Peyton Reed also apparently directed some of 'The Weird Al Show,' meaning that he took part in TWO niche things that I loved as a child.

I think it's also kinda horrifying and funny that eventhough the guy clearly was willing to wreck Herby himself, the fact that Horace single tiredly just flat out murdered Herby while the guy watched in horror was pretty great.

When you get down to it, a character like Herbie and the films he's in has to come down to your taste. I've seen a lot of the other reviewers you mentioned where I realized ... likely they didn't grow up on the Herbie films which were created as family children's films along the lines of the absent minded professor and the shaggy dog and Mary poppins, live action stories that were pretty much mimicking the Disney animated charm. It's interesting to note that Herbie was one of the last characters/ideas that Walt Disney worked on in its earliest stages before he passed away, which is why I think it has that Disney magic. Doug Walker loves Mary Poppins whereas he's just charmed by The Love Bug, which tells me if he saw this as a kid, he too might of loved it more. I guess I was a diehard Herbie fan as a kid because I own copies of all the films, but overtime I've come to pretty much loving the original more than the others that still are great, but lack the magical and amazing story that the first one had. This reboot/remake wasn't my favorite, but it's nice to see it again and to see someone else like it. Thanks to your review, I actually do appreciate it more than I did before. You have a great thing going on here with your channel. Will check out your other reviews.

Quinton, as a die hard Herbie fan I thoroughly enjoyed your review. While I do not consider TLB '97 & HFL "cannon" I like you hold a deep childhood appreciation for this movie. I can actually watch it, unlike HFL. While I, as a car history buff, take problem with the whole Herbie's birth sequence their are plenty of things to love, especially seeing Dean Jones & Herbie together again (sadly for the last time). And I also love Horace, not so much as a character, but as a concept. Actually there might be too much for me to list in a KZbin comment. LOL

It was a good and detailed review but I was disappointed you didn't give a bit more time to two 60s icons who were in this film: Micky Dolenz (of The Monkees - who were going through the 30th anniversary at that time and had done a TV movie of their own in '96) and Clarence Williams III, best known for his role as "Linc" on the 60s series, "The Mod Squad". I'd love it if you could do reviews based on those shows/movies.

You might actually enjoy it more if you don't. It's sort of a "soft reboot"; it does kind of carry on from the existing source material but actually contradicts some of the canon of the previous movies. But there's nothing you can't understand in this movie that would require seeing the previous movies to be able to get. So short answer, no.

Hey Quinton. I'm new to your videos but love what I've seen so far. At first I was worried about this because I see you as someone with the mind of a critic (in the best way of course) and I too was a "Herbie-holic." I had every movie on VHS (and I was born late 90's so that took some doing.) this movie, for some reason was my favorite. I'm happy that I completely agree with everything you've said through out the review. Totally spot on. Marry me dude.

Also, regarding this being a sequel to the first movie, I've thought of a (darker) timeline. 1st movie happens as planed, happy endings, etc. movie 2: Jim's wife dies and he quits racing, leaving Herbie behind. Movie 3, he changes his mind and "makes a comeback." Movie 4, he retires and leaves Herbie to his (what were they, his nephews?) then Simon buys Herbie off them with a boat load of money, this movie happens and somehow Herbie ends up abandoned and so begins HFL (if you see it as cannon). Just an idea I wanted to throw out there. Again, love the review!

That's just the thing tho -- I realize it doesn't feel like a "Herbie movie." A Herbie movie would have a band of thieves hide a rare gem in Heb's gas cap and then they spend the entire movie chasing him around trying to get it back. But I don't really care if it isn't a Herbie movie. It's good. It's a GOOD movie. So I like it.

I like the Love Bug movies. They are light hearted and fun. A few months ago I decided to catch up on all of the Yorgos Lanthimos films which were made to specifically to be shocking, disturbing, and depressing, therefore irritating. I was in such a funk that I watched Herbie: Fully Loaded which put me in a better state of mind. It wasn’t a great film in any way but it sure is a fun popcorn film compared to an unrealistic movie about a society inexplicably turning people into animals because of an overpopulation problem.

2 random things I want to say. -1. I like to think that all the films are still canon. In the case of other vehicles and objects coming to life, I think in the universe of Herbie, some objects are given life in different ways. We just see Herbie's specifically in this film. But for Herbie Rides Again, each living object has its own history and ways they became alive. And as for Jim being single again in Monte Carlo... Eh, they briefly separated but got back together?... I'm just working with what I got. (Also, I can't work with the TV show, so without writing off the hard work the crew did on that show, I'll say it was an in-universe tv show that starred Jim and Herbie.) -2. Since I am coming off of rewatching the Nick sitcom videos for the 53rd time, I'll present a weird fact about the Herbie films... The Herbie Cinematic Universe. Because the Herbie films actually connect to at least 5 other Disney films. The Absent-Minded Professor and its sequel, Son of Flubber. And the Dexter Riley Trilogy (The Computer Wore Tennis. Now You See Him, Now You Don't. And The Strongest Man in the World) Now the Dexter Riley films(high concept comedies starring Kurt Russell) take place at the fictional Medfield College that was featured in Absent-Minded Professor. And the antagonist of The Absent-Minded Professor was Alonzo Hawk, played by actor Keenan Wynn, who would reprise the role as the antagonist in Herbie Rides Again. So, yeah. Disney had a cinematic universe for it's high concept comedy films of the 1950s-1970s(technically includes the 1997 Love Bug film and Herbie Fully Loaded). I don't know if you will ever tackle a Herbie retrospective after the iCarly/Victorious one is done with, but it might be a nice refresher to do one of those videos on a series you like that won't make you feel pain after marathoning everything. And if you do, I hope that this weird factoid is brought up.

Kudos to you for mounting such an elaborate and passionate defense of this movie, something I never could have imagined. I can't argue with your nostalgia or childhood affection for the film. And it does have a few things in its favor -- the final Dean Jones appearance in a Herbie film, director Peyton Reed who would go on to far better things, Dana Gould making the most of his henchman role. Your opinions are all valid, but since you invite comment at the end, here's why I can't stand this movie. - I know you like Horace, but the "evil twin" feels like the well you go to when all your other ideas are tapped out. It reminds me of the Inspector Gadget movie a few years later where they go straight to "build an Evil Gadget" in the FIRST MOVIE. I guess at least this one is five movies in, but still. It's so uninspired IMO. I prefer the mold you astutely identify in the Herbie sequels -- where Herbie shows up to put his stamp (tire tracks) all over some pre-existing genre plot. - Herbie works better when his origins are a mystery. Tennessee's explanation in the original movie is simple, elegant, and leaves room for interpretation. "Things have an inner life" really is a concept from eastern philosophy and it's fun to imagine it playing out in this way. Plus it leaves room for the other "living" objects we see in later films -- Old Number 22, the music box, the other Beetles, and of course Giselle. Why couldn't Horace have naturally arisen in this way? Another sentient Bug out there who just happened to be evil? - The origin we get in this movie not only knocks far better movies out of the canon, but also feels like some second-rate Mr. Freeze story knockoff. A picture falls in a vat of metal? It's far less plausible than just not knowing, and yes, the idea that the military would hang so much on a dumb mistranslation is absurd, as is the idea that a scientist would attempt the project despite knowing it was all just a mistranslation. This movie is my go-to example for how movies can be better off for not trying to explain everything. - The "rules" that result from the new origin are way too constrictive. Now you can't replace a part on Herbie unless it's made from the same metal? First of all, what a hassle! How did they ever fix him before? Second of all, there are different kinds of metal on a car. Did the window trim come from the same vat as the body panels? Is the chassis the same metal as the engine block? What? I know the Herbie movies aren't too keen on the technical details of automobiles but even a layman would bump on these things. Additionally, they would need not just a place to melt down metal but actual factory tooling for this particular car, which, you know, costs millions of dollars. This is all too much for me. Why even raise these questions? You raise the question of "how many parts can we replace before it's not the same car?" but I'd rather shrug off that question than all this stuff. Real cars get restored all the time, and if it's the same car, it's the same car. At a certain point you know it isn't, and we can just go by feel there. - On a similarly technical nitpick, I hate that Herbie gets split lengthwise in this movie. I guess you could argue that splitting horizontally is equally implausible and damaging to the drivetrain, but I get hung up on how the car could possibly run with the engine and axles split in half. For some reason the rear of the car winning the race remains more believable to me. This is subjective as it's all fantasy nonsense but the lengthwise split rubs me the wrong way. It also seems much harder to repair. Are they going to melt the whole car down again after this? - Small issue -- I don't like Herbie's stripes and number graphics, inaccurate to the previous films. Herbie Fully Loaded also unnecessarily alters them, but comes closer to the proper designs. - But here's my biggest problem with the movie: It gets Herbie's character wrong. As great as Jones' delivery is, I don't think his speech here about Herbie is accurate. Herbie isn't just what's good and decent and pure. He has good qualities -- he is loving and loyal, yes. But he's also mischievous, headstrong, jealous, hot-headed, courageous, reckless, daring, fearless. Herbie destroys a Lamborghini in a fit of rage. Herbie wins races while split in half. Herbie drives down the side of mountains. Herbie can drive sideways or on the ceiling. Herbie jumps between buildings. Herbie drives up the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge and on the ledges of skyscrapers. Herbie enters a dangerous game of chicken just to torture Willoughby. Herbie swims with sharks. Herbie leads an army of VWs against a fleet of bulldozers. Herbie gets in tug-of-wars with the police to mess with Alonzo Hawk. Herbie takes on gun-wielding jewel thieves and leads them on madcap chases. Herbie will wreak havoc on a cruise ship to protect a kid, even if it gets him thrown overboard. Herbie will face off with an airplane and WIN. Herbie is a BADASS. That's what makes him fun. But here, Herbie is utterly neutered to serve as a contrast to the ferocity and evil of Horace, and it's pathetic. Herbie gets cornered by Horace in an alley, and you're telling me all he does is cower and tremble? Even if Herbie goes down, he does NOT go down without a fight. I cannot abide this wimpy version of Herbie. It's a disgrace. I'm a huge Herbie fan myself. To give you a sense of my taste, I'd say I rank the Herbie films in pretty much the order they were made. The original Love Bug is pretty much a perfect movie, and Herbie Rides Again is actually the funniest with its full on Looney Tunes logic set pieces. I don't consider this movie or the (sad, slow, boring) TV series part of my personal headcanon, but I'll allow Herbie Fully Loaded. Admittedly, its flaws are many, but it also has enough worthwhile moments to forgive them. But that's another discussion. Another factor in our differing tastes, I think, is that the 1997 movie came out when I was a teenager (a very critical age) while Fully Loaded came out when I was an adult and just grateful to see a new Herbie movie. I feel like while this movie may be enjoying the protection of your childhood nostalgia bubble, Herbie Fully Loaded may have hit you in the beginnings of your more critical adolescent years, as the '97 movie did for me.

Now the whole creator thing and how people view him. For me this is really weird, but I saw it more like a germen who is really smart. I mean just because he is Germen does not mean he is what everyone thinks he might be. Also I know this means nothing but the actor is also Jewish who plays him. As well as a man who in real life fought in ww2. So I see him as a smart germen who is Jewish who the US government wanted to use, and all because of a mistranslation. So to me a bit like Albert Einstein's situation if that makes any sense? Next is the death of Herbie...I tried so hard not to cry at that. I'm a 30 year old man and I can't stand to see Herbie hurt so them doing that was so painful! Also strongly agree that Horace is the best fucking car I've ever seen. When i saw him I had to show my BF who was playing gran Turismo 7. He's just so cool! And when he dies I said this, "...I just saw a car go to hell...Which not only do I believe is what is implied. I never thought I would see that in a DISNEY MOVIE!" And my god with Simon getting so emotional over Horace's death. I felt that! It was clear the car understood him so well and seeing them die like that. Got me emotional. Then I got out of it with the cop saying the words, "Devil car." and I was like, "Yes! I don't believe that, but after today, yes! That was a Devil car! I saw a car go back to hell so Devil car fits perfectly for Horace!"

One question: why doesn't horace blow herbie up if the intent is to kill him? If he has so many death gadgets surely he could have pulverized herbie.

Maybe the death gadgets weren't functional yet and he just got bored of ramming the fuck out of him?

The reason people don't like this movie is that it's really dumb. Like, why are there dumb living cars in a movie that's trying to be dramatic? Why did they kill one of the dumb living car in such a brutal way? Why does any of this exist? What the hell is going on?
