I don't know how Quennel plays with so much pace and precision.😮 I wish I met him when he was alive, I would've taken some of this speed from him by getting the tricks behind them. May God Almighty rest his gentle soul. Never come across any of his video and skip. It ain't possible.

There will NEVER be another Quennel Gaskin!!! Short story: In 2002 I met Quennel as we both attended Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY. I was at the stage where I was beginning to understand theory and trying to develop my own style. We were in this trailer-like building where there were private piano rooms to practice. On my way to room I passed the room Quennel was practicing in. Each door had a glass window and if you stood close enough you could hear what was being played. Needless to say he was killing that poor piano. I watched him for at least 20 minutes without interrupting him. Finally I went to my room to practice. I got stuck on a part and was a little frustrated, thinking I would never get it. Lo and behold, Quennel was on the other side of the door watching and listening to me. He opened the door and introduced himself and told me that I sounded good and that I was playing of his favorite songs, “Patiently Waiting” by Hezekiah Walker. He offered to help where I was stuck and I accepted. He encouraged me throughout and made me believe in the effort I put in. He never once spoke about himself. He was selfless and completely genuine in how he gave his time to help me improve. I never forgot that day and his spirit. We would see each other around campus throughout the semester, his last there. The true mark of greatness is willingly and selflessly making others around you better. RIP my brother Quennel.

In the past, when I would apply as a musician at a church...do you know how many Pastors asked me what did I as my main job? When I told them music...they were shocked. They thought music was my side gig because they thought nothing of musicians and thought music was low pay...because that's what they were willing to pay.
@ronb39137 ай бұрын
Willing? More like they wouldn't give a red cent if they could get away with it but unfortunately they can't have church without musicians nowadays. Welcome to the Sunday Club feat holy wine

The level this guy is playing is difficult to be appreciated by most common audiences. If you’re not a musician you might be thinking he just playing really fast, but it’s more than that.

@@da11kingIf you listen to him you'll realize there was a time he said (if one is in a set up congregation readily for worship by my understanding) you don't have to do all that. But when it's among serious musicians like you and I one can explore such dexterity.

So many MALE MUSICIANS bothered by my comments in regards to what's the point of playing on this level if it's not bringing you fame and money? Talents and gifts are given to an individual to be used as a means to financially support that individual. Otherwise, why be given the gift? To have fun with as a side hustle and then have a primary job you hate that pays you nothing?

@sebastianchristopher9461 Жыл бұрын
There is like absolutely NO point playing on that level if you're only playing in church and are not rich and famous like jazz greats Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Erroll Garner etc. You're only playing on that level to impress yourself and the people around you. You may do some clubs, weddings, concerts, may go on tour with a major artist etc. but YOU'RE not to a major label as an artist and you are not packing out auditoriums full of people. So what's the point?
@Michael-iw2me Жыл бұрын
Because he enjoys to do it to make people happy, people have choices just like you had the choice to type this
@chibuezengozi Жыл бұрын
The Jazz greats were not that rich, many of them died extremely poor, especially those signed to major labels. As a musician, you must first love and enjoy what you are doing, then impact is the next thing that you want to be concerned about. Money and fame are secondary, they are important but never the destination. Musicians who become rich are those who pay attention to the business side of things in addition to their talent and craft
