January 1st 2024 I will have been full time reselling for 2 years. There are many things you don’t realize until you go full time and give up a full time job. I left a 6 figure job with a Fortune 50 bank and still wake up each day with a smile on my face.

I would never suggest someone with a six figure job with benefits to become a reseller. I don't know what kind of items you sell, but I'd be miserable after leaving that job if it were to mainly sell $10 or $20 items. Hopefully you're average sale price is at least $100 or more. To each their own.

@@loutewl6903While I respect your comment it also makes me sad as behind it is the reason why this person reached out to CP with the dilemma of wanting to quit his job. See we are taught to stay miserable if the pay & benefits are good...what about happiness. See this is something I know & have lived. Used past career in corporate business & Ebay to get my Psy.d. Still did Ebay FT & practiced FT to constant hate from family & colleagues saying why? you a doctor who makes way over 6figures. Why? Freedom & early retirement is why. Ebay made me a doctor, paid my student loans, buy real estate & invest in other forms of income, allowed me to care for my elderly parents, allowed me to pay for my mom's furneral & burial in cash as my family with jobs/benefits had no money. Anyone that takes the time to read this choose to live, laugh & be happy over security/benefits. Hustle, save up an emergency fund if you can before leaving, find one person to support your dream & move in silence. At 45 y/o, I've been able to leave FT practice and just do Ebay and will retire at 50 because I moved in silence and ignored scared $ to LIVE life❤ You can too

I quit my job at the end of 2022 (I was a RN) and jumped in feet 1st with little reselling experience. Had only sold stuff that belonged to me. I just now after a year am starting to increase my sales to where I can survive without dipping into my savings. I spent this year building up my inventory and LEARNING the business. Still have a lot to learn, but get a huge amount of joy working for myself and having the freedom to be home with my 83 yr old father. I get a natural high every time I hear that cha-ching. Had my best day ever yesterday $576 on about $100 cost of goods. My goal this year is to start selling on other platforms and expand my knowledge of new categories. I also want to increase my average sales by picking better faster selling products. So I would say that if you feel like you need to do something different then just go ahead with it but have a plan and definitely have some $$$ as a buffer.

I’m about to launch. I broke my leg in 2020 and lost my income. I’m collecting disability, but it’s hardly enough. Unfortunately I’m still having ongoing issues and can’t commit to a job because of that. That’s why eBay is a great option for me. My son and I will be working together, and when I can’t get around he can fill in for me. I also plan on taking advantage of USPS picking up deliveries from our home, that is a bonus. I’ve been spending so much time bingeing videos! I’m 64, so I’m taking full advantage of senior discounts! I’ve always loved thrifting and flea markets, and I have a good eye for a bargain. I’ve always been a hard worker, too, and I’m excited to be able to help our household more. Wish me luck, and I hope everyone has a very successful 2024! Happy New Year!

Hey Kevin...thanks so much for your response. I just wanted to add a few extra details that I left out of my original email, that might be of help to others out there. My wife and I are in our early 40s and homeschool our children. Early in our marriage we purposed to get out of debt and stay out. We are pretty simple family and are easily content. We also drive older vehicles, with the exception of a company provided car. We get inventory from a variety of sources....estate sales, thrift stores, flea markets, local connections, pallet liquidation, and just recently have dove into storage auctions. Obviously, yard sales are our favorite and usually best ROI. I feel like with my current job, I missed out on a lot of opportunities during the warmer months and not really having the time due to work. I also try to make the most of my time when I do travel for work and hit thrift stores along my route. I truly enjoy reselling and as you stated have been looking at 2024 being of the beginning of the next chapter. Thanks again for the support and encouragement!

Jumping off from the health insurance topic, I think a good point of discussion for you Kevin may be the health benefits of reselling. There's something to be said about getting up in the morning to do something you actually enjoy, walking the streets of a community/neighborhood sale or the aisles of a thrift store. The social aspect of interacting with complete strangers as well as fellow resellers and friends. Maybe even lifting heavy objects if that's what you like to pick and resell. To me, that sounds a lot better than a 9-5 that forces you to sit in a chair and stare at a computer screen all day every day...

You nailed it. But it’s not always fun. There are frustrating times and you will be spending a good amount of time sitting at a computer when doing paperwork, accounting and especially listing. But the truth is the good far outweighs the bad!

Reselling can also be very stressful, especially in these times. There is a ton of uncertainty and you never know when (or if) you next dollar is coming. I'd never want to be an employee ( ie. slave) again, but reselling can still be very stressful. (And good luck finding affordable health insurance as an individual.)

I still would consider ebay my main source of income, but also deliver for Walmart as well (which is actually accounts for a good chunk of monthly income even though I only do it probably 10 to 15 hours a week). This was a great video, thanks for the info/encouragement.. I've been really discouraged lately, we've been so focused on trying to reorganize our finances, I haven't been out to garage sales and I think it's taken the fun out of it. Plus I've only been doing this for about a year and a half, and sometimes I make really great sales, but its also hard to stay focused on doing this every day especially when i homeschooly 3 kids that all have ADHD and other learning disabilities. I dont want to give up though because i really enjoy it and its the only thing that can work with me staying home with the kiddos to homeschool.. On a side note, the kids have also been wanting to do you tube videos and honestly I've also been thinking about it for the past couple years.. so I don't know. I'm just not sure what editing software to get, especially starting out. Do you have any advice on good inexpensive ones?

I have been a salaried retail store manager for 20 years. I worked 60-70 hours a week, and I was on call 24/7/365. Reselling allowed me to step down to an hourly position last February. Now I work 44 hours a week and have more time to help grow our reselling business. Last year our total sales were $25K. This year we will have over $55K. I plan to phase out my full time job eventually.

Although I personally don't recommend reselling as a FT income. I would recommend being a KZbin vlogger like you Kevin. That's where the real money comes from along with reselling on MULTIPLE platforms. Just look up the income of the most popular KZbin resellers and you can see for yourself. Reselling alone, will not make you enough income to justify quitting a reliable (yet boring) job. My opinion only. Kevin gives great advice here!

The most I ever made as a certified teacher was 42k as well. I picked up an application in September 2007 to go for my master's degree. The economy tanked, everything in education got harder with less results, and I put in a lot more hours. I threw the application in the trash.( I wasn't going into debt in a bad economy.) I left the profession after 11 years of teaching and went back to the corporate world. 40 hour work week and no more. Best choice I ever made.🎉

Just me but if you have the support of your wife, you have a budget and knowledge of your finances, and you are very unhappy then give it a shot. Who cares what anyone outside of your home thinks about it? They don't pay your bills or live your 40 plus hours of being miserable and unfulfilled. Be happy and do the best you can

AMBITION, in my opinion, is the factor that makes reselling work. We should take a hard look at ourselves and decide - Am I willing and able to source, list, test, clean, ship, research, organize, and keep records 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, 300 days a year, for 3 decades? If so, then yes, a full time reselling career is easily done. How do I know? In 2023 my reselling income - After taxes, After fees, After cost of goods and supplies - my take home income is equal to my teacher retirement income. And I only work at reselling about 20 hours a week. Were I to triple the hours of work I am sure I could nearly triple the income.

Hi Kevin, Love your channel & have been reselling for about a year. I’m retired & just do it for a little extra income. My husband & I enjoy going to estate sales, garage sales, etc. I think your best advice is learning to live within your means. Not saying that is possible for everyone, especially if it is a one income household, but there’s definitely more to life than accumulating the latest & greatest “stuff”. For me, Faith, Family & Friends are the most valuable.❤

I am starting a major sale to eliminate stock listed so I can source better in the future. I have been on ebay for 10 years. I am in my 70's and my family does not want to take over when I am gone. We can always change plans in the future. Hàppy New Year Everyone.

I've been buying storage units and picking for over a decade. Supported my family that way for a few years, but I found that I enjoy it more when it's a "hobby" gig. I have a good job, with a Fortune 50 company, where I only work 3½ days a week. That schedule allows me time for family and "treasure hunting". Also, I'm building up a very healthy inventory to become a full-time reseller when I retire in 10 years.

I have been part time reselling for about a year. It’s been a fun pastime, and it’s something that my wife and I enjoy doing together. It’s been profitable, and we are still learning a lot. Thinking about scaling up a bit in the coming year, but it’s a different equation for us. I’m retired military, so I don’t have worries regarding insurance and covering fixed expenses (i.e. mortgage, etc.). Would be more scary to give up a job with benefits to go full time. But the freedom of schedule and quality of life benefits are a definite plus. I guess my recommendation would be to take a really good look at the numbers before taking the leap.

At least he has some time to get things ready. I quit a terrible job that I had for the past 8 years this year. The job that took its place was terrible too. The stress nearly gave me another stroke so I quit and I have just relied on my eBay and savings to get by. It’s not been perfect but I have made it. I keep looking for work though because it’s hard to consistently source but it’s keeping me going. I also found a pick you would be proud of. 21 vintage my little pony all in I’m about $17 they comp out at about $400. My late father worked for the state in the unemployment office for 35 years he did get lucky in the case of when he started which was the same week Woodstock happened NC didn’t tax the retirement of state employees. Well they ended that in 89 but anyone with five years in were vested. All that to say mom gets his retirement and the feds are the only ones that get taxes. That is a different world from myself I had one steady job for 13 years and then the last 20 probably near 20.

You are assuming that Social Security will be there when you are old, which for someone your age is a MAJOR stretch. I would be telling younger people to save/invest assuming there will be no Social Security for them (or what they get will be worth virtually nothing). Save like your life depends on it, because it does.

During the BEST Ebay selling EVER, I had lost my full time job. So, it was kismet that I was doing so well on Ebay. Between hikes in fees and shipping, and having to care for my husband 24/7, my Ebay selling dropped off long time ago. People used to buy stuff I found to resell where they were (usually England or Australia). Because of shipping costs, that ended many years ago. Still fighting to get my stats back up to something that will actually be considered an income.

I personally tell people don’t go full time til you can see profit. That means you’ve done enough scrolling on marketplace or walking around thrift stores for hours at a time weeks in a row looking EVERYTHING up that you have an idea of what to look up when you see it. Plus you have the money to invest once you find stuff.

At least one spouse should keep their job because if the the spouse's health insurance is covered by the employer, the benefits have been doubled. Also income is diversified in case Ebay/Amazon/etc suspends your account.

What worries me is not having a receipt for my purchases. My account tells me if no receipt than you can not claim it. So if I buy a garage sale item for $5 and sell for $10 I made $10 not $5 so I break even. People might get away with it until you get audit from the IRS.

@@18wheeler76 Because you will still be billed. If you don’t pay, or make a payment plan, then you account will go into collections and if you don’t pay then, then you’ll get a judgment. A collection might drop off after some amount of years. However, a judgment doesn’t drop off. You won’t be able to do anything financially, including buying a house and maybe a car with a loan. I resold for 18 years and had to get out as of a year ago - long laundry list of why omitted (progressive MS, three other auto-immune problems, and more along with other non-medical considerations). Congrats to anyone who can do it; be sure you know what you're getting into before making the jump. (especially if you sell on eBay or Etsy. ) It sounds like Lucas is one who should make the jump when the timing lines up. Sourcing here without private purchases ...one more reason I got out. Garage sales are highly seasonal here (and have gone seriously downhill), and the thrifts are abysmal. A friend does house cleanouts and gets 90% of his stock that way.
