My LLY had that same sound, it was a broken wire to a fuel injector.

It sounds like a spark plug flew out! But since there are no spark plugs I'm guess'n it is an exhaust leak. Hopefully you just have something with the accessory drive belt or components. To me the engine sounded like it ran fine and smooth when you revved it up so I don't think is engine mechanical.

The duramax has an issue with broken flexplates. they crack around the center, wobble and make horrible noise.

I have a 2015 duramax and whenever I accelerate on 3rd gear rpm’s at 2000 plus I hear a little rattling sound. Any idea what it could be??

Egr vacuum pump that's what it was on my d-max just took it out tonight thought it was drive delt tensioner pulley but still made noise after so pulled vacuum pump noise is gone

It’s most likely your belt tensioner because I’m having that same problem and when I took the belt off the rattle went away

I had an injector walk out on my duramax, sounded exactly like that, had to put a helicoil in and replace the bolt that holds it down

idler or tensioner pulley is my rough guess unless they have some heat riser exhaust diverter stuff. I don't recall what they have lol

I think its related to the Serpentine belt system like possibly the belt itself and or an idler or tensioner pulley or maybe even the alternator. I don’t think its engine mechanical noise.

Go through and unplug each individual injector plug. And see what happens.

How did I miss this? I have a friend with a 2010 Duramax (LMM engine) with low power and black smoke coming out. I'm trying to research known causes and this came up. I'm only a year late!
