Winds of Winter Predictions: Euron, A Sea of Blood

I think you all forgot something crucial when discussing Euron's intentions in Oldtown. It is the center of the faith of the seven, containing the Starry Sept and Most Devout. Aeron's released TWOW chapter has visions of Euron on the iron throne with countless gods dead and impaled on the blades. He is also gathering holy men for sacrifice. Smashing Westeros' equivalent of the Vatican seems very much in line with what we currently know of his character and goals. Think of the power such a sacrifice could grant. For a new God to rise the old must fall.

Plus, I think his story is too tied to Oldtown, fAegon and Victarion-and since they cut all these players, there was no way to add him. Still not an excuse to butcher him like this. They might as well have added a completely different character, a bastard brother of Balon instead of sullying Euron's character with 'finga in da bum' guy.

I liked the interpretation of the Dragons, Krakens and Sphinx’ bowing down to Euron representing the Targaryens, Greyjoys and the Citadel. That makes a lot of sense!

To put it simply: Euron aspires to be akin to the Bloodstone Emperor of yore. And to top that off, Danaerys is already the known successor of that line, from one of her specific visions at the House of the Undying.

I suspect the Valyrians are just one branch of descendants of the Amethyst Empress, and Azor Ahai (with the Sarnori, and Hyrkoon being other branches, and possibly the Rhoynar and Yi Ti as well) I don't think Azor Ahai is the Bloodstone Emperor. It's possible that Azor Ahai may have been the Empress' other brother, and that's probably where the old Valyrian Dragonrider custom of incest comes from.

If Oldtown is to be the point where Kraken and Dragon meet, I'd point out that the great smells of blood and battle attracted Drogon to the fighting pits. I wonder if the smells of blood would cause the dragons to respond with an aggression that Euron didn't anticipate. I also don't think that the dragon horn will bind the dragons to Euron's will, Moqorro would totally interfere with that idea. I do love the Euron - Night King connection though!

P Muller I was surprised to find myself really enjoying Stannis’ storyline. When we leave him in Dance, he is snowbound and betrayed, with knives all around him. I think he’ll get out of it as well. This guy is a seasoned warrior. I will also be shocked if he burns his daughter like in the show-that felt out of character. I disagree with so many directions the show went... but alas, poor Stannis, we hardly knew thee!

P Muller What’s great about Stannis is we never get his POV. We get hints of his inner thoughts filtered through others. He’s this gray character that we only see through someone else’s eyes. Maester Cressen saw Stannis differently than anyone else: a hard, strong man that no one loved... or even liked, really. He’s stiff necked, but he keeps someone like Davos around to try and keep him honest-he hates the politics of the highborn. I think I like Stannis bc Davos likes him. I do think he’s damned himself by murdering his brother, though it’s no more than Renly would’ve done to him given the chance. At the very least, I hope he deals the Boltons a deep wound before he is taken off the board.

Don't forget that Euron didn't want to attack Oldtown. He went south becouse of journey to slavers bay, to bring Daenerys and her dragons to Westeros. But than he sent Victarion there and was pushed to attack Arbor and Oldtown by other ironborn, that just wanted to raid and plunder. Attacking Oldtown was never his intention.

@Nick Kurtz I agree with you. I tend to think IF Stannis & Daenarys do meet, there is a lot that indicates they would become allies not only against The Others, but also The Scouring of The Kingdom. From a certain perspective both have an equal claim to the Iron Throne. Stannis through the new Baratheon dynasty that Robert created, and Daenarys through the Targaryen dynasty that was usurped/defeated. They are both mostly concerned about the fact that within each of their familial dynasties, each of them is The Rightful Heir. Also, I think the fact that they share blood ties will mean something to them both. Yes, Stannis shares blood with Eddric Storm, but he never had a claim to the throne. Also, for a long time, Stannis flat out refused killing him because they share blood. So, I think it's quite possible they could and will team up if they do meet. More like an uneasy alliance to start. Something like, " Let's save everything first, get everything under control, and then deal with who has the better claim". Then 1 or both of them could die, allowing it to never come down to the 2 of them facing off. 🤷 It's one theory anyway🤔❤

That is a pretty cool match up honestly, they are so different and yet so alike. Deeply tied to the sea, magic and gods, prophecy. Stannis has a history with the Ironborn. Both have complex relationships with they’re brothers, who were kings and warriors. Both killed brother(s) with magic assassins with interesting faces. Yet Stannis is utterly devoted to others and duty. While Euron wants power for himself for powers sake alone.

Oh yes, the next three books are my favorites of the series with Storm being the best. IMO. I still remember the first time I read Feast and Dance for the first time and how amazing it was because of how different they are from the show. Tinfoil theory on Euron's gal pal: She's not really there. We see them laugh at the dwarfs, so we know they see the same thing, but we don't see them acknowledge one another. I think this woman could be using a glass candle to watch Euron. It could explain why she appears as a shadow w/fiery hands as opposed to a regular woman. The "alive" with pale white fire description could imply the candle is being actively used at that moment. Also, there's some similarities between the glass candle's description and the woman's. (Alleras nodded at the glass candle) "Sam stared at the strange pale flame for a moment, then blinked and looked away". "Pate knew about the glass candles, though he had never seen one burn...He had heard there were four; one was green and three were black, and all were tall and twisted". "Beside him stood a shadow in woman's form, long and tall and terrible, her hands alive with pale white fire..." As to her identity, I'd guess Sarella/Alleras, using a glass candle she takes before being forced to flee the Citadel due to Euron's attack on Oldtown. Sam might not be the only one to steal something before being forced to leave...Not to mention, a gc would be a convenient way to inform Marwyn as to what transpired with Euron, or just spy on Euron for Marwyn and Daenerys.

Euron is certainly an evil self aggrandizing maniac with an insane level of diabolical aspirations. Among many major issues with the show , the HBO series' portrayal of him was terrible all around & did not capture him at all ; honestly they would have been better off leaving him an oft rumored & whispered about off-screen character with no payoff , the lack of follow through similar to many other show concepts. But anyway , definitely will be interesting to see what comes of Euron's attempts , he is surely trying to become a god and will stop at nothing to do so , hopefully it becomes a mega epic Icarus-like iteration collapse that we see at some point with Euron. So much theorizing and conjecture on exactly what he will / be able to summon , what his plans are for Oldtown (beyond destruction) ; though as mentioned here and elsewhere it does seem like he wants to break the world and create it anew in his evil image with Euron as a seeming deity at the helm. This impending blood sacrifice should be epic ; all types of religious and magical blood , his own kin (kin-slaying) and his child via Falia (could be argued kings-blood at work there) , will be interesting to see what transpires from that. Also it has to be said Euron must be politically savvy / astute and charismatic as well because he could not have gotten where he is without those willing to follow and support him. And i think Euron's metaphysical experience trial / evaluation from Bloodraven in Euron's youth , where Bloodraven likely deemed him to sick and evil to be chosen , gave EG a glimpse into the magical mysteries of the world of which he took to a very dark place and fueled his endless selfish evil ambitions. One thing I am not sold on is that he will get his hands on the Horn of Winter , not saying definitely not but sort of too much a monopoly on horns for me considering he already has the dragon-binder , and i don't believe the HoW will take down The Wall anyway. The timing with the books' Night's King is a bit murky but most of it suggests that whole episode came after the Wall was built and the HoW was blown during that time and the Wall is still up and intact. Though with dragon-binder , knowing Euron clearly is 10 steps ahead of not the sharpest Victarion , definitely curious to see what the exact results of blowing the dragon-binder will be. Euron is just a well written evil villain whose fall / collapse should be just as epic as his rise with likely some type of backfire or blowback with his continued reckless heinous actions , especially with the idea of the magical cost principle we see so often in GRRM's ASoIaF universe.

Yes. Euron was a candidate rejected by Bloodraven. His potential is similar to Bran's so his idea about becoming some sort of "god" is not so crazy as it appears from the outside. He has the potential to see things near & far, past & future. He is likely a warg & a green seer.

@@Niall001 yes very likely he has the magical predisposition and possibly the old gods rare warg and greenseer abilities , which will continue to fuel his ego and ambitions that he is god-like and superior to most everyone. Ntm , his frequent and continued use of psychedelics (via Shade of the Evening) , encountering other magical people like warlocks and besting them and if he actually went to Valyria and Asshai (possibly even to Stygai) surviving those and likely learning / dabbling with all sorts of other magic from those areas are just going to fuel his craziness and supremacy more. He likely encountered some form and / or teachings of the Church of Starry Wisdom and the Bloodstone Emperor (likely in Asshai) and the atrocities the B.E. kept doing to empower himself further and further of which Euron is seemingly trying to emulate (he does seem a modern iteration of the Bloodstone Emperor on many levels) . Euron's magical predisposition , with possibly numerous innate magical abilities coupled with drug use and his travels & life experiences of basically doing heinous act after heinous act without any sort of reckoning are all contributing & culminating into what we are getting with current Euron. Literally a recipe for disaster.

The Euron plot is so interesting. Like what makes him think he can turn himself into a god. The only other character we’ve seen that is being set up to be “god-like” is bran and most of us believe he is being tricked somehow. So naturally that makes me wonder if someone is tricking Euron and that everything he is about to do to become this god will really benefit some unknown person. I think “an American thinks” had a theory a long time ago tldr it’s about the others being dead wargs both children and humans mostlike who either created a body or took a body to live in somehow. Maybe we have some body snatchers coming in the next book lol. Either way it’s dark, scary, and super cool can’t wait!

I kinda got the feeling that Euron went to Oldtown because his followers were getting impatient with their lust for riches and he was worried they wouldn't have the patience for the long game of stealing dragons. But there's too much hype around oceans of blood next to a city that could contain nuclear-level game changing artifacts. I subscribe to the idea that first it's a trap for the Redwyne fleet to be devoured by summoned krakens, then Oldtown will get sacked but I don't know if it's for anything specific. Ironborn aren't likely to stay long regardless.

Could "the shadow in woman's form with hands of pale fire" be Quaithe? She is a shadow binder and possibly using a glass candle. Could he tempt her & she accepts because she seems to want to help Dany? But then things go terribly wrong for Quaithe? I predict Hands of White Fire Lady is Aeron. Tin foil theory: Aeron witnesses Euron's victory at sea and Oldtown, and starts to beleive the mad dreams of Euron, then does worship him as Euron demanded. He becomes Euron's high priest and is taught some fire magic. Perhaps he is dressed as a woman to represent how easily he submits to Euron. Aeron comes from a culture where women are taught readily submission to men, maybe he fills that role. Lot of what ifs, but how awesome would it be to see Aeron become everything he feared to be. I think Euron meant it when he offered his brother a position of power. Aeron would not submit out of fear or love, but probably a display of unstoppable power.

These stories from the Age of Heroes which seem to continually repeat in the present leads me to believe George is foreshadowing the fact that these stories aren't from the "past" per say, but are actually prophecies of future events.

@Ramon Suarez I prefer the idea that maybe the visions and prophecies that people see and assume as being from the future are actually from the past; if what they see is something they don't want to happen, maybe through paranoia (a la Cersei) they might help it ocurring, like a self-fulfilling prophecy; if it's something they want to happen they will work towards it with a belief that no one else has (because they've seen it) and end reaching that vision. It would be a way to symbolize the cyclical nature of History, of Life. I don't necessarily believe that this is how GRRM has prophecies and visions work in his story, but it's an idea that I find interesting. You suggested that maybe the written past is actually the future, confused as the past; I'm suggesting that maybe the foreseen future is actually the past, confused as the future. Regardless of who is right between the two of us, if neither, or even both, the fact is that similar events and similar kinds of people exist in different times of History (an idea that is in line with both of our theories) - and this story is showing that.

@@beatrizfernandes1506 In my interpretation both your theory and mine aren't exclusive to one another. I believe that George is using the Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" template for his universe. This means that what "happened," is "happening," and "will happen" is bound to happen endlessly in a cycle of eternal recurrence. So terms like "past", "present" and "future" really have no absolute meaning - which is why I put "past" in quotation marks in my first post. If one accepts the theory that George is really retelling the Ragnarok saga in the Song of Ice and Fire you can see how this applies. At the end of that great war between the Norse Gods and their enemies the entire universe is destroyed save for two humans, Líf and Lífþrasir, will have also survived the destruction by hiding in the wood Hoddmímis holt. And the cycle will begin all over again.

I’m guardedly optimistic that we won’t have to wait ages for book 7 after book 6 is released, since I’d imagine the big challenge for George R.R. Martin (a prolific writer) is to contain the remaining story within two books. The release of Winds of Winter should be confirmation that he’s found a way to do it, and has the structure of A Dream of Spring laid out.

I just finished my reread of A Game of Thrones and Danaerys has a HUGE vision in the flames of Khal Drogo's funeral pyre. She also recognizes that SHE is Fire, just as Bran has the dream that Jon is Ice. The lannguage of the funeral pyre is extremely symbolic, with the warlocks from the House of the Undying, either the weirwood, or the shade of the evening tree, then it shows masts of ships and great wings, as of dragons before showing the great Houses of Westeros by their sigils.

In it, he said he was stoked for the roll because he had read the books and COULD NOT WAIT to play an evil maniacal possible sorcerer trying to become God. When he got the scripts, he was so disappointed, so he said "fuck it, I'll just play the hell out of this douchey pirate if thats how they want it". Poor guy

Marla Mathews I read that interview, too. The guy is a decent actor. He’s got an intimidating/slightly mad look that could’ve been utilized in a more subtle way. I think he could have pulled off the real Euron, which makes the show’s direction that much more disappointing.

About that weirwood tree with the purple moss, I heard a theory that the trees in front of the House of the Undying might be rotten or corrupted weirwoods. The parallels _are_ there. The Shade of the Evening is similar in its effects to weirwood paste in that it's a hallucinogenic liquid. It's also blue, the opposite of red (not really, but that's the common belief and this isn't a science lesson). And when you combine blue and red you get purple. Blue like the ocean and red like blood. Both of those are in abundance around the Iron Isles and Qarth. Also, octopus blood doesn't have hemoglobin which makes it blue. Like Shade of the Evening. Bloody hands of gods and blue blood of Cthulhu sounds incredibly dangerous. That's without combining them and giving them to a sadistic, madman who grew up sexually assaulting and killing his little relatives.

The other thing in Old Towne... and I'm surprised you didn't mention it... is the religious competition - the Scept, the Citadel, the Silent Sisters, and I'd imagine the training ground for Septs and Septons is there too... (or is that the Scept). The headquarters for the Faith of the Seven was there until they build Baylor's Scept in Kings Landing - but if he takes out his competition... or shows that all the other gods bleed somehow... then Euron will have a distinct advantage.

so, I will point out that there is a burning forest behind him in that vision. It's not just the forest - the weirwood canopy is described as a blaze of flame in a Theon chapter, thus conveying the burning tree / burning bush symbolism of Moses onto the weirwoods and making them symbolic burning trees (they are full of the 'fire of the gods' if you will). Thus the burning forest may represent the Old Gods in that vision. Agree on your analysis - he will inevitably bite off more than he can chew :)
