Edwin Sluis people were complaining about the vocals. Somebody said something about it not being genuine or something to that nature, but herbie actually wrote the song, the melodies for it, thinking about “what are people saying to him, so I came up with ‘heeeeeeey watermelon man.” So I just thought it was a funny contradiction within somebody(s) who probably consider themselves jazz purists or anal retentive at the least
