QUONSET HUT BUILD: Raising the Arches to Build the Roof of Our New DREAM SHOP!

This time on Sally's Speed Shop we start putting up the arches to form the roof of our new dream shop! As always it took way longer than expected, but we finish the entire roof in this episode!

My wife and I put up a 30’x50’ by ourselves in 10 days. End walls and doors over two weeks by myself, 14’x12’ panel door and man door. We’re both healthy and strong, only in our early ‘70’s, but we got’er done.

@alk5749, Did you have any help at all? If not, what method did you use to put up the first few arches with just two people? My wife and I are considering options for putting up a 30'x54'. We're both healthy and mid-to-late 30s. Right now we're at the baseplate phase, looking at the buckets of bolts and dreading what's to come. We haven't even started yet and we can already feel Jacob's statements about bolts!

My 75 year old female boss and I ( 60 yrs) put up a 20 x30 in a week. We put the arches together completely and lifted them 18' up high with the scissor lift.....worked out well.

@@SallysSpeedShop no doubt. I built my house and shop, mostly by myself. After watching you put up the Quonset hut, I decided to watch a few videos of others trying to do the same. Either you have a much better quality structure, or you had a much better plan. It looks great.

Regarding anchor holes, drill down to depth without pulling completely out of holes. If you wallow the hole, the anchor will not set to depth. Addionally, use a one to three pound mallet, not a light hammer, as you take the chance of damaging the nut and threads.

At 15:47 you guys installed the top center piece without the left side completed. At 16:00 you then connected the left side to the top center piece, but you overlapped it with the left side going over the top piece instead of under. Have you seen a leak there? With the bottom over lapping the top, when the water flows from rain, it can get in.

It might look like we overlapped it wrong on video, but everything overlaps the right way and we haven’t had any leaks at all other than from a couple of the bolts themselves. But we just tighten them a little more and the rubber washer seals right up.

Took a second but I found the mfg of the Q but. Spoke to them this week and they were the second lowest price and didn’t have to play any games like with most of the other companies. I’m going to build almost identical in Wyoming this summer so I really appreciate the detail of your vid! Great job. Hope you’re happy with it 2 years later!

Hmm… That’s a very good question. I think the best advice I can give is do a ton of research and figure out how to do as much of it yourself as you can. Quonset huts are about the cheapest price per square foot you can manage, but not having vertical walls is a little annoying at times haha

Looks awesome! I am looking at these for a workshop. Why did you choose the flatter Q model instead of the version with more vertical sidewall (the S model)? I prefer the Quonset look but it the vertical sidewall is more practical. I keep going back and forth.

The main reason is that this model was on sale haha The more vertical walls are much more practical for sure, but I do think this one is more pleasing to look at

amazing work @SallysSpeedshop ! I have watched this so many times... I am doing the same over here in Good Hope GA in the next few months. Have you guys had any issues with the baseplate leaking? if so did you find any solutions? I have heard they leak and the company I bought mine from is advising doing a 2 inch depression in the footing to put the baseplate in instead of flush mounting it like you did I guess this helps with the problem. The concrete work is more expensive that way and wondering your experience? I am doing almost identical Q-style building but mine is 40 x 50.

I can't help but wonder why more people don't use rivets. I know that it's a perfectly acceptable fastening system for steel quonset huts. A couple of guys with rivet guns could make short work of a job like this.

Nice work! Guessing you've had the Q-hut up for a few months now. Any issues with leaking? I'm getting ready to erect my 40' x 56' and plan to use butyl sealant on all over lapping joints.

We didn’t try it, but I’ve heard some people have. I imagine it would be pretty hard to wrangle though because one arch by itself isn’t very sturdy

I have watched a couple of videos about erecting a quonset hut lately. this seems the best version .. or the easiest erection, so far. building half or 1/3 of the arches and using the scissor lift to connect the center. complete arches are just so flexible/floppy that it seems hard to keep the two ends aligned while lifting your dad's temporary arms for the scissor lift and the Y-pole are outstanding ideas

Gut just up the street from my house put up one of these about this size and it lasted 15 years of snow load and moist salty humid air and that last winter a foot of snow folded the center in the entire length of it.. I guess the water got in between the joints and because of how salty and humid it is here it rusted much quicker than they though.. hopefully your environment does bot work against you that much and you get a lifetime out of your sweet ass quonset (how the heck do you spell that) garage..
