Whether you decided to make placemats or a quilt using this method, they both are adorable.
Teal and Gray Log Cabin quilt- • Quilt as you sew Log C...
Placemats:
Measurements and quantity for one placemat. I used my scraps so don't have a measurement for fabric used. Each placemat has 30 blue squares and 28 red squares. You could change these colors out to any color combinations you like. Teals/blues, teals/turquoise/grays, red/green, fall colors, etc. There are eight HSTs, two in blue/white and six in red/white. There are four white squares. The white could also be swapped out for beige, cream or off white and done scrappy if desired. Squares are 10 across and 7 rows. I think backing and binding fabric was two yards but not certain.
Thirty 2-1/2"squares (blue) of desired pattern and colored fabrics. (Color A)
Twenty eight 2-1/2" squares (red) of a complimentary pattern and colored fabrics. (Color B)
Four white 2-1/2" squares.
Three 4-1/2" squares of white fabric to use to make six 2-1/2" half square triangles in Color B, (red) and two half square triangles in Color A, (blue)
Two 4-1/2" squares in color B, (red) for the six half square triangles. You'll have two HSTs left.
One 4-1/2" square in color A, (blue) for the two half square triangles. You'll have two HSTs left.
Backing and batting 14 x 21 inches or measurement of unsewn strips layed out.
Binding in 2-1/2" wide strips. I don't know how long I made it but I had a lot left over.
