

I love Honda mowers and generators. But in terms of how loud they are, I’ve found that among similar ones like you tested there just aren’t many real life implications with a 10-15 db difference. Even that very nice Honda would be loud enough to disturb other campers at a primitive state park campsite for instance. My Westinghouse 9500 runs 75-80db at light load, for example. And all of these tests WOULD be a light load for it. So just a bit louder but it’s a legit 9500 running watt generator. And the larger Hondas more comparable to my Westinghouse are quieter than the Westinghouse, making (to me) the volume of these small generators even less important. To me, I have two options: 1. Nice power banks / stations. I have several of these. They have come a very long way over the years and provide a lot more power and ah than folks think! 2. Buy the generator in the size and power you want with the features you want at the price you want. These inverter generators are all relatively quiet compared to their larger counterparts, and very, very loud when compared to a rechargeable/solar power station. :)

I agree power stations have come a long way and are a great alternative to gas generators but even the power stations have limitations unless the station is added on to. Thanks for the comment ..👍🏼😀

@@johnnysweekends agree. Funny how random things you’d never think of having so much draw will exceed whatever the equivalent to surge wattage is on them compared to fuel generators. Guess my main point is the technology is so good that most all are going to be similar enough that in real world applications likely not to notice. But that Honda…..😍

This was done well. Thank you. If you ever do repeat, would love to see some other generators to see how they perform (those Honda's are nice but very pricey). For me, I want something for going to the beach, or lake, or camping and plan to build an enclosure. I'm ridiculous. Have a fold out 120" movie screen, a portable projector, and battery powered speakers. Like to setup music videos on the beach or sometimes watch movies in the outdoors. Actual draw on power is minimal. Also, just comes in handy to power stuff wherever one may need it. Thanks again, its helping me be choosy.

Well done. It would be interesting to empty each generator, and then run it on a cup of gas at a fixed wattage to determine fuel consumption for each if you still have them. Rather than run time based on total fuel tank size, it would give us a better idea of run time using a fixed fuel amount.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, from what I ha e researched all are using the same size carb just different models except Honda we will just exclude those. But with all others running a 80cc engine I assume they should be more fuel efficient then the newer Honda at 121cc. Would be a good test for the Honda and maybe the Generac at 50 % load… 👍🏼👍🏼
@FakeGordonMahUng
@FakeGordonMahUng 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnnysweekends That's the interesting question to me since the carb, fuel flow rate and efficiency of the inverters are factors. People usually just read off official run time but that's based on the tank size. Most people's experience is a varying load or fixed load. It would be a good science experiment to run even if there is no difference.

Couldn’t stay away lol. Everyone has an addiction lol. If you have ever been in any type of construction field, equipment gets beat up, destroyed, abused, used till it burns up to all hell and more because your workers could give the slightest crap about your stuff. I see you have a special place in your heart for generators, and it’s cool, I like them myself but it’s nothing more then a piece of equipment to do a job. And I love to see how far things can go. That’s what people have done with engines for ever. We test to the edge and see what they can do. We are either impressed or disappointed in the result. Back when I raced different types of items what do you think we do as racers, test and tune to the edge and back of to where it will live. I keep thinking how much abuse can I throw at this Honda till it melts down…. As far as the info you have given me, don’t think I get it or don’t know some of it. Of course you wanna bigger unit if you are going to run higher loads. But all the research I have done people always buy the least. People buy what the budget can handle. I’m simple showing what a product does. And I will either be impressed or disappointed depending on the price of what the unit costs. I could care less about the abuse because for one thing I have found with my self and most things, if I break it, I’ll fix. Cheers

Yea common story. Sits for ever and fires right up. Told a friend a couple weeks ago to buy this Honda 2000 for sale. Some older lady was clearing stuff out. She couldn’t remember last time it was ran. She said maybe 3 to 5 years but it’s been a while. My budy said it took 5 pulls but fired up puffed a pinch of blue smoke and in about 10 secs ran smooth…😅 lol I could believe it. For the price I said just buy a new carb as long as you can pull it and has compression. All he did was a plug and fresh gas and oil change..👍🏼
@jmljml5065
@jmljml5065 3 жыл бұрын
I start mine every 6 months; that's when I empty and refill my gas cans. I always drain the carbs on both EU2200's, so it takes about 7 pulls each to start, but they run perfectly. I run them for 30 minutes total; 15 minutes under a 1000 watt load, the other 15 no load, ECO throttle always off. According to American Honda, exercising the generator helps carbon deposits to "free themselves" and be discharged through the exhaust.

Honda 2200 is the best, hands down. All will work for occasional use, but Honda is the workhorse. We use ours for power outages mostly in eco mode for freezers and fridge, lights, tv. You can’t beat that Honda in eco mode, absolutely silent till the compressor kicks on then revs right back down.

Well you can find the Hondas lightly used on FB market place and clist sometimes if you still want one. Plenty of dual fuel kits for them as well. As far as shipping to ca it seems they are enacting carb laws on generators only but not other small engine machines that may even use the same engine that is not carb compliant. So it’s tough right now for sure. And all the gens need to be so I think some are in transition to like fuel injection or dual fuel or just adding items to make them complaint in CA. The gen max line is really coming out with some great units and even more soon that will be carb legal for CA. What size gen are you looking for or need?

Honda 2200 is 121cc 18.3 amps and Honda 2000 is the 98cc around 16 amps. Bigger engines usually burn more fuel. And Honda has the most amps out their except the New Cummins Onan 2500 watt 98cc generator 20 amps. but not sure if the Cummins 2500 is proven for long gevity and durability yet time will tell. I have a Real Cummins 2500 Diesel the best and most proven engine in the business for long gevity and durability. Funny how a Cummins Onan with a basic Chinese engine calls its self a real Cummins!!! Big motors only use more fuel if you're comparing the same load. A large motor can be as fuel-efficient or more if you use it at 50-100% of its rated load. I'm talking watt-hours per gallon. If you just want low power stand by time then ya a smaller engine will last longer.

There can be a lot of variables there. Mainly the owner plays a big part. Maintaining is regularly, not over loading it and running it more in the 30-70% range can really make them last to there full potential. A small Honda gen lasts 3000-5000 hours then you normally get 50-75 % from the off brands. Some have had really good luck with the predator 2000 pulling over 2000 hours several times. And if your gen goes down and you can’t fix it then down time is money so at a lot less the off brands do have a place.

Sorry if I didn’t make it clear. The finals numbers were based on the 1500 watt load test. Which for the Honda 2200 it came in around 62 db because it didn’t have to rev up to full rpm. Verses the other gens were at higher rpm under the same load but running a higher Db. So over all the Honda came in the lowest with the two tests performed. But at max load for the rating of the generator you can see when all are at max rated they are all running about 72-73 db under this test. Even the large ones run almost the same. Hope this helps

@@johnnysweekends Thanks for that. Now I understand. One thing I have noticed about gen reviews on youtube is that it is not just about DB's it is also about the tone of the gen. Some have higher pitched grating tone and some a more deeper, throaty tone. I can't bear those with a high pitch tone. For this reason I have been leaning towards the new Yamaha EF2200ist, as the Honda appears to sound on your video a bit screechy, but then, the Yamaha has higher DB's. Do you have any advice? I am in Canada, and it is nearly impossible to find a dealer who will give you an A : B demo.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 3 жыл бұрын
Yes tone plays a factor especially in the mid and upper rpms. Like the generac it’s tingy up high. Most are but it is more so. When they are all up at max rpm the tone is pretty close with all except the Honda. Main reason is all the gens run a 80cc engine except Honda which has its gx121cc engine. Which that’s a big difference in power. Over all the Honda has a lower tone all the way through the exhaust note except wot… then it sounds more like the others but still a better tone in my opinion. Hard to beat that Honda 2200….only wish they made a 2500 in that size which is totally doable. Both the Yamaha and Honda are good units as I am wanting to test the new Yamaha soon. I have seen plenty complain and have issues with Honda. Even on the Honda web page on FB. The Yamaha clone engine is one of the best and most used out there. Most generators die when they are over loaded for to long and the inverter board fails and no more power comes out. The engines will run a long time but the electrical is normally what fails first. The Hondas really are great over all but owner plays a big part as well.

Would the Honda 2200i Bluetooth model be the quietest model out of all the Honda models? Or would you just use 12Volt batteries? Just wondered what your views would be on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you, regards

I would maybe look into a small 1000 watt Honda and maybe a power station set up/ batteries. Even add a solar panel. Of course all depends when you are doing this and also how much power you need. Honda will be the quietest no matter what but you would be surprised you can make any of them by making a sound box or just adding boards or a generator tent as well.

I think because it’s a long test and a lot of variables and I have neighbors so unless I do it while on a trip with two units running for 8-10 hrs then it’s not super practical. And most are very close in run times. And some are just stuck on what ever brand and how quiet it is. But if a unit runs 20 mins longer under same conditions that’s a lot of you are running for days or weeks at a time.

Can a portable generator power a whole house?
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you mean as there are alot of portable generators and a whole house. The answer is yes and no. Any generator can be hooked to a house but will only provide what that unit is rated for. So a 2000 watt generator will run say a 1500 watt hair dryer and that’s about it. Or it could run a fridge at 200 watts, all lights at 200 watts. Wifi at 75 watts, and more. This applies to all generators. You can only power so many items the generator is rated for. If you wanna run allot of items then get a bigger generator

ya what's kind of funny about your test, you are introducing a lot of noise with that heat gun and hair drier, so you aren't getting true loudness of the generator. All of your tests used the same added noise, so it they are all at an even disadvantage, but you are measure two audio sources during your tests and not just the generator itself.
@johnnysweekends

It would be nice if fuel was cheap and generators weren't expensive. You know I know the cheapest one on here is not expensive if you bought more than one. Maybe through a lot of people but a lot of people is a drop in the bucket. Why do I say that it would be nice to actually get figures on running parallel versus a bigger generator fuel-wise. But I know that a lot of the smaller generators you're not going to have the same plugs as a bigger generator. Is it better to have 2000 * 2 running parallel is it better to run 4,000 in a bigger generator. Because at the end of the day I know fuel is going to make a big point in all this. I bought two 100 gallon 18-wheeler tanks. So if I had them fully loaded full of fuel two smaller generators may be better than a bigger one as far as lasting longer. It's just like when it hits the fan I'm not trying to give an example towards you but are you going to grab your trailer if you can't get around with the trailer or are you going to grab a tent with a wood burning stove and a small generator and what little small things you need to survive on. with me working in the oil field in the past I know all about them big generators the ones you haul around on a trailer some of them that have a hundred gallon 200 gallon tank on them. Those would be absolutely ridiculous to have because there's no telling how much fuel you would burn in an hour just to run a microwave or any other thing to charge batteries. There's no doubt in my mind there's nothing wrong with solar there's nothing wrong with the solar generator but you cannot go without a generator. Nothing can beat a generator on a cloudy day. There's just so many variables. I know what the best thing is is a person that has hands-on experience. Because I know you you could do the math and figure out how much solar you're going to be drawing on what you use. At the most if I ran something solar that I would probably run 24 hours a day is maybe a deep freeze if I had things Frozen or needed to keep things Frozen. I know these variables will come into existence real soon. But I think them solar generators are probably the best investment than a generator then solar. I know you still need but you don't have to worry so much about how much wattage did you need to make that wattage. If this comment didn't come in so good it's because I'm sitting here talking into my phone. Talking about some of these generators is like talking about a cell phone. You buy a cheap cell phone sometimes you get benefits that you don't get if you buy any expensive cell phone. And then vice versa. But running parallel and getting $3,600 Watts versus a generator that produces 3600 Watts on its own it may be more economical for too small running parallel. Those bigger generators got a bigger fuel tank. What were witnessing right now in society is toppling turn away from God and God will be your enemy. The same outcome when somebody receives the holy Spirit and they turn back into a life of sin. I just figured I'd give you a heads up there. The rug is slowly but surely getting ready to be pulled out from underneath.

@randybobandy9828 Жыл бұрын
2 small 2000w gens are better than 1 4000w gen IF you are planning to run under 2000w loads most of the time. If you plan on doing more than 2000w loads the 4000w becomes more fuel efficient. The plugs won't be any better on a 4000w vs 2 2000w because no 4000w inverter generators have 240v. When you add the parallel kit to the 2 2000w generators, you get a the same 30a 120v twist lock plug that's on the 4000w gens. Imo the best thing when it comes to fuel efficiency is to have a solar generator(aka a large lithium battery with a solar charger) I built my own that has 2 5000wh batteries(10,000wh total) with a 2000w inverter. It can connect up to 600w solar. I used a nice Milwaukee waterproof pack-out case to build my solar generator in. So if I needed to run off grid when SHTF I would use my 10,000wh battery that would be slowly charging with solar but if it got below 15% I would fire up the generator to charge it as well as run my devices while it's charging. That way I'm not running a generator at all times and it will save me fuel because I will be using my generator at close to full load to charge which is where a generator is most efficient(50%-100% is where a generator is most efficient). 10,000wh will last a few days as long as you're not running a air-conditioner or electric heater(which is silly to run electric heat off grid). Charging it will take a good 10hours or so but that's OK because you can use the generator as well to charge and run your camp.
