Left - Right is the economic axis, Conservative - Liberal is the social axis. So a left conservative would be a communist, a left liberal would be a progressive, a right liberal would be a libertarian and a right conservative would be a fascist. Roughly speaking in extremes, that is.

What defines 'left' and 'right' as well as 'conservative' or 'liberal' are quite a bit subjective to both era and country. The word 'liberal' in the US for example was used in fact to describe people believing in more economic freedom until the 1950s. Then there was a grand realignment of parties and labels between the 50s and 80s here until Reagan, when republican pundits imposed a new definition of 'liberal' in the media for propaganda purposes that since stuck. On the other hand, the word 'liberal' in, for example former Eastern Bloc countries still carries the older notion of economic freedom. Curiously though, in Europe 'liberal' is associated with social freedom as well, just like in the US. Other contrast on definitions include the historic French revolutionary government, labeled 'extreme left' due to its extreme government control and ultra-nationalism, while the German Third Reich is labeled as 'extreme right' for the same features... The point is: if your argument is based on labels such as 'liberal' or 'conservative' you may not have an argument...

I just wonder when he'll realize that for many of those votes (since I assume he doesn't need a super-majority) he didn't need to pressure everyone as hard as he did, especially since one party is basically always in favor of what he wants, the party that was generally opposed only had about equal membership, so all he needs is more than a bit of neutral from the middle party and he probably shouldn't influence them so soon since he can influence them later on after the parties might have already taken a few good whacks.

The left vs right axis was a bit confusing for me as well. But I think the issue is that it is with respect to an monarchic empire reaching towards democracy. While we are used to think of it with resspect to an established demoacracy. So I don't think it is 'inverted' but more like a huge shift to the right (I think?) happened. What they think is 'right' is 'left' from our view.
@IngoNikot8 жыл бұрын
left/right in this game is about economics (left=more state influence in economics) liberal/conservative is about personal freedom (conservative=more state influence against civil rights) (examples for the corners:) left liberal: personal freedoms, but restricted economy right liberal: classical liberal with personal freedoms and free economy left conservative: udssr right conservative: like the german empire in and before the first world war, free economy but restrictions to personal freedom if you live in the us you are used to the mixed up system were liberal=left. i assume the reason for that is that they have a two party system. in my country these are seperated into muliple partys (our liberals are pro private gun ownership, our left and right party are pro state)

@quill18 you're having a crappy economy because you raised taxes too much. The citizens get paid and then they get taxed. They shop with what they have left, and if there isn't enough left, commercial and industrial (your major sources of income) suffer. High taxes also reduce the number of people willing to move into the city, which does not help with your money issue.

Well, it's more 19th century politics, Quill. Laissez tend to be more liberal thing when in a time when traditional usually represent aristocracy. Though Britain might be those since free trade tend to be rival with more conservative members, like Corn Laws.

Two axis political chart symbolises the party's economic and social issues stance. X axis in this case is a classical socialist-laissez faire contrast, while the Y axis goes from authoritarian to liberal in such issues as drugs, abortion same-sex marriage etc. Such chart is more in-depth than classical left and right divide because it helps to mark various nuances. Don't listen to all these people telling you that left/right were inverted in the past, also left and right means exactly the same thing in all countries.

They should probably have named the left-right axis the "authoritarian-libertarian" axis instead, if they want to use the US parlance. Especially since most Americans think of the conservative-liberal spectrum when the terms left and right is used, and since conservative-liberal is already on the compass in-game it would seem silly and redundant and confusing at first glance.
@AMP09FH8 жыл бұрын
it's the early 1820s. "liberals" (i.e. classical liberals) were considered left-wing for most of the 19th century. conservatives were generally anti-capitalism, anti-free trade etc., viewing them as dangerous and destabilizing to the old social and political orders, and so were right wing. when social liberals (the current American "liberals") came around, they took the left, while conservatives became associated with classical liberalism. classical liberalism is also strongly associated with right libertarians (left libertarians are "libertarian socialists").
@Alomoes8 жыл бұрын
I think it would be fair to replace conservative with authoritarian, and liberal with libertarian. Anyways, in 19th century Europe, there was a divide between the old style conservatives, who wanted more power to the king and believed in government's power to keep order, and the liberals, who wanted free markets and laissez-faire. I am pretty sure that is what the alignment system means.
