This would also be excellent to make a rag quilt. Use large square to cut front and back and inner square to cut batting or flannel. Sew a 'X' across the sandwich only where the batting or flannel is, then sew the outer material together to form a seam, all on one side or the other, then snip the seams close to the sewing line. Wash several times and you have a rag quilt.

I couldn't tell if it was our phone or yours ringing! Love these directions as they seem so much easier for doing large quilts! None of the extra cutting of the different sashing front and back pieces and then the binding on top of it. I have arthritis everywhere and and doing some of that just about kills my shoulders.

1) Does the wider quilting lead to the batting pulling and slipping in the big channels after a few washes? (Obviously I've dealt with this problem, but it was actually a purchased quilt, not one I'd made.) 2) Why backstitch when the edges are going to be bound when you attach the blocks and do the final binding? Thank you for sharing these because even though I can't afford that extra tool right now, it's certainly going on my future buy list!

Hi Katie, thanks for watching my video! 1) the batting should not be affected whatsoever when washed. The stitching is about 2” apart. That’s plenty to stabilize the batting. 2) I’m a rule follower and the instructions say so 😂😂. I haven’t experimented not back stitching so I don’t have a good answer for you. 😆 Guess I’ll be experimenting later today!

As long as your batting is 2 inches smaller than your backing, you can make the finished block any size. So cut backing 12.5 inches and batting 10.5 inches.
