What happens if I just don't get it? the movie made it clear but the book doesn't really offer counter examples of good dictators/absolute power. check out Legend of Galactic Heroes. Maybe this is just a warning against Hitler- a specific type of leader...OTL.

I've yet to see a charismatic leader in my life, so I can see how I'd be susceptible to one. God, especially if it were someone who seemed so great that I wished to dedicate myself to his/her will. I think we'd all like to think we'd be immune, but we wouldn't. For real though, so much moreso today than in the era Dune sprung out of, the world, society, our government, it is all just so empty, dead. Just give me someone who truly has life, who is honest and charismatic, who seems to like or love me, and has a vision of a better world than he is dedicated to... I think, if I believed in it, it'd be all over. That kind of sureness is hard to come by.. or should I say, impossible, most of the time, just not out there. So if it were available, God, I'd want to believe it, I'd want to serve it, i'd do so to my peril, and the peril of everyone else

One question I’d be interested to hear you explore is *why* were the Fremen such good fighters. Sure they lived in harsh conditions, but the martial prowess of the Fremen surely cannot be attributed to that alone. They lacked martial discipline, technology, and the nutrition required to excel as elite fighters. My theory is that the answer lies in the spice, infused in their being for generations. Perhaps Fremen did not have prescience like that of Paul, but maybe after generations of spice dependency they benefited from split-second glimpses into the future - glimpses that would surely benefit a civilization of fighters in battle. Do you think there’s anything to that?
