Learn how to make four half square triangles in one go!
This is a series of quilting tips and tricks. The half square triangle is probably the most versatile and easiest quilt block you will ever make. This is a great method for easily making four blocks in one go.
We started with two 10" squares. The unfinished size is 7"

hey fellow quilters!! yes this is a quick & easy half square triangle. BUT remember, with this cut you are working with BIAS edges. They tend to stretch when sewing. If you are cautious, then this works great. Me, I'd rather sew the seams diagonally corner to corner. This way your bias edges are on the sewn seam side instead of the outer side.

Yes on the outside bias edges. I prefer to starch my fabrics before cutting - so maybe this would help along with being very careful not to pull the edges??? It sure us an easier way if making multiple HST (half square triangles). I’m still trying to,work out the formula for doing this with different sizes of squares - and then also cutting top-to-bottom and then left-to-right to make more HST.

I'm new at this. Do you mean instead of making the 2 cuts, I should mark the middle and sew on either side, then cut th middle?

@Becky Calaway hi Becky! Yes, if you draw a diagonal line down your fabric, then sew a quarter inch seam on both sides of the line, cut the diagonal line, you will have 2 half Sq triangles without exposing the bias edges. This way, you will prevent any potential stretch from the bias & won't get that "wonky" look when ironing the square or sewing your piece together. Been there, down that. Have fun quilting!!

You just saved me so much time! My instructor when I learned to sew taught me to cut all of the squares, cut them into triangles, and then sew them together. Ugh! That was such a waste of time. Thank you thank you thank you!

@hollyandersen7478, that's so much time consuming. When I started quilting, I was very young, probably 12 or 13 years old. We didn't have social media or internet to learn proper techniques of quilting. I used to do triangles and sew them together for so many years, until I started watching videos on KZbin on quilting. Oh! How it changed my life, I can't describe it in words. These innovative ideas in sewing and quilting have reformed my life. Also, the amount of combinations you can create in patterns is numerous. Happy sewing.

Just take care when pinning the pieces together before you sew them as they are cut on the bias and there is a possibility of stretch. I haven't had this problem, and I've made a lot of HST's like this, but I have read where others have.

I like this way because the seam line is on the grain of the fabric rather than the bias. I’d rather work to sew the HSTs together without stretching the edges than deal with arced seams at pressing time.

What do you use to keep your ruler from sliding?
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 7 ай бұрын
I glued some of those little plastic door stop dots from Ikea but they are generally available from most hardware stores. I put too many on at the start and the ruler wouldn't move once I put it down. Which was a bit ridiculous, so I removed a number of the dots until it was easy to move the ruler but it still stayed firmly in place.

would a light weight iron on interfacing help stop the stretching???
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 11 ай бұрын
It may do Donna 😊. I don't seem to have a problem with the stretch. I find that if I make sure the pieces are pinned together, so they match up, and that I guide the them through the machine when I'm sewing, making adjustments as I sew, they come together fine..

Seams in quilting are sewn into other seams when you put the pieces together so they don't unravel. Believe me when I was starting out I was so concerned about my whole project falling apart, and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't.
