You may be the most liked person on KZbin, if you're not it's because you're number 2 to Cali. We can go to many other channels to watch Canadians tinker around in the woods. We like to watch you tinker in the woods and Cali distract as you try to complete a project. It's always nice to hear your comments even when i disagree. I like how when you have a meal with your wife you set the camera a certain way so she can enjoy her privacy but I like hearing about your family like in today's video. I showed my 6 yr old some stuff you were making with old fashioned tools and he was like, "that guy is amazing". I really like how you finally got a snowmobile but we don't see it in every video because that's not what you are about. Watching this during the pandemic of 2020, you were right to get out when you did. Yes, the stock market got a bit better after you posted this, but it's always a gamble, and you did the right thing for your family. And now look at you, miles ahead of the rest of us. While people are struggling to feed themselves and pay their bills, you've been ahead of this all along. People will always think it's crazy when you start preparing BEFORE things go wrong. But they will always wish they were on the other side of it once things go down. Keep doing your thing. You are inspiring us during all this free time and we are going to start a homestead on our family land. Thanks for showing us it's never too late to start fresh, and you CAN do things you really set your mind to. All the best!

Actually, stock markets has been over valued for long time, and waiting for a large correction. It will happen eventually, but the pandemic kind of speed it up ALOT. Which means that the surge in current stock market prices doesn't make much sense since it is suppose to follow the economies of the entire world or nations (that means we just kick the rock down the road). If you get ahead in the market, always reel your net in when you make some good gains. Being a good investor also means that you are actively managing your fund and retirement income, so you can make money off your investment in self sustainable way like what Shawn does at his cabin.

I think you made a great decision Shawn - most economists I know, myself included, think there's too much irrational behaviour in the stock market to selectively pick them by hand. Long-term index funds across the entire market have shown decent returns over time, and you can generally hedge with gold when there's uncertainty in the market... but unless you have money to play with, you're likely better off investing in your own education, skills, reducing debt, or accruing assets like property 👍
@ulver11876 жыл бұрын
"Irrational behaviour" sure """economist""" everything is perfectly rational if you actually knew what's going on.
@ChrisProuse6 жыл бұрын
ULVER ...after studying econ for 4 years and getting a specialization in it (both a major and a minor in it because I love it that much), I can definitively tell you people still frequently make bad decisions that aren’t in their own best interest, for a whole variety of reasons, even when they’re presented with all the information. For that reason alone, we’re all irrational to some degree, and most classical economic models of yesteryear didn’t account for that irrationality. Most of them assumed that we always acted in our own best interest. More modern fields of research like behavioural economics recognize that we’re often irrational, and understand that while the models might be decent at predicting general trends when there aren’t too many variables involved... we shouldn’t be surprised when someone flips the script and makes a poor decision for everyone involved, like the business partners that Shawn was working with. Hope this helps! :)
@johnnyappleseed10236 жыл бұрын
Chris Prouse as an Econ major myself, I see where you are coming from but uncertainty and irrational behavior is the name of the game. I will always invest in the stock market though I agree you definitely needs some extra money to do so. It returns on average 9% a year which is far better than most investments. Property has has a difficult time recovering from 2008, value in my area has remained the same for 10 years. Gg f you have a diverse and expansive pro-folio you can mitigate the risks of irrational behavior and market crashes.
@ChrisProuse6 жыл бұрын
Johnny Appleseed - Yeah, that’s why I mentioned in my original comment that index funds across the entire market have shown decent returns... but hand picking individual stocks is troublesome for a variety of reasons, and even the “experts” choosing the portfolios for the large name mutual funds out there have poor track records (and high fees). For anyone who wants to learn more about the differences between an index fund and a mutual fund (or the risk of choosing them by hand), I’d highly recommend searching for the Freakonomics podcast called “The stupidest thing you can do with your money”.

"Playing the market" can be a little like "playing" guitar. Learning Smoke on the Water is a long way from being good. Like anything it takes a little talent, a lot of practice. There are lots of places to learn how to do it right. There are rules. It takes discipline to set up Exit Strategies and stick with them. If you think; I'm going to get rich at this your already upside down. Is it gamed? you bet. Every single thing in life can be gamed. The 2008 recession was caused by guys who know what they are doing, when to get in and when to get out and they are the kind of guys who don't really care if others get hurt while they make a ton of money. Not all of them, but a lot of them. In a nicer world 2008 never would have happened.@@ChrisProuse

48 yrs old and retired at 44 yrs old. Here I am 49 yrs old living paycheck to paycheck. I admire what you're doing. I wish I knew the things back when that I know now. You are totally right about splitting your channel like this. I am interested in both of these channels, but you are right I do want to enjoy your other channel for the very reasons you stated. This one will also be something I am interested in so I can learn maybe how I can get myself in a better situation.

I'm willing to bet this is what he was hinting on the real estate, most likely purchased more land, low property tax, get his own internet station so he won't have to go to town, a ground food storage and between KZbin and running a small B&B you can retire very nicely. The trick is to to be handy and like alone time. 😊

Hi Shawn, Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences with the stock market, I look forward to more. I follow you on both channels and think your separation of content is perfect, as another viewer writes you have a good understanding of your viewership. I will continue to watch both and look forward to the adventure and teachings in 2019. You are at where I would like to get too. Cheers MT

First I would like to say that I enjoy both channels and I really like how you do them separately. Very Awesome! Second, you are living and doing the exact lifestyle that I want to pursue and have been planning for many years. Probably since 2008ish. Being a business owner will make you sit back and take a second look at life. Money, tangibles, lifestyle, etc.... All the things I thought would make me happy. Chasing the dream of simplicity, outdoors, primitive ways, etc.... is a much happier life than you can believe. Our paths are a lot alike in many ways. Keep up the excellent work. I really enjoy your channels and all the information. Watch your topknot and God speed to you and your family.

Our first access to your second channel, very very informative and we like both channels. Thank you in advance for adding and sharing your life style with insights to "how you make things happen". Kudos to you and your family for recovering from the financial collapse and continuing to pursue your dreams. We (God Willing) will continue to support you all the way! God Bless Mike & Ronnie

Wow, very excited for you and your family! That is a big move, but sounds like everyone's ready for it, and the time is right! I think you are right about the nature of the stock market, and the impact on the larger economy. I have to tell you, your channels and general philosophy of being more self-reliant, have been really affirming and encouraging to me, during some trials in the last couple years. I bought my 1st house in 2007 (a foreclosure, or else I couldn't have afforded it), then lost my job in 2012, and had to move 1000 miles away for a new job, far from friends and family. But, against conventional wisdom perhaps, I kept the house, rented to friends, always hoping to move back. I made it a priority to pay it off, even though I had to also pay rent in my new town. I think I started watching your videos as I was closing in on this goal. Then, I lost my job again, spring 2018 ... but your can-do message about getting out of crises and building a successful secure life that nobody can take away - that helped get through that grim time. And - I *did* pay off the house (in 10 years actually), *did* get a job back home, *do* live where I want! It also feels like one of the happiest years of my life now. Thanks so much, for sharing your philosophy, and being a part of keeping me motivated and encouraged!

The market is being propped up by stock buy backs. There are many other indicators other than the DOW. Gold has beat the DOW for 20 years. The FED is monetizing the debt. Whenever a country begins to monetize the debt it is an indicator that the system is in it's death throes. Good Luck Bill !

@@johnmichaelkarma , thanks for the free advice. I'll stick with the system that's made me very wealthy, timing of the market is everything. The sky is not falling, "Chicken Little"!

@@bw7471 the sky fell on Shawn just as it did me in 07'-09'. We were crushed because we were ignorant. Since then I have spent countless hours educating myself. One thing I have learned about others is that ya can't educate someone against their will. Because of your normalcy bias you have a hard lesson coming your way.

Dear Mr. James, since I discovered your channels I've been a huge fun of your work. I truly believe that both channels give us worth pieces of information in different ways. Don't worry about what people say or think because what you're doing is helping many others. And it's in your heart the constructive way you've been working, recording and has nothing to the untrustful stock market. Best wishes and whiskeys. LOVE, LIVE, LEARN n LAUGH MAC
