Good on you Kansas, we are living on our fourth property now, we had a farm and lost it because of the changes a change of government brought into the country, we moved on working for others and bought a 20 acre block of land, we sold it and continued working for others then bought a house, we sold it and moved to Australia this time the house prices have doubled, so now we are looking at retiring to a block of land and selling the house we are living in, this will mean we will be mortgage free and that's what everyone wants. What I'm trying to say is don't give up when things don't work out, and when you buy a place and can sell it for double the price you paid then do so and move on to the next place, remember to save all the money you can until you finally can pay cash for a place, your goal should be to own your own place without a mortgage that way no one will be able to take the bit of land away from you.

I am a retired woman who has lived in the wilderness most of my adult life. I too have had to try and find ways to make money while in the wilderness. I started 83 miles from Fairbanks...It was an important life. I did that in my 30's. Its much harder then you think but the trade off is worth it. I am now buying an A frame on the river in the wilderness of Montana. I am looking for someone to help me there as it is a lot of work to move into a house i the winter. I make leather work and do massage and do cooking for people. I have woofers come in the summer and help do gardens and chop wood and help with mowing and trimming of trees. It is a beginning adventure again and I find that the wilderness offers help to you in many ways...AS Shawn said you can do this sensibly or just jump in and trust there are those around you who will help you

I salute you on your accomplishments and your lifestyle. That you had a good nest egg to start your present project is great but not essential. There are several ways to live an outdoor lifestyle. I bought land 45yrs ago (at age 23) because I knew then that I couldn't live in the city. I knew there would be a lot of work involved and that it would take a lot of money. My biggest "law" was don't go into debt. Having a wife, and then kids, changed everything in terms of the amount of money needed to get by but hard work, often for someone else, kept all of us living on our 100acres. We had hoped to live 'off grid' but up until about the last 10 yrs that was financially prohibitive. So we're grid connected and now it would be financially problematic to go 'off grid' (though that is still on the back burner). If you're young and don't have a lot of financial resources, work hard and save every penny. You'll be surprised how much a frugal lifestyle saves in a year. Learn to live with yourself, your partner, and kids if you have them. This kind of lifestyle requires lots of compromises to get things done. But if you want live a lot freer than your urban brothers and sisters...go for it and stay focused.

Yes it's true. What you will want at 19 and at 47 will be so different. However at anytime, you can grab a cheap wal-mart tent, sleeping bag and back pack and go out and try different locations in the woods. I'm in Ontario and I'm from Nova Scotia, so I might want to go back and forth to see what I like more outside. Who knows! My life is transforming and I'm fortunate to have enough savings for quite some time, especially if I live outside. I've always LOVED outside. Many don't. I have had so many challenges at my age, I feel like I can do anything now. That bravery took me many years. I have been wanting to do this for at least a decade. My daughter is now 19, so I feel now is the time. She is also coming with me....very willingly. We can't wait. 2 days and we are off. We did get a 10 by 5 storage unit for 2 bikes and about 6 boxes.

Watched several of the Dick Proennke videos. Very interesting. In the early 1980's, my folks and I moved from civilization to the Southern Ozarks. Not quite as remote as Twin Lakes but boonies none the less. We didn't build a cabin but lived without running water for 15 years and without indoor plumbing for 23 years. Always have had electricity and phone(except after ice and/or snow). Dad was in his late 40's and I was in my early 20's. We both ended up going back to work while Mom took care of the homestead. Still heat exclusively with wood and have our own water source. Family is pretty sure we lost our minds moving out of town. But it is satisfying to be self sufficient as much as we are. It takes work and budgeting. Living off the land sounds great until you experience it. Some can do, others have to supplement. Either way, one is self reliant. And as you age, you find other problems crop up. One won't always be young enough to do all the things you want to do. But it is a life worth the hardships.

Shawn, Wise words. Have a plan and grind it out. No quick wins without a crime! Autumn looking spectacular all around you. That's some roof you're putting on that woodpile!!! Regards Stephen.

It sounds like you have worked hard all your life, and as a result you have a safety net of financial resources which seems like it could be important to have. If, for example, something happens and you injure yourself and could not hunt easily for your food, you have the finances to be able to buy groceries at the store and/or relocate temporarily until you are physically recovered. That might be a difficult situation for someone younger who may not have that financial cushion. Also a consideration for those of us in the US is health insurance (and the cost of healthcare) and being able to afford that without a full time job. I think you give great advice on the importance of focus and perseverance to succeed in this lifestyle. Those two things are probably important to succeed in anything, and (from watching many of your videos) it looks like you have an abundance of both, which is probably one reason why you have been so successful in life in general. Thanks for sharing your journey.
