I recently drove to Quilpie with my partner and I can honestly say that it was one of the most disappointing trips of my life. First, the highways were littered with rubbish and carcasses of dead kangaroos, sometimes three or four lying dead next to each other. All three campgrounds we stopped at had been vandalized: the ground was littered with broken glass. And when we finally got to Quilpie, which is nothing more than an ugly dusty village, we got a room in a wooden shack for the price of a small hotel in Paris. The whole outback has been stripped of vegetation, the wildlife has all but disappeared, and most land is in private hands. In the middle of nowhere all there is to see is barbwire and skinny cows munching on shrubs. I wonder how this country would have looked like today if it had been colonized by Scandinavians or Japanese.
