Aside from a quilt I made in the 1970s, I've had no quilting experience until about two years ago. I stumbled across an excellent video on making a rag quilt. I thought, "I can do this!" and proceeded to make a lap quilt for my young granddaughter. Since then, I've joined a quilting group at my church (we make quilts for those in need) and am now doing "regular" quilting. Recently, I made a 60"x60" quilt top, and using my quilt top, I chose a thicker batting than usual, plus the backing, and I quilted it. Oh, my goodness! This was an agonizing endeavor, and I realized that such future quilts will have to be quilted by someone else. The arthritic pain in my hands is just too great to do this on my machine. So, I reasoned, I also need another means of quilting-as- go than just rag quilts. HAPPILY, I stumbled across your video. I just completed a four-block sample following your directions, and it turned out beautifully! I'm going to use this technique to make a larger throw for my adult grandson's birthday present. I'm so excited about doing this project. Thank you for sharing your method with us!

Hi, Darlene: I just found your channel today. You are absolutely charming and I love your enthusiasm and attitude, especially about things not having to be perfect. I also admire that you are taking care of your mother and that you let her know how much you love and cherish her by making her a beautiful and special quilt for her 94th birthday ( I watched that video earlier). Letting her pick the fabrics and then finding a way to work the lace into the quilt was also a loving gesture - you are a wonderful daughter. I lost my mom to Alzheimer's 5 years ago. She taught me to sew when I was very young on an old Singer treadle machine, which I still have and which still works! I miss her everyday - I would welcome the chance to sew something special for her. May life's richest blessings be yours always.

I'm so glad I found this! Thanks for the info. I used your method to make a 3 block by 4 block hanging quilt for my sister's bday. I put a small group of photos and quotes in each block, using any stitch I wanted, then put it together. A labor of love, but I'm loving the result - thanks, again!

A couple of years ago I saw this and was inspired enough to start of quilt for a friend...but never finished. Since then I have recently watched about a dozen other QAYG videos, got inspired again, and returned to your video. Your method is, by far, the quickest and easiest. (Most of the others require cutting of narrow batting strips, sashing strips, and backing strips to join the rows. That is a whole lot more work, and for what?) Thank you, Darlene.

T.Y. for a good common sense approach to the QAYG projects. I've been researching QAYG for several years and this is the first one that makes it easier and skips "hand-sewing". Keep these ideas coming, I'm an avid fan now.

Darlene, Thankx so much for this tutorial! I now know how to finish a quilt top I made over a year ago. I do the 'scrappy/crazy' quilting and wasn't sure how to put them together without the 'busy-ness' that would occur with simply attaching them to each other. Your method will be PERFECT! Thank U again. As well - your 'u-r-perfect-no-matter'...such a lovely, ACCEPTING approach to ANYTHING, in life! Danielle

I love your video. Very easy to follow and understand. You mentioned rag quilts. I make rag quilts all the time. When I make one, I do the snipping as I go along. It's so much easier if you snip each row when you add it to the previous row. Then, when you're finished, all that's left to snip is around the edge. Done. :D

I tried to add a comment and it disappeared because the next video started up, GAH! I love your videos. You have such a relaxed style and your creativity flows. I wish I could add a picture of the project I want to quilt as I go. I drew pictures of kitty cats with fabric pens and added crazy quilt around the borders and ended up with 22 by 22 inch squares. I want to do free style quilting around each kitty cat so the quilt as you go quilting will work the best. Thank you for being such an inspiring teacher. I am going to be very busy because this is going to be made to fit my king size bed. I am a crazy cat lady and this quilt will express my love for cats and crazy.

This is amazing! I tried a quilt similar to this years ago and it was so hard. I have never made another but a friend from church whose wife died gave me her sewing stuff. She had lots of material cut into squares that I have wanted to do something with. This is it! And I'm going to use your idea of no batting so it will be lightweight. Thanks.

I am still a perfectionist but also determined to get projects done. So I pushed through mistakes but always felt horrid about them. Now I try really hard to just not care. And by showing others it does not really matter, I'm starting to really believe what I say! LOL And really, what does it matter? If what we make is functional and loved, that's the important thing.

Hello Darlene, I'm so glad I found you. I've been making quilts for quite a few years now, but in my retirement years, I'm finding having to pay for the quilting was becoming very costly. So after watching your video, I have started making my own QAYG. I love your attitude, and I have made quite a few what you call crazy quilts and I call my stack and wack quilts. Love the way you make things up as you go, my kinda girl. At the moment I am sitting here sipping a lovely glass of Shiraz after having sat at my machine all day, I am now sitting watching this once again to find out a few extra hints. Cheers to you all the way from down under in Australia.
