I think London should have more farms and less cottages IF the intention is to run scientists. There are a lot of cottages but they are not being worked. Also if cottages were the main focus it would be beneficial to settle the other cities closer and work the cottages to have them grow. Great series though👍👍👍

I've been watching your channel since before civ 5 came out! Love how in civ 4 you aren't punished for building a bunch of cities, and the AI isn't hampered by game mechanics. The way religion works is better than the current games too imo. The best civ game. Anyways glad youre doing this series

Apart from graphics and even that is debatable since realistic graphics don't stand the test of time there's been only regress in gaming.

If you love civ IV, then try out the Fall from heaven II mod. It is just awesome.

How do you get spies so early? I thought CUA was required, very late game. Or is it from a mod?

That will be One of the expansions which changed the espionage System I believe.

CIV 4 feels like empire management. Civs 5 and 6 feel so damn small, like village idiots fighting.

What a ridiculous comment. Civ 4 is the pinnacle of this series' powercreep. Civ IV's entire ethos = SPAM, SPAM, SPAM; more cities, more units, more doomstacks. As much as I like watching Quill, this let's play makes me realize I've seen so many of his IV playthroughs where he does the exact same thing: expand, crank science to zero, and spam units to take cities. Sulla, to his credit, at least has done some different novelty playthroughs, but otherwise Civ IV's mechanics make playing in a non-intuitive way far too optimal, not to mention its BS RNG-heavy trash combat (multiple 60% back-to-back losses lmao). Civs 5 and 6 are designed from the ground up to get away from the spam mechanics and power creep. You absolutely can have large sprawling empires in both games but expansion needs to be balanced. 5 was a little more heavy handed in this regard with global happiness but 6 found a good balance between wide and tall play.

@@MikaelLevoniemiif you're talking about 1UPT then all I can tell you is: less is more. More units =/= more better. Civ 4's excesses are the exact reason Civs 5 and 6 went with 1UPT.

@@therexbellator Yes and that's exactly why CIV 5 and 6 don't feel like civilization games anymore. They are strategy games for sure, but between villages. I actually want my armies and navies on a huge map.

@@MikaelLevoniemi Meh. I'm not gonna dog on Civ IV too much because as a long time Civ player I go back and play all the civs when I need a change of pace even IV. But in my humblest of opinions, you overstate the grandiosity of Civ IV's doomstacks. Less is more and an army of a two dozen 1UPT units can be just as powerful and epic as one of four dozen units. It's not a coincidence then that Civ 5 got away from the spam and RNG of Civ IV. You should try playing Humankind, if you like armies, you might enjoy the battle system in that.

I'll never understand how Quill says this is his favorite Civ / game of all time. Nostalgia is a helluva drug. This game's ridiculous RNG dice rolls for combat and the need to roll stacks and stacks of units to take a single city are an exercise in eye-rolling tedium. Even Civ III's dice roll combat didn't seem as spastic and inconsistent as this game's horseshit. At least a stack of swordsmen in Civ III have a good chance of taking a city guarded by spearman, but in IV you'll lose half your army and still not have the city, which is to say nothing about the ridiculous suicide-artillery mechanic, which itself incentives more and more spam. Even watching this playthrough I feel like I've seen Quill do this exact same thing in other let's plays. This is the ugly truth Civ IV truthers don't want to accept: this game is just mechanically inconsistent and rewards gameplay that isn't even in line with how the developers intended you to play.
