1/10, I got on the 'easy' UK Stations quiz. (I got Paddington, simply because of the statuette). I think my performance on this quiz is indicative of how rail travel in the UK has become totally inaccessible to the working British public. Ordinary people just can't afford rail travel anymore. It's a (very shabby) luxury or a hobby, for the minority who can afford it. It's cheaper to FLY to Barcelona from the UK than take a train to Birmingham, in the middle of our country.
@ronniedio194220103 жыл бұрын
This is only easy if you know the answers - the hard quiz is easy if you know the answers! I got Paddington because of the twatting great duffel-coated bear stood in the middle of it - I wouldn't have known it otherwise! Also got a later one because of the castle in the background. Other than that... nitto!

Not bad. 7 out of 10. I thought Newcastle was York, hadn't a clue about Reading and I didn't get Leeds either. But otherwise, not bad. So thanks for the quiz. Well done. And yes, I know I'm being pedantic and anal etc etc, but a pet peeve of mine is we invented railways, so we named these things in UK as RAILWAY stations. Train stations are our American cousins way of saying them, which is fine for them. But I just think too many "Americanisms" have crept into our language. Plus to be REALLY anally retentive, a station is defined as "a place or point of entry". You enter a train by a door. So quite literally a train station ...is a door! A railway station however, IS the point of entry of a railway. So railway station is, to my mind at least, more grammatically correct, where as train station simply isn't. Let the tirade commence. Lol.

The UK does NOT have 'Train Stations' . . . in the UK they are Railway Stations and Tube or Underground Stations. The USA and Canada has Train Stations.
@TrainsTrainsTrains6 жыл бұрын
in British English, up until a couple of years ago it would always have been Railway Station. However, in recent years, Train Station has entered popular usage. Whether this is borrowed from American English, I am not able to say. However, to address your question, both are correct. It is probable that your teacher seeks to preserve the Railway usage as that is what he is used to.

@dancedecker4 жыл бұрын
I FULLY agree. Nice to see I'm not a lone voice But we can fight back. It is an example of sloppy" Americanisms" creeping in yet again. A "station" is defined as "a point of entry". How does anyone enter a railway? At a station. So it's very definition is correct. You enter a train by a door. So taken literally and grammatically, certainly in UK, a "train station" is just a door. End of. So it's a RAILWAY STATION. Thank you.

Not only is it another annoying "Americanism", that's crept into our language, but it's grammatically incorrect as a "station" is defined as "a point of entry". U enter a train via a door. So taken by it's literal definition, a train station is therefore only a door.
