An ancient classic revived in the modern age to be more dangerous than ever.
"Motorcycle chariot racing is a motor sport that combines motorcycle racing and chariot racing.
The sport was extant in the 1920s and 1930s, having been inspired by the 1925 film Ben-Hur. It went largely (although not entirely) extinct after that, although exhibition rigs are still made and driven.
The sport was developed in Australia in the 1920s and quickly spread to Europe and America. Motorcycle chariot races were, for instance, probably held at the old Charlotte, North Carolina motor speedway (the old speedway at 35°5′52.8″N 80°52′52.51″W, not the modern Charlotte Motor Speedway).
A typical early vehicle configuration was a rider on a motorcycle, pulling a chariot and charioteer who were essentially ornamental. A 1922 short piece in Popular Mechanics describes this configuration. This soon developed into a configuration with two riderless motorcycles steered by a single charioteer using reins. Steering was sometimes done with reins attached to the throttles (the charioteer steered by controlling the relative speed of the two motorcycles), and sometimes with rigid extensions attached to the handlebars. Modern rigs may have foot pedals for speed control, the reins used for steering the front wheels."

Before being made into a film, Ben Hur was a wildly popular stage play in the USA. Some productions even figured out how to have the chariot race in an indoor theater… with live horses. They built a giant treadmill and let these animals go for it full tilt

Also interesting note: The author of the book Ben Hur was a civil war General, Lew Wallace. He earned infamy for failing to get his men into combat on time at the Battle of Shiloh, but later achieved some fame for a valiant defensive stand in Maryland against a Confederate army three times the size of his own.

That's what I was saying!! Qxir has it all wrong, the majority of people would GLADLY choose watching chariot's race, over a regular ass game of basketball... Plus, if chariot racing was around today, it'd be one of the most deadly sports ever created, can you just imagine how frequent those chariot's probably crashed? (I wonder if back then chariot's were sent hurdling through the air). I bet they'd crash even more then Nascar does! Which in my opinion, would be incredibly entertaining to watch...

The best thing about the Colosseums was on very rare occasions was they'd literally flood the arena to make a simulated naval battle, or naumachia for the spectators. Naumachiae are thought to date back to the third century BC, and appear to have taken place only four or five times in history. The first naumachia on record, in 46 BC, was in honor Julius Caesar’s quadruple triumph, which ended wars in Gaul, Egypt, against Pharnaces of Pontus, and against King Juba of Numidia. For Caesar’s naumachia, ships representing the Tyrian and Egyptian fleets were set afloat in a basin constructed near the river Tiber. The boats were staffed with 4,000 oarsmen and 2,000 fighting men. Augustus threw a naumachia in 2 BCE involving a basin broad enough to hold 30 ships representing Persian and Athenian fleets. A bit later, in 52 AD, Claudius demanded his own naumachia, this one on a lake and involving 19,000 soldiers and 100 ships meant to represent rivals Rhodes and Cecily. According to Tacitus, the prisoners at this showcase refused to fight, forcing Claudius to send down his imperial guard to instigate some blood shedding. Must have been a fun afternoon for all (well, except the poor bastards that died during these simulated battles).

Gladiator matches were not as bloody as usually depicted in pop culture, and most didn't end in fatalities. No way! The guys doing this sport AND steering it with differential thrust with the motorcycles. were excessively hardcore. That's either suicidally limited control or an insanely skilled pilot, or both.

Chariot racing is SO dangerous that during the filming of Ben-Hur, one of the extras had his head squished by a wheel. It was actually kept in the film and is the single instance of someone actually dying in a major motion picture that you can actually watch as it happens. The 50’s were kind of amazing.

I remember as a kid in the 70s watching motorcyclists whiz round and round in inclined racetracks until they were riding perpendicular to the ground. It was a staple at county fairs and the better carnivals. I never got to see a Cage of Doom, though, a giant globe of carefully bent girders. I was a rider when I grew up, and when I survived a particular peril due to pavement, weather, or my own cocky stupidity those riders were alwats on my mind inspiring a mad, idiotic grin.

Clearly you've never seen chuckwagon racing, it's very similar. It's got the horses, speed and giant race track. No attacking other people with whips, though. It's been run in Calgary since 1923. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuckwagon_racing It's exciting and dramatic (unless a horse or human gets injured, and then it's horrifying) and 100% worth the price of admission.

Btw the fact that Gaius Appuleius Dioclese was the richest athlete ever is one of those facts that often spring up in clickbait top 10 lists, but is not actually true. If I remember correctly that 40 billion figure was calculated by some journalist with not history or economy degree who basically said "a horse was worth X much back then and a car is worth y much now" and then he did the math and got some massive unrealistic figure.

Well still in Punjab, the chariot racing exist but with a slite twist. Instead of horses racers use a pair of young ox and the races are time based. Make sure to check it out. P. S. my maternal family is participating in these races since 1950's and they are quite well off from this ordeal.

5:11 times like this remind me imperatively , that safety is relative. People say "oh look at what we did before that's considered unsafe now." And they can either mean things we do today will be labelled unsafe tomorrow, or that the world has copped on and gained common sense. But reality is, what we've done with safety, is made it an idea instead of a practice. I don't know about you, but as a human designed to hunt, that isn't made of glass, and we'll used to bumps and bruises, I'd personally consider motorbike chariot racing significantly safer than eating vegetable oil or smoking. I do both those things, but they're ok because they're the acceptable unsafe. It's all relative. It means nothing. A dangerous physical activity is nowhere near as damaging as the most legal substances were encouraged to use,. I mean if safety was a real discussion then the one I'm having Right now with myself wouldn't even be happening. Thanks for listening to my teď talk I'm gonna go home and cry now

Cruelty to animals that had no say in what they were forced to do. Glad this "sport" isn't popular anymore. Horse racing alone is dangerous for the horse. This is why it should be totally banned or else made simplified to the point that the horses aren't put in danger. Horse racing associations don't care about the horses welfare, all they care about is the money. I don't frequent any so called sport that involves animals.
