I love this tutorial - fantastic. One extra tip - when you sew on a button if you always take one stitch in the fabric/project before you go through the holes in the button it keeps it a lot more secure. And then when you finish going through the holes, wrap the thread around the back of the button about 7 times to make a bit of a shank. That will raise up the button a smidge so it closes more easily.

As a suggestion: Using a shank button will work a bit better as it'll have room for the elastic to sit. It'll also be less wear on the thread. :)

Hi, you may want to try and re-wind your bobbin. Also check the tennis on the bobbin. Hold the bobbin by the thread, and if it free falls, it's too loose. If it doesn't fall at all, it's too tight. Adjust the small screw just 1/8 turn and adjust it until it falls at a nice gradual rate.

I'm thinking about making a cover for a sketchbook with a spiral binding. I like your concept, I just wonder if I need to do anything different because of the wire spiral. I generally use Strathmore Sketch books if that helps you know what I'm talking about. :)
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Danielle, I think you could use the same overall concept, just make sure to measure around the whole book and include a bit extra for the spiral so there is plenty of room for it.

Erica, I was a little confused with your instructions on this notebook. When measuring you said to add an 1 inch to each Direction but what you posted on the screen you have actually added 2 inches when you measured around The Notebook. I made your patchwork composition cover and followed it exactly and still had to trim down slivers of the top and the bottom of the cardboard cover to get it to slip into the pockets. No problem but I am getting ready to use this pattern to make a quilted cover for a spiral-bound notebook which actual measurements are 11 in vertically and 19 in around so I'm not sure how much I need to add for the same allowance and also an eighth of an inch top Stitch
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I apologize for any confusion! Go for the measurements that I put in the written inserts of the video. I think I decided as I was filming that it was better to leave it a bit larger to give yourself extra room.

I had a lot of trouble stitching the binding to the front. It just looks really bad on the other side. I had a hard time keeping it....like, idk how to describe it...when I pull the binding over, I had a hard time keeping it even....Then I tried hand stitching and that was....stressful! Lol Any tips? 🤪 Thank you! I know my question is a bit obnoxious but I really want it to work for me!
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean it looks bad on the inside of the cover? I just try to stitch as closely to the edge of the binding on the front of the book cover as I can. Maybe slow down so you can control how straight your stitching along the binding edge? You might also find this video more helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2LZenaQm56Sj9U

This is sooo cute! I want to make this for my son's hardback bible. I wanted to add handles and I think it would work to put them in between the quilting and the flap pieces? Or make them long to go all the way across the quilted part. What do you think would be best?
@JenniferWoellert
@JenniferWoellert 7 жыл бұрын
Well, now I'm watching the binding part... I don't the no putting the handles between the layers would work now 😬
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 7 жыл бұрын
Well, you would want to add the "handles" in the same manner that I added the button elastic. Just place them between the outside of the cover and the binding. They will have to fold back towards the opening to hold it. You could also just wrap the handles around the outside of the cover looping them on both ends where the book opens. And then stitch them right on the outside of the bag to hold them in place. Sorry that might be hard to describe in a comment :)

@carolg.6838

Many years later I am reading your question...I bet you could do the quilting first Then add the strap...one long piece of strap with one raw edge at the outside middle back. Going towards the top, pin it, make the handle loop, pin going to the other side forming the handle and meeting the raw edge. The straps would be spaced how you want. Then sew both sides of each strap (not the handles) but leave about 2"? free/unsewn before the edge of the top and sew a square with an x at that point on the strap for reinforcement. If you are unable to tuck under the raw edge, you could sew a small rectangle of fabric over it of a coordinating fabric. Then place your end pieces and sew the binding keeping the handles out of the way, maybe pin them towards the center. I think I would like a closure if carrying it this way. My mom made me a book cover with handles for a bird watching book. She sewed in a small pocket in which she placed a quarter in case I needed to make a phone call...that was over 20 years ago.

I am making the 2nd of two of her projects. I never noticed she talks faster than we do in Chicago, probably because I was making something. But her instructions are clear and if you slide to the left the red dot to go back, usually you can see pictures where to stop. I am a little worried about the tip to bottom measurement as I might sew the binding over the pocket a little more than half an inch. I might not cut the bottom edge until I see how that goes. My binder measures slightly different.

This is so cute! I have been watching your channel for a while now, and I really want to learn to sew. I have Cerebral Palsy though, and I can't walk, and my fine motor skills are somewhat effected. I can't use a foot pedal, so I thought about maybe putting the foot pedal on the table, and pressing it with my hand, but then I won't have both hands free to guide whatever I'm sewing. Do you know if there is anything sewing machines out there that don't use a foot pedal?
