"Therers no objective quality to art, it all subjective" thats why you can learn art as a skill which lets you express yourself better. A skill that is surprisingly easy to quantify once you get to learning it, when you figure out the things you actually learn to do like proper lighting, shading, positioning, not wasting space or time (applicable to writing as well). Art is very much an objective thing you can learn and quantify. You can't just say theres no better artists because its all subjective.

Art isn't subjective. TASTE is subjective. If you ordered pasta carbonara, and I served you a cup of maruchan noodles, I objectively failed at making pasta carbonara. If I set out to render a semi realistic portrait of a Chihuahua, and I drew a banana slug, I objectively failed to make a Chihuahua. If I try to make a pony out of a trick balloon and I make a crown, that's not a pony. Art is objective, but, that criteria is based on what you're trying to do. If there's no such thing as a "bad" film, Quinton, point your smart phone at a freshly coiled dog turd and hit record. Call that a Disney musical and see what a sane audience does to your avant garde opus. There are general criteria that qualifies a musical, like singing and dancing, the same applies to any established art form. A column is a column; a chair is a chair; a pair of pants is a pair of pantlegs; and a bread pudding requires, at some phase of the gastronomical process, you include bread.

@GBDupree16 күн бұрын
I don't even like Soma, and its definitely not scary to me (I'm surprised that anyone actually does find it scary), but its certainly a horror game. It isn't horror 100% of the time, but it is 100% a horror game. Most horror games aren't scary due to various reasons (including personal taste) but that isn't what makes things horror, that's for sure. Horror is closer to an aesthetic than a game genre, but we use it as a game genre since many games that are horror themed share gameplay elements. However a game can have zero of those gameplay elements and still be horror. Its a bit of a tricky thing to quantify as so many people interpret it differently, such as the aesthetic/gameplay divide that people fight over as well as subjective taste. There can even be games that are clearly "not" horror yet share many elements of it, such as a kids game with some spooky elements, such as Luigi's Mansion. All this to say: I can empathize and see where someone would get the wrong impression of what horror is or should be, or have subjective qualities to what makes something horror, such as how scary it is. Though how scary something is, is subjective, there are limits to that; such as Luigi's mansion clearly trying to have spooky elements, but also trying NOT to actually scare kids. So in that sense I can see an argument against Luigi's Mansion being a horror game, but then that argument could be used to claim another game isn't horror because it isn't scary. I'd argue its based on intent. Neither Soma nor Luigi's Mansion are scary to me, but one of those is clearly TRYING to be scary. I'd also say there isn't really a concrete element that all horror games must have in order to be called horror. the horror aesthetics of Soma and Bloodborne have basically nothing in common outside of dark enviroments, and I'm of the belief that a horror game can take place in bright enviroments, so that isn't the definitive trait of what makes Horror.

It’s basically the idea that an expression is true in every singular case, and cannot return a result that is false. It’s the opposite of a contradiction, the expression itself proves itself, as opposed to disproving itself. It’s also used in other contexts outside of logic, like the idea of saying two things in different terms, and that’s usually in a negative connotation to call something redundant, but I just find it funny he used that word. Because in my brain, tautology = unfalsifiable truth lol. Pro tip, just use the word ‘redundant’ so everyone can actually understand your pretentious video essay.

I remember once when Rags was objectively wrong. He said Lake Titicaca was a lake in Mexico that the Aztecs used. Neither of these are true. I wish I remembered the video but as I consume so much EFAP, that would be objectively difficult to do.
@ObinWangRavioli17 күн бұрын
The fact Quinton is arguing that Efap poses thier own opinion as unarguable fact but is simultaneously arguing ON BEHALF of someone named "The Right Opinion" is wild. Idk why i put myself though this again cause i wanted to literaly walk into traffic the first time around. Thanks for reminding me im still alive @Wolf

Pluto isn't a planet because we discovered hundreds of Pluto and bigger sized rocks in our outer solar system. Instead of having 800 planets in our solar system they decided to get rid of Pluto. As a fan of history though I kind of like the inclusion of Pluto.

Personally I'm annoyed that they didn't use the Wilhelm Scream... Lucas reintroduced it to a new generation of fans. It was a trope that was discarded. Is it the worst thing - no, but it's snide and lousy. It's like going to a kids birthday party and refusing to wear the silly hats everyone is wearing.

Holy shit, imagine being the type of person who believes that actively thinking about the thing you're consuming and talking about it as it happens is a flawed method for criticism and analysis. Like what happens to Quinton when he watches a movie? Does his brain actually turn off until the pictures stop moving across the screen?

18:00 People use words incorrectly and dictionaries update with that incorrect usage. I would consider that a flaw with dictionaries and a bastardization of language.

5:29 while I would entirely agree on phones, which are nearly 100% functionality, i disagree on cars. Everything about a car that is not under the category of function, comfort, or accessory (radio, power seats, etc.) would fall under esthetic. Jaguars, Mercedes, and Toyota all make similarly function sedans. They look nothing alike. Therefore, there is art in cars. So Ha mauler, you are wrong, sir. Wrong, I say!

I am glad that in modern years Rags spends less time going off on his anti-theism rants. They derail the conversation every time he brings it up, and it's just frustrating and purposely instigating. So I appreciate how he's developed his arguments regarding objectivity and hard fact beyond that as his go to example.
@WilliamParry-db5kx18 күн бұрын

OH In the third or fourth repeat of Quinton saying 'flood thesis', I realized that he was saying '*flawed* thesis', he'd just mangled the pronunciation so much that it was incomprehensible and hadn't bothered to do another take.
@Snuffalaffagas17 күн бұрын
Arguably, an opinion can't be objective. Just because you label the statement "the sun is a star," your opinion doesn't make that statement definitionally an opinion. It's a statement of fact that you would be falsely labeling an opinion. The definition of opinion being used in your context would be "A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof". As soon as you introduce proof and knowledge it ceases to be opinion even if you label it as such
