This was awesome (thank you). (quite the badass socket wrench towards the end). I remember an episode of HTH where Al had to pull an excavator's final drive out of one.

I like it better when how does it because he explains what he's doing. And it's a lot closer so you see what exactly what they're doing close up. Thank you

Nigel, just watched the recovery videos. First class. 20 years under water and mud and she started with fresh oil and filters and minimal work.

No,The brakes are always on,and only released with hydraulic pressure.The other way is to remove the final drive cover and remove the centre shaft that drives the 3 sun gears

@646klein That 'mound' is all rock product from this pit that took them 3 days to build as an access road to the machine.This is a 30 foot deep silt settling pond at a gravel pit.The machine was submersed on its side right under water
@ryanrb2511 жыл бұрын
The track levers are pilot valves aren't a mechanical linkage to the valves so you can't just release the valve so the final drives spin. The sun gear needs to be removed from the final drive on each side in order to allow them to spin freely.

Can you guys use a block pulley on excavator side of cable to double line pull? This way CATs drive train saved and only winch does the work?Nice job...love them ole CATs.

This is a 50 foot deep silt settling pond at a gravel pit,That 'gravel' took them 2 or 3 days to get in there to gain access to the middle of this pond for the recovery.

Could the valves not be opened and let the tracks turn so it tows a little easier? Seems a kinda hard way to do it.
@flyinasscritter12 жыл бұрын
ah that might be true cause i have a takeuchi tl 130 skid steer and it does have brakes that are pressure activated - forgot about that - when you stop moving brakes are automatically activated - i have a bobcat 753 that isnt the same and it could be unhooked because it doesnt have pressure brakes - guess it depends on the machine - thanks
@MachineryMayhem12 жыл бұрын
Seems to me that they were towing it INTO the hill, if they would have had the cats closer they would have pulled it up the hill. But then again I`m on my couch not at the site. Thanks for the vid.
@flyinasscritter12 жыл бұрын
cant you unhook the lines to the final drives also- so that there is no pressure in the drives and it just turns freely - but in the mud it prob a bad ideal-

Hope that the machine was de- watered and going again, I know on some 360's you can mecanically release the brakes to allow towing, but not sure about the Volvo's.

Considering how easy it is to get stuck, why not place lifting/towing brackets on the excavators? They would have to be substantial to support the demands placed on them but would be cost effective when you consider the unintentional damage to the machine that occurs upon lifting or dragging.
@bjooppeg12 жыл бұрын
See many ask you why you don't let the track run. I'm NOT a expert, but would it not be possible to take hydraulic pressure from another machine and with a tube connect it to the hydraulic central on the excavator and then run the tracks? The brake you talk about, is it a hydraulic brake? then will it not be off if you just open the tube and relic the pressure? Again I'm not a expert on excavators, just questions I hope you can answer.

Totally agree. Obviously the stuck excavator was dead, but had one of those dozers bladed off that pile of rock the job would have been done and dusted. At the start of the recovery they were trying to pull the excavator THOUGH the rock, not over it.

I would've run a hydraulic line to the pumps on the trackhoe and cleared the water (if any) and used it's own tracks to help with recovery.

If you run the hydraulics off a separate system on a different rig, the motor is bypassed.
@skadill10 жыл бұрын
So how would it have gone from laying completely sideways on its pump side to upright? This was the only -only way for it to be done,it worked fine.
@awlniter110 жыл бұрын
skadill Once it was upright I'd hook up the lines of course. Those tow leads broke and were a danger pulling that much weight. I tried to get this guy to listen to reason too. We had another Trackhoe less than 30 miles away. www.heraldnet.com/article/20070505/NEWS01/705050740
